Verizon is buying back Eris's for $132

I'm not sure if this is wide spread, but I called VW this afternoon after my 4 hour old refurb had a broken trackball. They gave me 2 options, get a new refurbished Eris, or I could sell my Eris back to them for $132, and apply that towards an existing upgrade on my account. so I ended up getting a brand new Incredible that's being sent to me on Thursday. I don't know if this is all over, but I was directed to Verizon Trade In . If this is open to everyone, jump on it if you're looking to upgrade, and can't wait for the Q1 phones.

or if someone on your plan has an upgrade you can use theirs, but then they have a new contract, you just get the phone, im considering using my fathers upgrade to the the droid pro as a backup to my incredible since he always buys full price as he breaks more phones than my gf has shoes lol

that,s exactly right. i should clarify that i'm getting the rebate cards in the mail, as per usual. however, the rep i spoke with was able to charge the process to the account, so there were no bank accounts involved. the rebate cards can be applied to the account balance, or in the worst case, just to my bank, and i'll pay it off from there.

Caddyman, I switched to Verizon last December and got my Eris w/ a 2-year agreement. I want to switch to another droid phone, possibly the DX. Are you happy with yours? Even though I'm only 1 year into my 2-year contract would I be able to get the deal you did (299 - 100 - 132)? Can this be done in-store or is it online only? Thanks.

this can not be directly credited to your account. you do the online trade in deal, they send you a gift card for the amount, you then can apply it to your account (or use it for any vw service/purchase).

i did this when i upgraded to the DX. price was $200 minus the $132 trade in on the eris, so i got the phone for $68
and did you have to sign another new 2 year contract for the phone? Was this done online or in person?
Thanks,
Jimbo

The Verizon gift card is the same as if you went into WalMart and made a trade and they put it on a store gift card. You can use it for any item in the store both online or in store (must be a corporate store). You can also apply the balance to a future Verizon bill. It is completely separate from any deal that Verizon is currently offering.

This means that if you want a new phone, you will follow whatever current promotion is being offered for that phone or pay full price if you aren't due for an upgrade. If you are one year into your contract and decide to upgrade, you will get any upgrade pricing that comes along with the phone you want and this Verizon card has nothing to do with that. This means that you will sign a two year contract if you want to buy the phone at fully subsidized pricing. Then, when they ask you for your method of payment, you tell them that you have a gift card and they use whatever is on that card and you will owe the rest of the phone balance if one is left. You may want to pay $200 for the X and use the gift card to buy all of the accessories. It is your call how you use it. Just must be used for a Verizon purchase. Make sense?

When u buy one get one free don't you have to get a 2 year contract with the 2nd one as well. Or don't you have to put a data plan with the second one as well?

Yes to both questions. All Smartphones must have a data plan. And this is why they offer such a deal. They're gonna get the money back out of you in the form of your monthly voice + data plans. Of course, you can buy both phones at full price and have no contract. It's awful expensive to do it that way though and you still have to buy a data plan.

So what's the draw to getting two phones if u have to pay that much for both of them. I would rather just only get the one phone.

If you have a significant other or family member who also wants a smartphone, then it would be a good idea to get them both together because you are looking at $199 after rebate, $132 credit toward that, and you get the other DX free. If you are the only one that wants the phone, then yeah, it would be plain silly to get two phones just because.

There's always the ebay/craigslist route to sell your Eris. I used an upgrade from my family share to get the Incredible and then sold my Eris on craigslist for $200. Best Buy was giving the Inc's away for free w/ a 2 yr contract when I got it so I got a much better phone and $200. Incredible deal ;)

Another option is adding a line to an existing family share plan and getting a new phone. You activate it on the new line, add data plan, then have them transfer the new phone to your (whoever is getting new phone) line, removing data from new line, adding it to your line and then have them make the new line a dummy line. You're charged a pro-rated price for the x amount of minutes the dummy line had data (talking pennines, a dollar at the most) and you'll have to pay an extra $10 a month to have the dummy line so this option is only good if you're desperate for a new phone and you don't mind spending an extra $120 a year for getting a new phone at discounted price. Just trying to give you some options is all. Good luck

Ok, so just to be clear, I can just call customer service and ask them to buy back my phone? Is that correct?

Follow the link given above (in the first post) and it walks you through the process step by step. They send you a prepaid envelope and you drop the phone in and put it in your mailbox. I went for this option because there's no hassle. You have 30 days to get the phone in at the locked in price of $132, so if you decide to try for Craig's List or Ebay and get more money, then nothing is lost.

To clarify... if i'm only 1 year into my two year contract... I can get a DX or Incredible for $200? (full retail price is more than $200...correct?)

And...should I un-root it before sending it in? Or does that matter?

Correct. You will probably be charged a $20 upgrade fee.

I'm going to unroot my phone but it probably doesn't matter either way.
