Not enough space (2.2 Froyo)

I have the same issue! all Cache is cleared (including from Astro, browsers (cleared from the manage menu and within the browser), all apps that will go to SD are in the SD, and the only things left on the phone of any size is Facebook (19 mb) and Maps (11mb) and contacts (9mb)! on the facebook app its the data thats growing - does anyone know if deleting this will result in having to re sync all contact and calendar data? or is it just rubbish?!

i don't understand where all the space has gone?! I have 20mb free but i'd have to delete bout 5 small apps still on the phone (like astro and last.fm) to make enough space for the latest 2.2 update (which i secretly hope might fix this problem! i know, i know...)

My general thoughts on this are that there is a glitch somewhere and some app is reducing the amount of reported memory... has anyone apart from the OP had the same issue and resolved it?! or is my job for xmas going to be factory resetting and doing a (slightly more knowledgeable and selective) re-install of the releavant apps?

I have this issue and tried to get help from this forum but I didn't want to root. My memory kept getting lower and lower without me doing anything. I eventually did the force apps to SD trick but after only a few days I was back down on memory again to about 16MB. Eventually I had to do a factory reset and my memory went back up to 50MB without the force apps to SD trick but the same apps installed, same texts and same emails put back on the phone. Now it's a week and a bit later and I'm down to 15.99MB again and I still have the same apps as before.

I have contacted HTC about it and they're passing it onto their technical department. I know this won't really get me anywhere but I think more people need to report the problem and mention that it's caused by the 'davlik cache' as someone on another forum pointed out to me.

Here's the thread I tried to get help in if it helps:

Really, there's nothing HTC can do for you now, short of advising you to factory reset again or get a new phone.

The real issue here is that the phone simply does not have enough internal memory. Someone at HTC really wasn't thinking or they were being cheap. Since it's a hardware issue they can't change anything.

The only true solution, as has been stated multiple times, is to either accept the low memory and delete/clear as needed or to root and go A2SD+. Forcing apps to SD using the non-rooted method is possible, although from what I gather, not ideal.

Not to be rude at all, but I'm not sure what you hope to accomplish with all the posts on this subject matter.

Yes, rooting could solve you problem. In fact, it is option to deal with this issue. Refer the Danfrance's signature for details.

i thought there was a way to force app2sd for people who didn't want to root, done through adb

edit: yep, something like this should work [TOOL] Enable APP2SD on Froyo 2.2 devices without the need for root permissions - xda-developers

or google around for the actual adb commands and do it manually

There is but as I have pointed out it's only a temporary fix.

Well originally I was just trying to get help. I have seen plenty of threads about this and the responses are always the same i.e. clear caches etc. I tried everything I could but my space was still slowly dropping without my doing anything so I wanted to highlight that although those suggestions were valid it's something else causing it.

I don't believe it is a hardware problem, after the factory reset I had 50MB, I then installed Abode Flash updates (which I hadn't had room for before) and I had 38MB, happy days. Since then I've installed and then uninstalled 1 app, uninstalled another and now the space has still dropped right down again. Clearly the OS or something is using up that space over time and I don't see how just having more memory would fix that.

Well the mail app uses internal memory. All apps cache there too so yes it grows. If you use the HTC mail app, you have to delete mail. Having more space does resolve the issue. Your apps can go to sd ext if you use a2sd+ including dalvik cache, something froyo doesn't move. Then all internal memory is for app cache.

Contact storage can take up a lot of space too.

If you could list apps and their size, we may notice something.

I had this issue as well and was very frustrated. I did the ADB shell command to allow all apps to move to SD but it barely helped.

It was the main reason I recently finally took the plunge and got rooted, installed Cyanogen 6.1, and used the DarkTremor script (and moved the dalvik cache to sd). I now finally have an awesome phone that works 100% and has plenty of free space (88mb free on internal with 100 apps installed).

I know rooting isn't for everyone. It takes some time to research and understand what you're doing, but the above should be manageable by anyone with a few hours to spare and a search engine. :)

Not sure if this was for me personally but I will reply anyway.

The HTC mail app - I deleted my account from it so it wasn't storing anything and it had no effect.

Having more space doesn't resolve the issue if the memory is getting more and more full when no extra data is being stored, by me.

I listed all of my apps, and their sizes, in the thread I linked to earlier.

By hardware issue, I meant hardware limitation, and that the issue is that there's simply not enough internal memory. Having more memory would certainly fix the problem because you wouldn't have to worry as much about all the little things consuming the precious little internal memory this device has. Just imagine if you had 500 MB more of internal memory (less would be actually technically usable, but the point stands), then you wouldn't be worrying at all now would you? Clearing the cache, worrying about an app size, etc. None of that would be a problem unless you flooded your phone with useless apps. Well that's what A2SD+ offers.

Right, and as I've said from what I can tell the memory is just filling up slowly no matter what I do, so having more memory would just delay it and not fix it.

I'm sure A2SD+ would fix it but that's not something I want to do, or should need to do for that matter.

Even if it was on the Sd card it will still build up slowly, But i think the point is... bigger is better ;)

Exactly, it would take ages to fill up if you had it on the SD card. So although it is not a permanent solution, it is one that will likely last more than long enough for almost everyone.

Although, if you aren't willing to root and go A2SD+ you really are out of luck. There's nothing anyone can do for you.

I do agree, it shouldn't be this way, but there's nothing we can do about it now.

I'm still not convinced that it can't be fixed by HTC themselves.

Well think about it this way, assuming you have a PC (or Mac for that matter), the computer slowly fills up with data right? As you perform your daily operations things are cached, files are stored, applications write things to hidden system folders. This slowly, but surely consumes space. Although you can clear caches and go hunt down stray files, you're never quite capable of accounting for all the space used. However, this is not an issue on most modern computers, as, although they may slow down some, they have nice big hard drives.

The Desire also stores data here and there, and although you can clear app data and caches, it is impossible to really control every single file on your phone (without rooting and being very knowledgeable). My suspicion is that in addition to apps storing small amounts of data, the OS itself probably stores some as well. So, it makes sense that the phone would slowly but surely use up internal memory. And the big difference between the Desire and your computer is that kilobytes matter on the Desire. When you're talking storage in MBs those small insignificant little bits of data begin to add up, until eventually a few MBs of data is gone.

That's just my two cents on the issue, anyone with some in-depth knowledge feel free to chime in.

hi everyone,

yeah you guessed it keep getting low on space. I previously did a reset, and then installed all my apps back on to my SD using the non rooted method great had 70MB left but its popped up again now, i have like removed all the apps caches and its still only at 20mb.....

im thinking of doing another reset to try and get it back up again and then keep move of an eye on it:)

any other ideas where all my space has gone?

thanks
ben
