Android 2.1 HERO News

Before you all throw a huge fit, the GSM version of the Hero will almost definitely be getting the update long before the Sprint version does. You may have noticed that the 2.1 test builds are all of the GSM flavour. It's pretty clear that HTC is testing and optimising the GSM update before adapting it to the CDMA versions, such as for Sprint.

Also, there has already been mentioned that HTC will be releasing the 2.1 GSM update by Christmas. It's hard to tell if it's from a legitimate source or not.

Yes, but at least the Hero doesn't need to be scrapped and started again like RIM OS (And I have a BB too).

Actually, I didn't think the RIM os was that bad. At the end I was running the new 5 OS betas though.

What I didn't like about BB's was the daily battery pulls, HUGE lack of apps and BES. I had BIS and wasn't going to pay the extra for BES. With the Hero I get all that rolled right in.

I didn't get the sometimes buggy behavior with my BB that I often get with Android. Plus the BB is super simple to use and navigate.

THat said, I wouldn't go back. Android offers far more of what I need/want.

It has been confirmed that it will be comming, but unfortunatly no one knows when. It was expected this side of christmas, but I think it has more or less been pushed back to Q1 2010. HTC has never given a date of when it will ship, just that it will ship at some point.

You will need to download some software to update your handset. First of all you will need a program called 'HTC Sync' which can be obtained from HTC's website (here is a link to the Support Page), and secondly you will need the ROM image (when it is released).

Is your handset unlocked, or is it carrier branded? If it is unlocked, you will be able to get the update from HTC's offical website, if it is carrier branded you will need to go to your carrier's website.

If it is a new hero, then it is worth checking to see if you have the latest software. Open up Settings > About Phone > Build Number. If it looks like 1.76.xxx.xx then you need an update.

Thanks vido.ardes,

I have a new Hero and the firmware is 1.5, I also have a MAC so looking for HTC sync that isn't a PC version and also is hopefully free. It's locked to Orange (sorry not t-Mobile) so I'll have to go through the operator for the ROM image.

Cheers

You can find the ROM update image for Orange on HTC's site, via the link I provided in my first post.

As far as I know there is no software for the Mac that will sync with android phones at the moment, you may have to go down the Boot Camp route I am afraid.

htc.com/nl/SupportViewNews.aspx?dl_id=671&news_id=254 i upgraded my hero with new buildnumber but it still says firmware 1.5 and no big changes can someone explain

If you have Sprint version of the Hero once they let it out you should be able to do it over the air as I did with the last little up date.

I dont have the sprint but there so much roms for example the eclair 2.1 what confuses my mind is will the android 2.0 be better than all of the roms whats available now or just a better one or maybe the best thats compatible with my htc heto
