Curious what people think about psychics

I somehow wound up in a heated discussion about this on another forum. Long story short, another poster has no issue with psychics. While he admits that they're basically frauds who are doing nothing more than cold reading he doesn't see the harm in someone going to one to contact their dead loved one. The person leaving feels better and the psychic gets money for their time so everyone is happy. Personally, I feel that anyone exploiting grieving and vulnerable people for money is scum and should be taken out and shot. I'm curious what everyone else feels about the subject.

Way they get info is they fish with questions and people don't realize they are telling them what they need. Best way to piss one off is to just say I don't know you tell me as you're suppose to be all knowing.

tof a person wants to go to one. I see no harm in it, but don't argue they are for real.

There is a scientific test available for any phychic to take. The first one who passes gets some prize. I cannot recall the exact size of the prize, but I think it is either $100,000 or $1,000,000. As of now, there were a few people to took the test, but no one has passed. Many famous psychics choose not to take the test.

Geese I wonder why? Lol. It was like that Sylvia brown that was on montel show. She told a family that their abducted son would come home alive and safe soon. Well they found the kid and he was dead 6 months before Mrs brown made her prediction. After that you didn't see much if her. This is one reason hate psychic.

I don't take issue with the carnival fortune teller types as most people know it is all for fun. I also don't have a problem with the "psychics" that actually try and help the police find missing people or solve crimes as long as they are pretty accurate and aren't out for money and fame.

The ones that try to become famous and make a bunch of money or get a TV show are just con artists. Trying to make someone believe that you can speak to their dead relative is pretty scummy.

If there are real honest to God psychics out there, they wouldn't be trying to get rich off of people or get famous. Most of them would have already won the lottery or a ton of money playing in Vegas.

as i see it...

some one is paying for a service...
some one is willing to try to fill that service need...

as long as it is not being forced on the other...
there is no harm.

movies make millions to make you believe in something that that is not real.

I dont believe in psychics.. but I like to hope.. it is possible.

Do you believe in free will? If you do, then you don't believe in psychics. If psychics are real... Then we all live in a predetermined path and our concept of free will is a lie. If you believe in fate, then you also don't believe in free will.

I believe in free will, but I also believe that actions have reactions and those reactions can set things on a certain path. A butterfly effect in a manner of speaking that can indirectly or directly effect the outcome of certain events. Take the wrong train and meet the love of your life or stop for coffee and miss a major car wreck. While I wouldn't call these things fate or detiny I think they could possibly be predicted. There is to much unknown to close the door on possibilities.

as a 4th grader, I tried to do an algebra problem on the board my teacher just put up there just to show us what algebra was. Just because I had noble intentions to complete the problem and I tried, it didn't mean I had a snowball's chance in HELL of completing it.

meh, I may think moderators who are on power trips are scummy while they may think they are doing noble work... I'm sure you don't care about my opinion on the matter, I'm sure they don't care your opinion on how they make money

why wouldn't they? Maybe they saw that winning the lottery was going to lead to bigger problems....

Bottom line, as long as there are people who are gullible, there will be people willing to take advantage of them. I think of it as social darwinism... creates smarter people. You notice, nobody buys "Miracle tonics" from travelling salesmen anymore? Why not? Because people evolved and realized they were just cough syrup in a cool bottle.

on a side note, I had a co-worker, about 10 years ago, try to sell me a bottle of pills that was a cure to AIDS... cooky ole bish for sure. It must have worked because I still don't have AIDS :p

Ja i think it's fine if some people like to play the odd harmless bar joke / game and "read" a palm or some impossible dreamt up crap like that... only for fun... however...

But when they actually start making MILLIONS AND BILLIONS... then i have a HUGE problem with that kind of scum...

Take this criminal scum for example...

John Edward - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Psychics fake spirit mediums, actually money monkeys - Sci-Tech

These so called "Mind Readers" are no different to people that pretend to "heal" people with "super natural healing powers from god".... what a load of utter bull shit!

Here's another scum bucket that shud be in JAIL FOREVER....and never let out ever again and he can rot there forever...he shud be in jail for criminal activities and theft and his dead body can be used to feed the earthworms as fertilizer...

Benny Hinn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What criminal scum. He shud be thrown in jail... what kind of criminal scum does this?...

I would LOVE to see this Benny Hinn loser heal AIDS and as well as cancers!

I think they are just scum buckets that prey on those that are desperate and have gone a bit crazy and not feeling that sane or down in life and have little options sadly... Benny Hinn could always be used as fertiliser when he is dead...

Sorry for being rude but i HATE these kinds of things... they are sinister scum. They don't care about anything or anyone and are just trickster scum buckets and only care money and themselves.....

That is just crazy madness... look here:

Yahoo! Canada Answers - Isn't it funny Benny Hinn is a billionaire and every Christian I ask has "never given him a cent"?

My mom has psychics come to the house from time to time and then has a few friends over. They go in a room alone for a few minutes, fork over a bunch of cash, and come out thinking they now know something they didn't know before. It never made any sense to me. My mom won't even tell me how much it costs since she knows I would laugh at her for wasting her money.

I dont really believe in psychics, but unless you are one (assuming they do exist) you would have to understand how it seems like a con... But as people are saying, there is free will... You dont have to pay these people, but if it gives you a sense of peace then more power to them.

It is borderline the same thing as a psychiatrist for all the suburban people who really dont have any actual issues...

There's been a market for psychics (by many names and titles) for ages. They definitely serve a need in some people. What's interesting is that the people who they cater to run the entire spectrum of society, from the poorest of the poor to national leaders, and from ancient times to modern times.

Sylvia Browne and John Edward have both been busted red-handed with operatives in audiences and all the other tricks and amusing slight of mind techniques they use. But they persist and are doing well.

Apparently, they have a national or worldwide holiday that comes on September 11th. They stoppped work to celebrate on that day and completely missed warning us of the events of that day.
