Since it is now rooted... does this mean it is Unlocked or can be Unlocked and that we would be able to use the T-Mobile version on AT&T's network? New to Android and trying to learn.

From what I have read, XDA developers can get it on AT&T but they don'y have 3g working yet, only Edge. They can also use the T-Mob Tab to make and receive calls.

Well for starters you can use 'root apps' such as Titanium Backup which will allow you to backup not only Market apps but all your paid apps as well.
Then there's LCD Density Changer which by changing the dpi will enhance the visual looks on your Tab.
Another tool is Hot Reboot widget which allows you to reboot your Tab without having to press & hold the power button and another tool to clear all the cache in one foul swoop.
The list goes on.....

Rooting and unlocking are two different things.

Rooting: is getting root level control over the phones software. It's akin to having administrative privileges on a windows machine. Once a device has been rooted you can lose the root if you put a different ROM on it, that is not pre-rooted.

Unlocking: is disabling the firmware lock that the carrier has put on the device that will not allow it to use a different carriers SIM card in it. Once you unlock a phone it will remain unlocked no matter what ROM it is running. Now since the Galaxy tab is sold without a contract, in theory it shouldn't have a carrier locking, but given AT&T's track record in these matters, I wouldn't be surprised if it did have a lock.

Pretty sure they never will. ATT and T-mo use different frequencies on 3G.

Unless my info is way (like iphone3gs days) outdated.

No, you are still correct AT&T uses different 3G frequencies than T-mobile does.
AT&T's 3G is: 850Mhz and 1900Mhz while T-mobile uses 1700Mhz and 2100Mhz. So unless the Galaxy Tab has some kind of software defined radio, I doubt they will get 3G to work across carriers.

Nope. The only things that wipe data or applications off the device would be a firmware change or a hard reset.

A firmware change won't wipe your Tab but depending on the upgrade it can be wise to perform a Factory Reset either before or afterwards.

Whilst I am here, there's an upgrade available on Kies for the Tab.
The upgrade is showing as JJ7. My Tab which I pickup up last week is JJ3.

I have not yet performed the upgrade, namely because the last time I tried to upgrade my SGS Kies 'bricked' the phone and it took a long time with the 3-Button Recovery, Odin and a ROM from samfirmware.com to fix it.

Definitely.

Having said that, providing you run RyanZA's z4root App you can un-root at any stage.

I went to the site, registered, and tried to find updates or downloads. It didn't come back with anything. I haven't found a download for Kies yet. Do you have to search for updates for your specific device in order to download Kies for your PC? Thatd what I did but it comes back with nothing.

You need to go to Samsung Support then where it says Mobile Devices click on it.
This will then bring up a window. Now on the left pane select Tablets and that will bring up in the middle pane Tablets, so click on that. This will finally bring up in the right hand pane Galaxy Tab, so click on that and then on the far right a picture will show the Tab and underneath the word 'Select'. Click on that.

Now look where it says 'Manuals' & 'Software' and click on the word 'Software'. This will then list all available softwares.
Look down and you will see there is a file named 'SAMSUNG Kies,PC Sync' and it has a version number of '1.5.3.10103_102_1'
What you need to now do is click under the file column on the .EXE icon.
This will now download the Kies program to your PC.

Next step will be once downloaded click on the .exe file and install to your PC.

Try this web page link to see if it takes you to the right part on the Samsung Support pages.
If so you don't need to worry about all the bits I told you to click on at the beginning.

It does not matter where you get the Kies program from, they are all the same.
Once you have installed it and the USB drivers have been installed (automatically done whilst installing Kies) when you then next connect your Tab to your PC Kies will automatically load.
Just make sure on your Tab when the connection method appears on screen that you select 'Kies', otherwise the Tab will not connect.

That's what I concern, so I will not go to root.

I take it you read the web page in the Link I gave (the one from Samsung to all Service Centre's).
You do take your chances with rooting and you can always do it temporary using RyanZA's 'z4root' App.
The temporary option does not hit EXT4 only EXT2, as such the root does not survive a reboot. The temp option is ideal if you wish to do something quickly. Once done all you do is reboot your machine and all root traces disappear.

One last question, we don't have a SBF yet, do we? I've got it for the DroidX (although I've never had to use it). Also, I would imagine that the above list works for all rooted stuff, like my X (DroidX - not X-wife, she'll never be rooted!)

SBF ~ No, have not seen it.
All Phones ~ Yes, it shouldn't matter which phone you run the root software on.
The 'X' Wife ~ Love it, had me in howling laughter for ages. Even now whilst thinking about it makes it difficult to hold the Tab and type.
