Help I have a question about this whole Galaxy S Froyo thing

I understand that people are upset because Samsung said they will be putting out a 2.2 update for the Galaxy S devices for a little while now and still have yet to fulfill their obligation. I get that. What I don't get is why all the constant whining about it? Can you not use your phones with 2.1? Is it beneath you or something to use it knowing that there is something newer out there that you don't have yet? I don't get why some people are so dramatic as to say that they actually want to return their devices because they haven't gotten 2.2 yet. They act like the phone sucks with 2.1, when it doesn't.

I am a new member and new to Android phones in general, but I already love my Epic even with 2.1 on it. I get no lag at all. The processor is fast as hell. The graphics and display are second to none. It already beats out the EVO head to head in quite a few areas and isn't even on the same platform yet. (Before you comment, yes I did have an EVO for a few days so I can compare them.)

The update is coming. Have a little patience and try and enjoy your device for what it can do, rather than spending all your time worrying about when the next OS will drop.

There are many reasons are waiting for Froyo.

We all know that the speed is not a problem, the epic is fast. If you read through the forums you'd know that not much people complain about that.

Froyo brings flash. Everyone wants flash. Flash is an important part of all phones. Froyo also brings a lot of other goodies, its simply better. For some people its a must so they return their phones. But again, most of the returns of the Epic are faulty manufacturing defects, liike the wobbly screen, scratched keyboard, etc.

I've seen Froyo on the Evo4G, my brother has that. Its pretty nice, but thats not how Froyo is going to be on the Epic. I'm also pretty sure with the 2.2 update we get Touchwiz 3.0, which is quite a nifty feature. GPS is another thing, though I do not know if that is fixed in 2.2 or not.

I don't recall anyone saying that the Epic sucks on 2.1 either, same thing about the display.

Galaxy S should have had Froyo a long time ago. Don't know what the holdup is, but it is an important update. Its not the "next OS", its just an update. Get your facts together before you try to "/rant".

Sorry, just seems like a lot of the posts lately revolve around people complaining about not getting the update yet and I wanted to know what the big deal was. But I guess Apps to SD and Flash 10.1 is serious business apparently.

Honestly, I don't think apps to SD is a big thing at all. Its a good thing though. But I mean, I've never gotten the warning saying I need more space, then again I don't have too many apps. I uninstall all the uneeded ones.

Flash I think though is a pretty big thing.

I love my Epic on 2.1 to, but I am looking forward to 2.2.

I totally agree with you Jay.
Before I had my SGS I had a Cliq which was on 1.5 for forever until a week ago. But before the official 2.1 came out I rooted it months ago and had 2.1 on my Cliq but after which I thought to myself "now what?"
I guess the mentality of mine is that "I paid for this device so the company should give me what I payed for" also I think it's peoples fear of being outdated in this day and age.

Although, It would be pretty neat to have flash on my Vibrant. I've been thinking lately, I only use my computer for gaming and watching my Asian drama's and Anime. If I had flash... God I would only be on my computer when gaming. I would be in the comfort of my bed or out and about watching what I want, when and where I want.

Download the browser Skyfire. I have yet to run into a flash site it doesn't work on.

I don't really care either way, but it is frustrating when Google releases updated apps/webapps for Android 2.2 devices ....such as the new Youtube player, new GMail, Google Instant for the mobile browser, new Google voice search, C2D notifications, Google Doc editing, just to name a few.

GPS fix has been overruled. None of the recent Froyo release even attempts to fix the GPS. Samsung appears to have given up on it.

Flash is probably slightly over exaggerated, but it is nice to be able to watch facebook vidos.

Performance increase? Well, may be. It does have better RAM management, but Samsung's insistence of using RFS makes that unimportant.

I'm looking forward to all the features with 2.2, but my main gripe with the delay is that I'm afraid it will be a be a trend for Samsung. If they're THIS late on the Froyo delay, will they be late on the 2.3 update? How late? Like I said before, I didn't think 2.2 was a gamebreaking update, but if Samsung is really late on a MAJOR update, we'll be seeing a lot more whining.

I'll also add that some techies don't like knowing that they're behind in technology, especially in this day and age when everything is instant and technology is always being advanced. With rumors that 2.3 will come out fairly soon for some device, knowing they're TWO updates behind might be a little bothersome.

here is what i have been told, the carriers can get the software built from the handset maker, if the carrier wants it made, and of course pay for it. If no carriers ask they will probably not bother to upgrade, why should they, the carriers are after all, their customers. Not necessarily good business accumen imho but they know better how to run their company I guess. Our regional carrier, cellularsouth just started selling the galaxy s fascinate as the galaxy showcase, and supposedly the gps is fine. They say they worked with them and fixed that and lag issues..., well, we will see. I have been tracking the issue as im getting one in a week when i can upgrade.

I haven't been following, but that's disappointing. There's always hoping that Samsung will rectify their ways, especially since the Samsung Galaxy S series is getting so huge. If Samsung can't get their flagship line of phones on track with the rest of the flagship Android devices, then I'm not sure how long they can keep up. The Froyo update is definitely keeping them back in that regard.

Running froyo with a custom rom on the galaxy S and its runs fairly smoothly, i've not bothered using any lagfixes as it doesn't really need it and lagfixes use up a lot of phome memory anyway.

Not really tested the GPS since using Froyo so can't really comment, though you can try GPS boost from the market.

APPS2SD is nice but the phone has plenty of memory anyway, I have around 150 apps with 67% internal memory free so its not really an issue.

Flash sites i've tested have worked well.

Providing Samsung doesn't cock the update up, 2.2 should be a worthwhile update.

I'm hoping for better battery life. I unplug from the charger at 6:00 am when i leave for work. No GPS, No Email, No Phone calls, 10 - 20 text messages at most. By 9:00 PM I have maybe 15% charge left. My HTC Touch Pro 2 Windows phone with the stock upgraded ROM would last two days, I could talk for a few hours...surf the web, do email hourly. If Sprint offered a Windows 7 Phone, I would be all over it.

I have had several Samsung products from TVs to Blueray disc players. They have always been completely unsympathetic to the time element, falling MANY months behind promised updates on everything I have ever had. They typically only ever responded when things really grew out of control online. Unfortunately, Samsung couldnt care less about our wishes to get an update. They may (or may not) deliver it on their own time. Our opinion means squat.

My money says Samsung will release 2.2, contrary to public opinion, but at the worst time possible. This phone series will either sit on 2.1 until it's out of date, or it will get 2.2 and be considered end of life.
Samsung is VERY bad about keeping up with their phones. They'll fix half the issues after the phone is about to pulled from the shelves, then shortly after release an entirely new phone with the past problems fixed. So on, and so forth.

I mean, hell, the GPS has been broken on every Samsung phone I've seen sporting android! I, unlike some others, actually need the GPS to work in my phone on a regular day to day basis. Being accurate to 300ft or some other ludicrously large number might be acceptable if I were piloting a Titan out of Eve (game, look it up), but for tracking my overall speed, distance run, etc., or even driving, that's not acccetpable.

My view on it all: they just don't care what happens. If they can make some money off of something that's big right now, they're fine with stopping there. Why bother making something that works properly, and spend time keeping it up to date and functional, when you can just pocket the money from people buying your stuff, and count it there?
