Root Trouble upgrading to OTA Froyo from unrevoked 2.1

Hi All,

I don't know a ton about Android but I rooted my wife's EVO using Unrevoked (I think the 2nd rev of Unrevoked) earlier this year. I have been having her ignore the upgrade notice that keeps popping up until now - I'd like to upgrade her to 2.2 so we can have video chat w/ Yahoo Messenger.

I downloaded the update and went to install and got the Android guy w/ the Exclamation Mark triangle thing. I've read thru a bunch of posts and it seems like most people recommend either unrooting by various methods then doing OTA update, or flashing a rooted 2.2 ROM.

Most of these posts are a couple months old from when the OTA came out and I was just wondering if there was a better way to go about doing this now that I am not finding. Bascially I want to:

Upgrade from rooted 2.1 to rooted, standard Sprint 2.2 without losing any data/apps.

Can someone point me to a step-by-step on how to do this or possibly a video walkthrough? Thanks so much, all.

Have you confirmed if you still have root since accepting the OTA?

1. If you aren't sure, boot into bootloader and confirm if you have S-ON or S-OFF
2. Download terminal emulator and type "su" (without quotes). If it returns with $ you are unrooted. If it returns with a # you are rooted.
3. So now if you are confirmed to be rooted still you will need to download rom manager from the market and reflash clockwork or amon. Or you can go over to XDA and download either one and manually install them. Then once you have flashed a new recovery just go ahead and flash this rom: [ROM] 11/21/10 | SPRINT LOVERS | 2.2 | 3.30.651.3 | Radio/Wimax/PRI All-In-One - xda-developers This will update everything to the most current releases.
4. If you have confirmed you lost root then I would just re root with unrevoked and then flash the rom I posted above.

And finally if you just want to unroot completely then I would run the 3.29 RUU below.

thanks wrapkgb! Can you confirm if either of the methods you posted will erase the contents of the device or should everything be kept in tact either way?

I always assume it will erase everything...if it doesn't great.

9 times out of ten when I read something and it says it doesn't...it does...and vise versa

The above steps will reset all your info, so you lose it all, but you can follow my procedure, as posted here, look towards the bottom for my post, and it will work for you, good luck:

You can buy Titanium Backup and do a batch backup and not have to worry about all this. It amazes me how people potentially compromise the operation of the phone just because they don't want to wipe everything or they don't want to spend 6 friggin bucks. If you are gonna mess around with rooting, you NEED Ti backup!!!!!!!!!!
