At this time, even with the idiosyncracies of Samsung Moment, none of the available choices persuade me to upgrade. I fall in the group that is aware and have adapted to the problems of Moment. Over the last year, I have spent too much of my precious time making this phone "work" to give more money for another phone and go thru the whole process again.

Disclaimer: may skip reading the following:

After purchasing Moment and renewing a 2 year contract, we were at the mercy of Samsung and Sprint pleading/begging to fix the problems.

Samsung, Sprint, or any provider/manufacturer correctly punish you with restocking fee to exchange a bad phone. So, why gamble.

Rather than buy a phone, go thru frustration spending time making it "work", this time around, I will be well advised to spend time to research before buying a phone that is worth the extra money.

i am sort of leaning towards the LG Optimus S. but... it not really much of an upgrade from my Hero and your Moment.

I am holding out for the HTC Knight/EVO Shift/G2. See what that looks like.

I don't understand... the Evo / Epic and even the Optimus are huge upgrades to the Moment. No comparison...

But if you're waiting for some more fairy dust and magic in a future phone, for reasons I've not clearly comprehended so far in this thread, then waiting is always the right answer. Maybe in 2012 there will be a phone that will be worthy of upgrading from the mighty Moment.

Hey AndroidSPCS, I have seen you make this argument before with a philosophy to the effect -- the earlier you upgrade, the faster you qualify for the next upgrade. That is great if one measures how many different phone models you have used in a given period of time. Between Nov. 2010 thru 2011 you have used/collected: Moment, Evo, Epic, Optimus S, Vibrant, and Captivate (T-Mobile). And I appreciate your helpful posts/reviews in respective forums. pastafarian appropriately called this "phone hoarder"

However, I do not believe in upgrading just because one is eligible. I evaluate how much my productivity will improve if I upgrade. At this time, none of the available choices persuade me to upgrade. If you wanted an Android phone with a slide-out physical keyboard, w/o the 4G-fee, what would you recommend?

The strategy of Samsung and Sprint is to have an Android phone at various price points: Epic ($250), Moment ($200), Transform ($150), Intercept ($100) to acquire more Android customers. And as of today, LG Optimus S seems to be the best value for the money. But for existing customers of Moment and Hero (especially that is running 2.2), who do not want to pay the 4G-fee, in my opinion there is no choice.

Personally, I am cautious because I feel duped by both Samsung and Sprint on my Moment purchase, which has problems that's not fixed with 4 updates, is EOL in 11 months, while we are stuck with a 24 month contract. At this point, Sprint has no offering to even make a fair exchange.

i understand where you are coming from.

I think my hero is better than the moment. I am looking too. and I not sure I want the 4G $10 charge either. So I am waiting for a better use of my upgarde.

but.. I would not blame too much on Sprint. The major part of the blame goes to Samsung.

Yes, thanks to xda-developers, Hero has 2.2.

Major part of the blame does go to Samsung, but quality of a phone also reflects on Sprint service. As we are seeing, among other things, good phones draw customers, bad phones shrink customer base.

i just learned something today.. a mod.. that gave new life to my hero.

it completely doubled my available memory for apps. this helped out with performance as well. Firerat memory mod

There's no such thing as a 4G fee.

Actually, there is. You pay it if you use any Sprint phone capable of usinig 4G. So it's a "4G whether you use it or not" fee. It's also been called a "premium data" charge. $10/month on top of whatever you pay for your plan, just for the pleasure of using a 4G-capable phone like the Evo or Epic. The Optimus won't cost you the extra $10 because it's not 4G-capable.

At least the 4G premium fee uncaps your 3G data limit as well. So for like the Optimus you have a 5GB limit where as the Evo doesn't have a limit of 3G or 4G. So even if you aren't in a 4G area you still get a little something.

I'm going to go with the evo but next year when the newer phones hit I'm selling it and buying the newer phone outright to get back on time with my upgrade. It really sucked to have upgraded in December last year and then see everyone else getting newer/better phones in June and having to sit with my moment until now. I figure I'll just bite the bullet and get what's hot and give my evo to my son who will no doubt be hating his moment with a passion by then.
