So long fellow "Captivaters"

I bought my baby October 30th 2010, I was so impress by the screen and picture quality and did i mention screen? then tried using it to call people and get calls and text.

First of all i Couldnt Hear (excuse my ghetto language) SQUAT Up in this mother friggin place because the speaker is super quiet even at its full volume.

texting friends, Well of course I selected a text to reply to it. for some reason it never was correct, I clicked on "bob's" and I conversation on my messages, and another persons convo popped up instead.! wth?:thinking:

I wanna try out my gps and of course it never worked. I lbs test mode this and that changed settings and so forth, never got a single fix to work.

Oh and if i wanna use wifi on my phone i cant hold it in landscape mode because of the wifi death grip this thing has.. I doubt its AT&T's network since my brothers iPhone and Moms Blackberry have full 3G coverage in our house, all bars are present. but not my phone I only have 1 bar....

I will be making a switch. Im sprinting my self to sprint and getting an Evo.. thank you for your help. I highly suggest you guys do not hope to "Captivate" a fix via OTA, Firmware, Patches etc.. anytime soon because its never gonna happen. so long and good bye

don't blame you. between the lag, gps, lack of froyo and updates to glitches, this phone is pretty, but the complete opposite of something that "just works"

Hey you gave it a shot and I wish you luck (I'm glad you're not going for the iPhone 4). I wish more people would return their phones for these reasons (within their 30 days of course). It would send a strong message to at&t and samsung if enough were returned.

Trust me i know , i wanted to give it a shot specially since I still have the unlimited data plan for 30 bucks .. I wanted the iPhone 4 but after my first taste at android i love it. and AT&T has no options with android other then their for teen-aged girls phones like the backflip and flipside and flip this and flip that.

I did the same thing, had many of the same problems, and ended up with an IP4 - not fancy, can't customize it like I did the Captivate, but EVERYTHING works, right out of the box.

When I can get an upgrade I will certainly visit Android again, but no way I ever buy another Samsung phone, never ever, ever, never, never.

Sorry to see you leave, but I wouldn't be too quick to give up on the Android future with AT&T...

Unless I am mistaken, you don't hear that kind of problem from Roger's Captivate users. It looks like a software problem to me.

I am a Roger's subscriber, and my Captivate works perfectly, GPS included. We waited a long time to get the Captivate, but I believe Rogers waited for Samsung to fix a few things before selling us the phone.

All I am saying is don't lose hope, I believe most, if not all your problems will go away with the next big software update.

I'm an AT&T subscriber. My phone's been perfect since day 1. No probs with GPS or self-shutdowns.

I think the GPS has issues, though, when running on battery only. I tested that issue yesterday. Drove to work with GPS, using battery only, and in the 20 minutes that I drove to work, the phone never locked to GPS, kept searching.

Then last night I used it to drive back from an event that was about 40 minutes away. Put the charger on and got an almost-instant GPS lock.

I'm going to do a few more tests to see if my theory pans out.

Sounds like your phone has the same issues as the one I owned when it comes to GPS. Don't think having a car charger hooked on it changes anything, definitely a problem with the Galaxy S line. The GPS sticky at the top of the forum is not there for nothing, almost 800 posts complaining about GPS and 30K+ views.

As for the original poster, best decision you could have ever made. I did the same but couldn't get my money back so went with an iPhone4 and love it. Future of Android is definitely bright but Samsung is not the one to deliver it.

I have none of the problems that you do. Flashing Cognition 2.3b3 to my phone has fixed every single issue I had with my Captivate. My GPS is much better, battery life improved, and I don't experience any lag while using the phone at all. Texting, Gmail, all much better and tightly integrated than my iPhone ever was. I hope you enjoy your new phone and new carrier.

I wonder if the CLA had the effect of being a passive antenna? I've heard that if you hold a phone against your forehead or chin while searching for a GPS signal, it locks quicker. Haven't tried that. I do know when I hold my garage door opener to my chin, it seems to do a better job getting the door to open that when I try to use it normally. Any thoughts?

Weird & Funny. :p But I don't really have anything to add...

This phone would be BEAST if it worked..... like it should. Sadly it didnt, thats why I was willing to give up my super amoled screen, my 5mp camera that is near perfect, and the 16 gig built in memory for the evo which screen isnt as good as the Cap's and a cheap-0 8 gig micro sd card that comes with the phone. But i rather have a working phone something you dont stress about.. then having a nice screen and a nice camera

i dont blame you bro..i was on the same boat..i love the android platform but the captivate was just a horrible phone..many problems like mentioned above.. I got the new win7 focus and what a diff..i have no lag, gps works perfectly, call quality is loud and speaker is loud. of course im missing alot of stuff since its a new OS but il stick with the focus until ATT comes out with a new flagship android device.

Part 2 of Testing my theory (needing more juice for GPS to run properly)...

This morning I drove to work and started GPS (on battery only) to navigate to work.

From my driveway to the end of my street, was about 100 yds. Phone continued to search for GPS.

Put it on the charger, instant lock to GPS. Accurate, showed me passing a side street as I was passing it.

So I think using GPS on battery only will result in accuracy and lock issues.

Once on charger, GPS works perfectly.

So does this mean it's a hardware issue? Or a battery issue? Or software issue? Can anyone offer some insight?
