Root LG Vortex has same Processor as Ally

According to Verizon, the Vortex has the same MSM7627 processor as our very on Ally, and it ships with 2.2 on it. I dont know about you guys, but this kinda sounds like the jackpot to me.

I could have sworn I read that the Vortex had a OMAP processor, but if the specs Verizon has are true then hopefully our devs will be able to cook up a 2.2 rom

Comparing the detailed specs on another website, they look like identical phones so I do wonder if one of the ROM developers could steal the Vortex ROM and figure out a way to port it to the Ally. It might solve the problem they were having before trying to get a bootable Froyo ROM.

The Ally still appears to be the superior phone.

First off, the Vortex display is HVGA, not WVGA like the Ally. Aside from weight, they appear to have very similar dimensions, even thickness, despite the fact that the Vortex does not have a physical keyboard (figure that one out). Also, I'd rather shoot myself in the face than have to depend on a virtual keyboard on a 3.2 inch display.

While not gorgeous like the Incredible, the Ally is a decent looking phone and definitely more pleasing to look at than the Vortex, IMO. The Vortex looks like you might find it in plastic clamshell packaging at your local Walmart.

On a different note, by glancing at the picture it appears that LG has developed some sort of UI this time around. However, this may or may not be a welcome addition to our theme options.

As for froyo, I guess we'll see what happens...

Well I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to talking about the technical portions of programing since im in college learning it now. However, if I remember correctly, one of the stopping points earlier was finding a phone with the same chipset. If we can get a recovery that will work on this phone (My point being here), then we should atleast have a starting point. Maybe possible edit some code for the different screen types and what not. From what I can see though, its essentially the same idea for the phone, minus the keyboard, and it has that odd new UI. For most of us, we use launcher pro or adw etc anyway for performance gains. If we can get past the few hardware limitations we'll be set IMO.

I'm interested to see initial reviews on this phone to see whether or not froyo puts this phone miles ahead of the stock Ally.

Edit: Interestingly enough, the new LG Optimus got pretty good reviews from engadget. Citing that they got higher quadrant scores than the Droid 1 and feel very snappy. The Optimus features the same processor as the Ally, and obviously its version of 2.2 does not include flash.

I had to stop at the Verizon store today to check on an issue I had with my phone. They had the Vortex on display so I played around with it. One thing I noticed right off the bat was that the display was much better on the Ally. It has a higher resolution and slightly bigger screen so reading text on web pages was much easier on the Ally.

As for performance, I was quite surprised at just how smooth the Vortex seemed to be and I noticed it right away simply by swiping the unlock button. Scrolling through the screens and scrolling the app list confirmed this as well. Very responsive. But that's where it pretty much ended. Everything else seemed to run just about the same speed as the Ally. Loading web pages, scrolling up and down a web page, etc. all ran about the same speed as the Ally which makes sense considering they are the same specs. The Vortex did come with a little more app space, 150mb compared to 128mb on the Ally. It was a nice little phone, but the inferior screen\display would keep me from ever buying this phone.

I also played around with the new Samsung Continuum, which was a really nice smaller phone, but I hated to ticker display at the bottom. I imagine it would be a battery killer and I couldn't see any way to disable it. Other than that though, it was about the same size as the Ally (same width, slightly taller), the screen was beautiful and the performance was fantastic. But the phone that really blew me away was the Fascinate. Too big for my tastes, but what a classy looking device that one is. Nice design, great performance, big screen, etc. If I was in to bigger phones, i'd pick that one over the Incedible or X.

One thing I can tell you Using such a small screen without the keyboard STUNK!!!
That virtual key board was AWFUL!!!.
I wouldnt trade my Ally for it. That much is for sure. And yes Confirmed are your suspicions the Vortex does have 2.2 but does not have Flash.

Is the Vortex able to do the talk-to-text texting thing, where you can talk and it will type out the text for you? I don't know if that's a specific phone thing or if that comes with Froyo.
