so yea, couple days ago got a new 2 year contract with AT&T. Opt out of the iphones and joined the Xperia x10a family. So now I been reading some of the forums and supposedly the 2.1 is out for Xperia x10 in the US. So my question is how come I still don't have the update for it. Used the update software PC companion and SEUS and still it says my phone is up to date with the 1.6. So is it just AT&T that's blocking the update or is it just my phone that's getting shafted right now. Any input would be appreciated.

-Thx

There is no current update in the US for AT&T without debranding and rooting your phone. I have not found a way yet with the links that are around that are straight up working. SOme of the links within the threads are missing things, and some of the descriptions are a little left for your imiagination to figure out. There are some really good threads, I just havent been able to get them to work yet. Need to do some more reading. No legit updates from AT&T yet.

Boy did you make a HUGE mistake grabbing this phone... Per AT&T email from them 4 days ago, Still no idea when or even if we will ever get the 2.1... From what I could read between the lines, they are not attempting anything until SE has EVERY bug worked out of 2.1, to AT&T satisfaction. Take that what you will, but I read that as we are not getting 2.1 in the states with AT&T any time soon....

If you are still within your 30 day try to like phase, I would return this phone and grab sometrhing else with 2.1 and 2.2 in that phones future. From what AT&T is saying and even SE, 2.2 is not happening with this phone... That is why the X12 is coming out, go figure, but for us who have been in this trench for awhile, this is pretty much old news...

I have had my Xperia since August 20th with AT&T. I updated to 2.1 Global Generic following a very straightforward process outlined on XDA Developers Forum. I could not be happier with the performance of the phone. All settings were updated automatically. EVERYTHING works, 3G/H, Wifi, MMS, text and voice calls. The touchscreen is much more responsive and the display is a lot more vivid.

I know that AT&T may not release the update for our phones for quite some time. Once I realized that, I decided to flash my phone with the update. It took all of 10 minutes and any problems you might encounter are discussed within the 60 or so pages on the thread. You just have to read through them. Global firmware gets rid of all of the AT&T apps on your phone including the AT&T start up screen. With Z4Root from the market, I was able to root and remove the apps I didn't want such as Moxier Mail and Wisepilot.
I strongly disagree with Gunny in that you made a mistake buying this phone. It is the sexiest on the market and with the update has 720 HD Video recording that looks incredible. You can wait for AT&T to release the update or head over to XDA, do some reading and set your phone free.

I stand by my comments until AT&T and SE make the X10 2.1 operable. We as users, should not have to void our warranty and in essence reprogram the phone in order for it to do what SE promised it would do at the end of the 3rd Qtr of 2010. The big problem is AT&T is saying it may not upgrade to 2.1 and SE has said they will not upgrade the x10 past 2.1. So no 2.2 for the x10 from SE, and don't even bring AT&T into that disccusion. I have had this phone since the 2nd week in Aug and will not rehash all of what was promised and than broken. So I think the first lines of this post pretty much say it all..

I agree that as users, we shouldn't have to take matters into our own hands but I'm very happy that I did. The warranty issue is null for me. If I have a problem, I'm able to flash back to my original AT&T firmware. Just yesterday, the little clips on my USB charger stopped locking and I had to wiggle just to charge. I walked into an AT&T store with my phone and charger. The guy plugged my phone in to verify the charging issue I was having. He looked at the screen and said "Nice, you're running 2.1, huh?" I walked out of the store with a new cable. I wasn't surprised but he had no information about an update.

I think you should aim your displeasure more at AT&T & less at SE. You bought it from AT&T (or at least contracted with them) for this phone so they are the ones messing up the original code & screwing it up.

SE has done everything they've said they would with this phone so far. If you bought it from SE directly & had AT&T add it to their network, you wouldn't be upset because you would have received a globally loaded phone & would have had the 2.1 update without jumping through hoops, right?

As this was the first SE Android phone ever made, I didn't expect it to be 2.2 upgradable. I knew it had 1.6 on it when I signed up for it in late September & am still happy with that decision.

Sorry you don't care for yours. It really is a nice phone.

I just got the Xperia X10 instead of an iPhone through AT&T a few weeks ago and it's my first SmartPhone. I got it because of the 8 MP camera. I was really interested to check out the whole world of apps. My Xperia runs Android 1.6 and the app I want requires Android 2.2 or newer. Since then, I've spent too many hours (like right now) to seemingly discover that between Sony, AT&T, and Google, the Xperia won't be getting beyond 1.6 for some undetermined time.

It's beyond ridiculous to have those major global companies not be able to provide timely updates for an OS for their customers! To read about Android 2.2 on other phones, but for it not to be on Sony/AT&T is dysfunctional.

This reminds me of why Apple is a superior user experience - the same company makes the hardware and the software. When I bought my 1st PC after owning Apples, I was amazed at how dysfunctional it was to try to get answers from Dell or Microsoft. Each pointed at the other company to solve problems.

I've got a couple of weeks left on my 30 day trial and I don't like my options - Xperia with an Android upgrade purely at the mercy of the dysfunction corporations, an iPhone 4 with Steve Jobs saying it's the user who needs to pay for Apple's problems, or an iPhone 3 which has a low MP camera.

Good luck to us all.

There are thousands of Apps, what do you "need" that requires 2.2 or higher?

If that is true and you knew that before you got the device, you should have never got it as even if the 2.1 upgrade happens now, it will be 2-6 months before 2.2 update occurs.

You may find another app that does a similar function that doesn't require such a current OS.

Good Luck and welcome to the forum.

Wow, this really sucks! I just got this phone also, & assumed it would be upgradable. I think I'll return it now. It' a shame because I like a lot of things about it. ESP the camera. I got it free but of course extended the contract for 2 yrs. I would really like a Samsung Captivate but I can't find one for $0-100, which is what I want to pay for a phone.
