Skype over 3G working in the US. I think.

Hey guys.
Looks like the new Skype app won't work over 3G in the US, probably because the carriers would whine about it.
I have put together a modified version of the skype apk from the market that works over 3G anywhere. Be sure to uninstall the Market app first!

It works! I just tried it over 3G and it works perfect. I made a call from 3G over VoIP through Skype. I guess the only question is how do I know it's going over 3G and not through the phone.

From what I recall, if on Verizon, calls using SKYPE to numbers in the US uses verizon minutes. Calls made internationally uses SKYPE.

I can't believe more people haven't responded to this. Everyone was complaining about no calls over 3G and no video chat. This solves at least one of the two issues.

I reckon if wifi on your phone is turned off....then it must be going out over 3G!

I don't think Skype Lite is the same thing. I believe it makes a regular cell phone call to Skype's servers. Read some of the reviews here...

This is actually a misunderstanding. I have the ally (skype was advertised for use with this phone) and when making a skype call it uses the voice network but doesn't deduct minutes against my monthly. So it's like calling a phone, but I don't get charged any minutes on my verizon bill.

It appears that pieter3d disabled the Verizon hack, allowing his modified version to use Skype directly instead of using mobile calls (and minutes) to Skype's inbound server.

I just want Skype that works on WiFi. I don't care about it working on 3G. It came pre installed on my Droid X but it doesn't work on WiFi, pretty worthless if it doesn't.

Anyone know how to get Skype that works on WiFi?

I just got the Droid Incredible 3 days ago and Skype does not work with WiFi. I'm with Verizon. Verizon won't allow your Skype to work with WiFi. I am beyond pissed off about this. I travel to Italy often. Before I made the switch from the iPhone and AT&T to Verizon I expressed my need for Skype above everything else and I was told I could use it...yes, that's true, but please disclose EVERYTHING and tell potential new customers that it can't be used with WiFi. I never even dreamed that Skype couldn't be used with WiFi.

Verizon you suck for this. You should tell people and be specific about it. Don't just say it has Skype capability...especially people who are coming from using an iPhone. I have filed a complaint with Verizon.

With vonage for Facebook you can call all of your Facebook friends on wifi for free, as long as they have a smart phone or iPhone also. I know its not the same, but it is something.
