Hey all,

I haven't been keeping up with the all the latest roms/kernels as I've been content with my current setup but with all the new fixes (GPS especially) I would like to get caught back up.. just not sure what route I should go from where I currently am.

My current setup is completely stock rom, rooted, de-binged/bloated via Titanium freeze, and running jt's voodoo v.0.2 kernel.

What do you rom/kernal experts think the best upgrade route would be from where I'm currently at? Can I simply upgrade to DJ05 and the new voodoo5 kernel? Is that even possible from my current setup or are there some other steps I'd need to take so I don't brick my phone?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

to flash DJ05 you will need to disable voodoo...well if flashing with one of jts roms as hes packaging kernels with them.

once disabled flash the modem, then the rom, then voodoo 5.

i will say voodoo 5 is not quite ready for primetime and it has bugs that may make you want to wait a few days :)

all of the files are irc only as well.

i will point out that modem is an odin flash

the rom a cwr flash....then let the phone boot fully

then boot to cwr and flash voodoo5

Thanks nitsuj17, very helpful info...

Are there any specific versions of the rom/kernel I should mention when asking in IRC for someone to send me the files? I would imagine there are probably a few versions of all them floating around out there.. Just want to make sure I get the ones that are compatible with each other...

Also what are the bugs with the new voodoo5 that you were referring to? Are they severe type issues or just minor annoyances?

I have just rooted my phone and installed CWM via ODIN with no issues. I then instlaled ROM manager and Titanium backup. I took a backup using CW in recovery menu and then took a backup of some apps in Titanium backup. I was wanting to now load jts1134 super clean rom and a non voodoo kernel via ROM Manager. Is there a certain order to do them in and will ROM manager load them right from the gui or will it simply d/l it and I have to reboot into CWR mode and do it there?
Real new to this if you couldn't tell and don't want to screw up my phone.
Thanks in advance!!

#1 do the rom and kernel separate.
#2 if you d/l from rom manager it will automatically send you into cwm the only problem with this is it will wipe your data..make sure when you go into cwm to wipe cache and do backup

when you hop into irc, make sure to say hi :) a lot of people just pop in and demand files and not everyone takes kindly to that. just come on over and introduce urself and then mention that you would like to get the DJ05 modem and a DJ05 rom (jts super clean 0.5, or something)

voodoo5 is good so far but there are still some bugs that may make you want to hold off (unless they got fixed last night i havent checked irc yet)

kernel or rom doesnt matter which order, but dont flash both at the same time. when d/ling from rom manager make sure you are on wifi for the rom as its 150 mb. when its done it ll give you the option to wipe data/cache...if you choose this you will loose all of your data (i do ti anyway) :)

personally when the option is there i d/l it on my computer put it on my sdcard and then flash it in cwr

wiping cache is good yes...data isnt *usually* neccessary although i do out of habit

Thanks for the quick responses guys!
From ROM manager there was a single checkbox to wipe data and cache, so I went ahead and checked it. It automatically rebooted into CWM and started the process. My question is should I use the Titanium backup I took to restore the data? My main concern is I have the Touchdown app/license installed for corporate email and do not want to lose that. It came backup and as expected all apps/data are gone.
Thanks again!

if you backed up touchdown in tibu afaik it should be there when you restore apps + data. every other app ive ever done has :)

Thanks for the help guys, ROM installed and apps restored with no issue! I chose the TouchWiz versus the ADW launcher and think I chose poorly. Can that be changed on the fly..and is ADW the preferred?

Download home switcher from the market....it allows u to switch launchers.

I think the majority of us use launcher pro plus....but adw is on par with it and many love it.

Or if you truly prefer adw and are committed to it and know you'll never use TW, 86 it for good, it saves resources since TW still runs underneath adw with homeswitcher

Also if you are running jt's clean rom which I think you are everything is already in system app so all you need to do is rename the TouchWiz30Launcher.apk to .old in Root Explorer and you're done [battery pull likely due to FC's]

Thanks guys! Really like the new launcher and not sure if it is my imagination but just having the super clean rom and adw launcher seems to reduce the lag I had prior. So, last question..is it worth changing the kernel now to a non-voodoo such as stupid fast? Wasn't really sure what that does to be honest.

just give it a try. Now that you are up and running switching kernels is easy and a trivial thing to do. I don't even make backups when I switch them and it takes about 10 seconds plus bootup time.

let me be clear..even though I don't do additional backups when changing kernels I still have a fairly recent backup to fall back on. So if you haven't backed up recently do so then play with kernels;)

Agreed. When I testing kernels for geeknik I'd sometimes flash a dozen kernels in a day and never made backups per se before each and every flash. Truth is I make a back up every 1-2 weeks at most, phone is just stable and reliable and cwm flashing have never failed. voodoo is a bit different though ;)

We have 1.2-1.25Ghz OC's but no one runs them anymore honestly
