Help How do I scroll without using the slideout keyboard?

Sorry if this has been answered, but I cant find a way to scroll up and down without pulling out the slide out keyboard.

Is there a way I can scroll in portrait mode (e.g. in apps like Gtalk, sms etc.) without pulling out the keyboard and using the arrow keys.

I miss this feature sorely from my HTC Incredible which had a dedicated scroll pad or My Sprint Hero which also had a trackball.

Is there any alternative?

Am I understanding your question right?? You just want to scroll up and down the screen??? Or do you mean scroll within text?? Like the same function that the up/down arrows on a keyboard do??

Your question is worded so it seems like you simply want to scroll up and down the screen and, of course, you have a touch screen so scrolling is done by touch. If you mean you need up/down arrows to navigate within a text field, you can do this by dragging your finger from the Swype key to the SYM key (bottom left corner of your onscreen keyboard). This action brings up a edit keyboard that has navigational arrows. To go back to the QWERTY keyboard, tap the ABC.

Of course I can scroll up and down the touchscreen by touching it. I meant scroll within text and also to scroll up and down in say e.g. my Gtalk contacts list. Thats not possible by the touchscreen thing and needs a dedicated scroll pad (if you understand what I mean). I also couldnt see the navigational arrows that you mentioned in the default swype keyboard. If you could elaborate...

OK, found it... Thanks for that... but that still leaves my problem with scrolling the Gtalk contacts intact, as it needs a text box open to scroll. I need to scroll without any text box open also, like I said before e.g. to scroll up and down my Gtalk contacts to check their full status updates etc. Any solution to that also?

duh... Kindly read question before contributing... dont insult my intelligence...

You have to have it before it can be insulted.

You asked a question about how to use trackpad/trackball scrolling on a phone that doesn't have a trackpad or trackball. It's really doesn't get much easier than that. It's not a shortcoming of the phone, as it was never advertised or offered with a trackpad/trackball. If you feel that it's an important feature, why did you purchase a phone that doesn't have one?

There seems to be a lot of this going around in a lot of the subforums. These aren't iPhones that are only offered in one configuration, if a certain phone doesn't have all the hardware/software you need, then look at others. It's like buying a convertible car and then saying its only shortcoming is that it doesn't have a hard top.

If you dont have a proper answer, I think you shouldnt have intervened. And I think the same with you (intelligence i.e. if u didnt get it...lol) is at a all time low. I didnt ask for trackball scrolling. I just asked for a solution to scrolling issue viz a viz a trackball, something software based like the swype keyboard...

If you dont have a appropriate answer, dont troll... stay away from the discussion...

Many hardwares dont have appropriate facilities... that is not to say that the the hardware is lacking... I was looking for a solution for a problem which I presumed should have been sorted out by Samsung...

and I have been using android much before you were wiping in your pants... so stay away unless you can contribute positively...

and I am an indepth reviewer... if you would like to see my reviews, come here - Sprint Samsung Epic 4G - The Beast Is Here! - Reliance Mobile (CDMA & GSM) - Discussion Forums

In all fairness, your original question was confusing, I think that is why you didn't have immediate responses. However, it is important that members read other replies within the thread before offering solutions. Many times the question has already been answered OR, as in your case, the question is clarified.

Gtalk does support touch scrolling, but only thing is that if I need to check a particular person's (long) status update, I need to highlight that person and that is only possible by a scroll pad... anyways, a small glitch... no phone is perfect...

I hope you still have this phone 'cause I'm pretty sure I know the solution :) With the touch screen just press and hold the person's status and a menu will come up. Select "Friend info" TADA! :D That also enables you to see their full email and set a nickname as well
