Does anyone know of an app where I can download a map and then save it for future reference?

I have not come across an app for that..but why not download the map as a PDF / image and put it on your SD card / internal memory.

Or use a GPS program and use the map via that...

I'm assuming you want a hard copy of a map as you won't have a data connection (e.g. for google maps ) .. but a GPS program with a region specific map would work..just need to use GPS...

If and when TomTom comes out this would be good...

Try MapDroyd app. It can at least download and store the entire country Map.

Why don't you try RMap in Hero? It supports offline maps which can be created by using TrekBuddy Atlas Creator. It's a Java program in PC to extract map data from Google Maps and store them into a database file to be used by RMap.
