Rogers Dream 1.6 Update

Despite GBD and myself spelling out the facts for them, they continue to say that HTC is skipping 1.6 and not making it for Dream and Magic, and that it's the users responsibility to get updates them selves (by rooting, I suppose!).

I believe many people just don't understand difference between official ROM and custom ROM.

Official ROM created and supported by carrier or device maker. That mean in case of any problem you have an address you can call and ask for assistance or repair. This ROM is tested to particular hardware and in most cases works pretty good without complications.
WE WANT THIS ONE.

Custom ROM created by group of enthusiasts (or even by single person) from open source Android code. This ROM has no warranty, not properly tested, not optimized to particular hardware. Nobody promises to you any update or bug fix. If something doesn't work (WiFi, Bluetooth etc.) nobody can tell you how long you should wait for fix.
You should root your phone and it breaks your warranty.
Update process is not simple as official update. You must have good knowledge about this process. You probably should change SPL (for these who have "Perfect SPL" from latest HTC update) that quite dangerous. If something goes wrong during this process you just brick your device.
You have to remember: bricking your phone doesn't release you from 3-years contract!

So why should I take risk when I signed contract and expect from my providers to support my device?

Wow! BIG UPDATE (I HOPE)!

I just now (5:20pm) received a phone call from Mr. Brian Szeto from the office of the president of Rogers in response to my email sent to the email address of Mr. Nadir Mohamed on Dec 12. (You can see it here: http://androidforums.com/rogers/10647-rogers-dream-1-6-update-7.html#post177970).

He called to tell me that they were beginning an investigation into the whole issue, and that he would call me back hopefully by Thursday. He also gave me his phone number, in case I wanted to call him. he asked that I NOT publish that phone number online, and that apparently he has asked the same thing of one of the other members of this forum who emailed Mr. Mohamed's email address (I know a few of us did). I agreed not to publish the phone number, but said I would be telling you all of the conversation.

Before letting him go, I talked to him for about 5 minutes or so. I said i wanted to make it very clear to him what the problem was. I explained that we want the 1.6 update, that we KNOW it works on the HTC Magic and Dream. We would like 2.0, but we are aware that 2.0 might be somewhat problematic for these phones, but at least we NEED to have 1.6.

I said that while I had not spoken directly with Simon, it was reported i the forum that Simon had seemed confused about exactly how the updates work (and that this confusion seemed to be spread throughout Rogers). I explained very clearly that these phones are not like the old dumb phones, that they are really little computers that need to be updated like a Windows computer to be able to run the latest software. I pointed out that there are NOW apps in the Market Place that can not be used on our phones because we are stuck on 1.5.

I also made it clear that, despite what Simon _might_ have said, that we _don't_ want this update so we can "hack" our phones. I explained that we can hack our phones right now, if we wanted to, and that we want this update so that we DON'T have to hack them, so we can stay within our warranty.

I pointed out not only that they have 2.0 on phones now in the US, but that we were aware that _Telus_ would be carrying the Motorola Milestone with 2.0 in the new year, and that we had spoken to Wind mobile and that we knew that they would at some point be carrying Android phones.

He was very polite and professional, and promised to call me back.

If they were ignoring us, they wouldn't have bothered to call me. I think we are actually being heard there. I believe they are most likely watching this forum thread, as well as the new blog, the FB group, the petition, the Twitter tweets, and they know we are reaching out to the media.

It is very important now that we be very careful not to say anything that is untrue, that we show a little patience now, but maintain our willingness to be a thorn in their side if they continue to string us along or refuse to support our phones. I'm sure it doesn't hurt that he competition from Telus, Bell, and Wind is/are coming!

That was freakin' awesome! Just made my day dude! :D

That sounds promising mjschmidt. keep us posted on your progress as I am sure you will.

Nothing yet on my side from Therese, I have tried calling the direct line that she gave me via email, but her VM says Monday December 14th so I suspect she hasn't come in today for some reason or another. I will keep trying to get another point of view.

Don't have high hope yet until we hear something from them

I just read on Androidandme that T-mobile is starting to allow direct billing for the Android Market but this only works for 1.6 and up. This would resolve the no Google checkout issue in Canada and allow us to get paid apps and be billed by Rogers. Does this give Rogers incentive to update? Does anyone know if they would get a take when someone buys a paid app?

@Akkuzo: I could have sworn that I read somewhere very recently that Canada would finally get access to paid apps once the Milestone makes it to Telus.

The paid apps thing is a Google issue, not a Rogers one, and there is no reason we can't access paid apps in 1.5, so even if we don't get 1.6, it may just be a matter of Google turning on the taps once the Milestone is released by Telus. I will see if I can find the article.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the issue is that there's no Google Checkout(web or android based) in canada. That's an issue that doesn't seem like it's going to be resolved anytime in the near future. If the Milestone is getting paid apps it would have to be through direct billing which can only be done on 1.6+.

You can go right now and set up a CANADIAN Google checkout account, I have one.

At least they bother replying to you, me nothing. Hopefully you will get some useful information out of them. Keep up the good work.

As I understand it you don't have to have direct billing to be able to buy apps, it's just a matter of Google "turning it on" for each country. Possibly they have been negotiating with governments and carriers.

Yes, sorry, you can use google checkout in Canada as a consumer, but not as a merchant. It was my understanding that this is why Google doesn't sell apps in Canada. Perhaps I'm incorrect but either way, this is getting off topic, the original question was if direct billing on apps would give Rogers an incentive to upgrade.

Only if we call to let them know about it. ;-)

I just signed up as an excited and BRAND NEW (yesterday) owner of an HTC Dream which, please correct me if I am wrong, is now at least 3 years old in the U.S.
I have spent approximately 4 hours reading every single post in considerable detail. For those of you involved from the start, I salute you!!! Great work! As I read I found myself getting more and more frustrated after being sold this "soon to be if not already" obsolete unit. It's Open Source and Linux based aura helped me to choose it over the ego inflated iPhone and I started questioning my decision as soon as I brought it home and hit the 'net. I love to "Frankenstein" any technology that I come in contact with, but my phone is my work and therefore my sustenance, so I am hesitant to root it, just yet.
I've seen this forum lose some steam over the past few days and I hope that it is simply the holidays as the pressure needs to stay strong regardless of the promising letter. I have bookmarked this forum and will continue to watch it!
I've signed a couple of the petitions and am planning to write a letter should the latest response turn out to be BS as many of the former have.

For Rogers information: I have wanted an iPhone since well before they were available in Canada. After reading about the Android phones, I thought that the "Open-ness" of it might make it a better choice. Please don't prove me wrong!

Good luck to us all!

Petition Signed
Rogers Forum posted to When will Rogers update Android phones to ver 1.6
News story on my home page
Twitter update about the story

Consumers need to stand up for fair market practices. Rogers has the opportunity to demonstrate good corporate governance by doing the right thing. Time is running out.

How about a link to the story on your home page.

I've started trying different Google combinations for Rogers, 1.6, HTC, Dream, etc.... Every hit that I get that is a forum or any other place that I can post I'm leaving a message about our quest, and supplying a link back to here, Facebook, Blog and Petition.

I only have so much time to do this though, so it would be a great help if some other members could be doing the same. The more that we get our message out there, the better.

So how about it guys, lets all step up to the plate to make sure that every body in Canada who goggles about the Android phones knows what's going on.
