Root Hacking my SI / Customization code - so that I can upgrade to Android v2.1 - Very confused!! :-/

I want to update my Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 from Android v1.6 to Android v2.1.

I have been researching online for hours how to upgrade to 2.1.

I used SuperOneClick to "root" my phone. However, although I did get the message "Root Complete!" I don't see any difference except for there is a "Superuser Permissions" icon on my screen amongst my other apps. The icon is a little man dressed in black holding a rifle/gun.

I tried downloading "Superuser" application from the Android market, but I kept getting "Installation Unsuccessful."

I tried rooting my phone again, using SuperOneClick. But again, I don't see any difference.

I followed the directions in the "Root/Unroot - a very detailed explanation" thread. I had debugging enabled. I had my SD card unmounted and removed from the phone.

My SI is not in the list of SI codes to which A2.1 is currently available. There were lots of guides online today on how to hack this. However, my root did not appear to work, and also one of the steps in these guides was "Change your SI or Customization Code" - yet I could not find anywhere online which told me how to do this.

I'm at a total loss.

There is another guide to rooting your X8 here: Alternative rooting method for 2.1 (advanced) - xda-developers However this requires the download of "Superuser" application, and as I already said, this did not download for me.

I have no idea how to root my phone. I have only had the phone about two weeks. I am very computer-literate, but I am not familiar with how phones work.

Can anybody help please??

I want to update my Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 from Android v1.6 to Android v2.1.

it should be easy to upgrade to eclair 2.1 from donnut 1.6. You no need to install superuser or rooting your phone. You just need application to download the latest available software.

Here, i used to find the available software, the name is "Update_Service_Setup-2.10.11.10.exe". I will provide it for you then if you want.

or download by searching by internet tool searcher.

Did you instal root explorer after you root your phone ? You can download it from almost anywhere. I done it way xda forums says and it worked for me :)

After the superclick says rooted, download and isnstal app RootExplorer. Then find that file, i dont remember the name ! Dont forget to click Mount R/W ! Then in phone text mode edit that file. Save. Reboot and connect your phone to pc Pc Companion then imediately will recognize your device and tell you your updates are ready ! :)

Thank you all for your replies.

@ iwanarifs, kiz1983 & rosered: SEUS says my software is up to date.

Please Note: My SI code is not included in the list of SI codes for which the update has officially been released. I think I need to hack into my phone so that I can change the SI code on it.

1. You need your phone to be rooted. I use superoneclick 1.5.0. for me it works best. Newest versions do not work correctly at my X8. The attached archive X8win is the superonelick 1.5.0. You should enable usb debugging (settings->applications-development) and connect the phone to your pc. If you do not have drivers for the debug mode you can use the ones from the "X8 drivers" archive which i have also attached. After you have the drivers installed ,usb debug enabled and phone connected start superoneclick.exe and press root. You may need to wait 5 or even 10 minutes for it to complete. Wait until you see "Your device is rooted" popup.

2. Install root explorer. I have also attached it. Start root explorer. Open the "system" folder. In the upper right corner of root explorer you will see "Mount R/W" button. Press it. Now go to the build.prop file. Long press on it and select "Open in text editor". You should edit the following items:

ro.product.name=E15i_XXXX-XXXX where XXXX-XXXX is the customization code. For example mine is 1241-3708 but there is still no update for it.

ro.build.fingerprint=SEMC/E15i_XXXX-XXXX/sonyEricssonE15i/

ro.semc.version.cust=XXXX-XXXX

You should replace XXXX-XXXX with the desired customization code for all the lines listed above.

When ready press the menu button (left) while still in the text editor and press save.

3. VERY IMPORTANT - REBOOT YOUR PHONE.
4. After reboot check for update with Update service or PC Companion and it should find it.

If you edit your build.prop on your pc and return it back to the phone you should correct it's permissions so that it can be read by user, group and others and written by group using root explorer.
