No rant, just going back to an old flip phone

Just curious if anyone has just decided to go back to a simple cell phone. I did today, mostly to save $44 per month, but also because touchscreens can feel so unreliable and finicky. I enjoyed my Hero for 9 months, with some frustration on many levels. It was never ROCK SOLID like an old flip phone, then there is the battery to contend with. I would have a hard time picturing someone in the military using a touch screen, no way, I could hang up on my superior if my cheek hit the screen, lol, jk, but maybe you know what I mean. I also looked at the amount I use all that Android has to offer and didnt find it really enhanced my life ( isnt that why we all want these cool smart phones ?) Ime not saying they are not for everyone, because they are damn cool, but sometimes simple is better?

I would love to hear anyones opinions on this. I even cut off text messaging just to make sure I am very arcane now, the minimalist approach.

I will want a smartphone at some point though, I think they need an overhaul in some way. In two years the procesors will be huge, no maybe they can put a button that can make it not mess up... any thoughts ?

? I'm confused. You want back in tech because in two years technology is going to be amazing? It's amazing now.

Tech in these phones have so many flaws, so yeah I want to go back to a solid device is all ime saying bud. I never had any worries with a good samsung or, sanyo flip phone.
In two years these smartphones will be very refined and hopefully usable in any condition, till then give me a hardcore flip phone !

Nothing wrong with that. I loved my hero and love my epic even more but I would give up having a cell phone in a heartbeat if I could get away with it.

I am back to a flip phone because I need the old voice mail so that others on my plan can reply to voicemails.

I still carry my Hero, since I still find many of the features useful. I never did much surfing or other online functionality anyway, so I am happy this way. The best of both worlds, but I do now carry 3 cell phones... 1 work, 1 personal and my Hero.

I had a Hero for a year and loved it. I did have a couple of issues with it though. I keep my phone in my front pocket and the Hero would get woken up all the time because the button to wake it was too easy to press. I had to keep a pass-pattern on it for that reason. My other gripe was that it was slow.

I have an EVO now which is awesome. I still keep the Hero around though. With WiFi it still does all the things it used to do except phone calls (and with Skype it can even do that!). So, I basically use it as an iTouch now.

Hmmm I never thought about just using wifi.. I didnt think the hero could get Skype ?

Yes, Skype is available. I have it installed. In all honesty though I've not used it. I don't know anyone on Skype.

As for WiFi, I put the Hero in airplane mode to turn off the cell-phone radio and then then turn on WiFi. Works just fine.

I do not think I could go back to a non-smartphone at this point. I rely on it heavily for work and play alike.

I totally respect the people that have gone back to a simpler cell phone though. You should use what works for you.

Also what do you mean by play, gaming and internet ?

I already miss my phone, its only been 3 days. I sometimes feel like I missed out on some apps and features while I had it that made it life enhacing ?

Google has got me. There isn't anyway I could go back to a 'simple' phone. Too many things help keep me organized. With Google Calender to Gmail, using these things on the fly without being at a computer or being somewhere with wifi makes things a little easier.

Well, I'm in the Army, and I don't know many people of any rank who don't have iPhones or Android touch screens.

I am a business software engineer. I use it heavily for email, document exchange, storage, and reading, like .PDF files, and Microsoft Office documents. Additionally, having my contacts and calendar synced through the cloud to my computer and my handset is just a Godsend for keeping organized. I do not know how I did it without that for so many years.

As for play, I count that as anything that is outside of work. I use it for trips with the GPS of course, checking my Twitter account, and playing various games. That is just the tip of the iceberg, of course, but I think you get the idea. Very soon, I will be developing Android apps. I hope to use my Sprint HTC Hero as a nice way to test them out in a real environment, outside of a computer based Android emulator.

Yes, I did and still do. I have been using a laptop constantly since 2003.

I, however, am not always at my laptop, especially if I am at a client site or in a meeting or just out to lunch. Just being able to accomplish a lot of the things I can do on my laptop, by using my handset is really helpful and easier than carrying around a laptop.
