Root Clockworkmod or AmonRa?

I'm just about to reroot my Desire, and have never used Amon Ra before. Which one's better? Clockworkmod/Amon Ra?

Firerat has this to say about the issue:

hate about clockwork

• you don't get to confirm actions
• you can't get a console on a g1

love about clockwork

• robust partition formats
• navigate folders for zips
• find *all* zips ( not just one page )
• selective nand partition restore
• handy rename backup in ROM Manager

Wondered whether this is still true in the latest versions of AmonRa..Cos, I know that Clockwork now offers confirmations, so that part is outdated..

Are there are more differences-more like features of Amon Ra where it's better than Clockwork? And are there distinct cons on Choosing Ra?

I've recently discovered the selective nand restore in clockwork. Very useful.

Never used amonra. I have no need. As far as I know, partition of sd direct from recovery is possible in amonRA

i moved to amonra 2.0.0
you can partition ext from recovery in amonra which you cannot do in clockwork. you can only do it via rom manager
other than that they are pretty similar
(oh the nandroid is smaller on ra's as it tars the sd_ext section)
im wondering if either support the new data2sd for backing up

That's quite a pertinent question..
I would assume that Nandroid wouldnt backup the Data2SD partition, would it, Dan? Since it's actually not an ext partition, but an additional FAT32..

I suppose a third party partition backup tool is needed, a cloner of the likes of Norton Ghost..Guess Android itself does not have any..

But of course none comes close to the convenience of Nandroid.

I suppose one would have to use a combination of a partition imager plus Nandroid for the rest of Android specific parts like /system and /boot. /data should be remounted after Restoring the image. This is theoretical. I should be able to say more after trying out DATA2Sd myself.

Hmm..So a plain Nandroid restore can do it? Provided the second FAT32 is empty?

As I say, the ext file MAY need to be there already. To be honest, you'd really have to go out od your way to get rid of it (eg format via gparted).

But if the ext file is there, backup and restore is flawless

And none of those adb commands need be repeated?

Say I wish to try data2sd after working with app2sd+(after previously working with data2sd, of which I have a Nandroid )(for whatever idiotic reason.. ), I delete the ext partition, I was working with, recreate the FAT32 partition and copy the ext file onto it (would that work? Is it a viewable file on FAT32?) and just do a Nandroid restore should work? Nothing else?

Probably but I doubt you can easily copy the ext file. Windows doesn't recognise multiple primary fat partitions.

If you look at the data2sd guide, there is one line that creates ext file. The one starting dd. Do that I'm adb then nandroid restore I reckon will work but not sure

pretty much, amon seems to be more active recently aswell and keen to get people on board by listening and attempting to add their features.

be warned only 2.0.1 backs up the entire ext partition. 2.0.0 only backed up apps related and nothing else with in it

amon ra is now native on desire and not a hack/port from n1. he supports it

i have just downloaded the clockworkmod recover .zip from Koush's site, i have currently got amon RA installed, but would like to have clockwork back.... what i need to know is, the .zip i have just downloaded, do i flash it as a .zip or what? I installed clockwork via rom manager, but today trying to flash a new rom i put phone into recovery and it's still amonRA????? Anyone help?

ROM Manager uses a 'Fake-Flash' method and doesn't permanently flash a new recover - you have to do this with unrEVOked again or (if S-OFF) flash in FASTBOOT

Thanks Eddy. Yeah i have S-off, so what do i do? go into fastboot and flash the .zip i have just d/l from koush's site? how do i do that with amonRA? i'm not that much of a n00b, it's just i don't know my way around amonRA that well and im scared of F***ing it up! I flashed amonRA via that fastboot commander, can't i do that with clockworkMod?

AmonRA is a better recovery, though, so might as well stick with it
