ok...i'm extremely close to pulling the trigger and rooting my Dx. I've done some light phone hacking in the past. I just want to make sure i have my thinking right.

1. root phone using one of the various methods
2. do a nandroid backup
3. deodex
4. apply custom Rom if i want.
5 then apply theme if i want?

question 1. how painful is it to return to stock if needed?

thanks in advance. yes i've read the 30 gigs of how to's and guide's to rooting but i like to double check.

^^^^ agreed. As my signature file says, it's good to learn how to restore your phone in case anything happens. Truth be told, if it does, you can always learn sbf if you need it.

My list.

1) Find, d/l and use z4Root. It is by far the fastest and easiest root method. I've tested it thoroughly.
2) D/l Titanium backup pro, Rom Manager, Droid x Bootstrapper. You need these to do any modifications.
3) In Rom Mgr, select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" a splash screen will come up. in it, select "droid x" It'll ask you for super user permissions. Grant it.
4) In Droid X bootstrapper select "Bootstrap Recovery"
5) Go back to rom manager and scroll down to "backup current Rom". Do it. This is your backup in case something happens. I have backups of several roms. :)

That's what I'd do first if I were you. It's not painful to go back to stock as long as you are on a rom built on 2.2 (2.3.15 ota). Since there is no full sbf file for the new lead 2.2.1, you can't go back to stock easily. I'd play around in the 2.2 (2.3.15) roms for now.

6) Have fun!
7) Ask plenty of questions. :)

Edit: There is a full sbf restore for 2.2.1, so I'd feel free to pay around with the new roms. It just came out tonight.:)

Okay I'm almost set to give it a go. I have all the apps installed but one

What does titanium pro give me that titanium free doesn't? I'm not trying to be a tight wad but I see a lot of people saying get titanium pro that its worth it. So what makes it worth it over the free one?
You can only have one backup of everything with the free and 25 with the paid version. On the free version you will have to hit ok or something to restore EACH app, with the paid it's just one click and everything that you choose is restored (especially useful if you have a lot of apps)

note the edit to my post. there is now a full sbf for the new leak so feel free to play!

yeah actually the other night when i was putting all this together and getting the sbf for 2.2 i was seeing the traffic for the new one about to come out. I'll grab it.

next question. if i need to restore my phone how do i apply the sbf?

never mind i found it in the how to. I think for now i'll just still stick with playing on the 2.2 until all the unknowns are worked out on the new one.
