Poll: Do you read the tech blogs?

I am just about fed up with the sensationalist nature of the current group of tech bloggers. It seems to be less and less an impartial (or at least informative) review of current hardware, software, and trends as it does rabble rousing, flame bait and thinly veiled advertising.

If you regularly read the likes of Endgadget, Gizmodo, ZDNet, Arstechnica and the like, where do you see this going?

Corporate sponsorship! In reality that's all any of them are after, making money! If making product a sound better then product b to make a few dollars they'll do it!

I'd support (as in paid subscription) a good impartial, independent consortium of technical writers, even if it was laced with personal bias. That, at least, would be self-leveling with opposing views.

At least in the past some of the blogs had posted links to sources of information which would be useful, but I fear their marketing department advised them that that directs traffic away from their site so they have stopped doing it (or at least diminished considerably).

I thought one time it would be nice to see a blog with something like 10 writers. All being the most impartial people available but yet each still being a user of opposing products ie iPhone v Android. Then when they make a typical blog post with the review list it as,

• person a thinks...
• person b thinks...
• person c thinks...

Something like that so you can then take all of it and for your own opinion on whether to invest in that product for yourself or not. If you base your choice on the biased blogs out there right now they you'd buy everything on the market because it's all great according to them!

The biggest majority of them just steal the post or at least parts of it from other anyway. If they posted links then readers would click it and see that someone else came up with it beforehand!

my biggest thing about tech blogs now a days is that they dont cover new and exciting tech as much as they do cell phones and minor increases in existing tech. I used to read and comment on engadget daily now I barely check it out everything on there is cellphones or apple products now a days.

I read engadget more or less daily. I tried reading others but really it's all the same stories, and I like engadget's format, and they usually have decent articles.

I would say they're a good source of information. Despite the obvious bias and even sometimes nonfactual claims.

I've stopped reading Gizmodo and Endgadget awhile back when I could tell they were being quite bias with some of their articles. I want objectivity (or as much as possible) with what I read. I do feel that all of the blog sites recycle the news. What's posted by one blogger is taken up by them all. If they find it elsewhere...they should source the material.

I generally don't read tech blogs unless I'm looking for something in particular or something gets brought to my attention.

I *LOVE* anandtech.

I must admit, the problem I have is when I bought my ati 6870 x fire, I was expecting slightly better results.. I forgot the rule of never expect to get what you see..

It is hard to find reliable news on good tech.. even sites that try to be reputable have a few problems.. (they test using benchmarking software which never reflects real world performance).

I also hate all the blatant drama-lama obvious bias out there.

Yeah. Even if they though it was crap, just review it anyway and show why they think so. By not doing a review, they pretty much lost what little credibility they may have had in the first place. Now if they say product X is good (or bad), how can readers really trust that this time, they will be objective?

I tend to view tech blogs like any person posting comments on a forum. They have their own biases. You just try to filter out the useless information and opinion and try to pick out any useful information you may find.

I do like reading blogs. I consider it entertainment for the most part. For actually useful information, it's best to find someone with first hand experience and ask some specific questions.

It looks like I'm in the minority but I don't mind the bias seen in many of the articles. I can determine fact vs opinion but I enjoy reading what people are thinking. I check phandroid, engadget, gizmodo and droid-life regularly and the only complaint I have is that they all seem to constantly link back to each other so many times I'm reading the same news 3 or 4 times.
