Issues resolved. Not usb bricked as I feared
Please read the original post (below) and then the summary of this thread with the eventually found solution at the bottom of this post.
Special thanks to:
Rastaman-FB and danfrance for all their help.
Fabolous (Moderator) for the thread title change.

[OP]
Searched for hours and been in live chat a number of times but can not find specific solution.

I wanted to install the HD rom so I partitioned my sdcard (successfully, to ext3 1.5gb) and started wiping via ClockworkMod recovery.
Now I can not mount my sdcard - "E:Can't mount /dev/blocl/mmcblk0 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0p1) (invalid argument) Error mounting SDCARD:!"
When I reboot, it just bootloops at black screen with blue/grey animated "android" text.
WinXP will detect my device via adb (when in recovery) but can't see the sdcard.
I had never used fastboot, so I am not sure if I am typing commands correctly.

I think this is all in my sig strip apart from the device is now S-off.
Htc Desire 2.2 GSM * Uk 3 network * 8gb class2 sdcard * Bravo pvt1 ship S-off Alpharev * Clockwork 2.5.0.7 * HBOOT 0.93.0001 *

Any help would be very much appriciated.

I hope I haven't missed an obvious or relavent thread.

Tried sdcard from Nokia6500 but Desire won't mount that either.
Will be in the chatroom and online for a few hours if anybody can help.

When I go into fastboot and plug in my usb, I do get "FASTBOOT USB" come up, so why would cmd "fastboot devices" not detect my phone? In recovery, cmd "adb devices" detects it.

cmd's tried
adb devices
List of devices attached
HT05********* recovery
adb shell
# su
su
/sbin/sh: su: not found

Thread summary
I believe I took mostly wrong turns along the way. Hopefully this will work for you first time and save you a lot of hassle.
It appears that my issues were not as serious as first thought and the actual solution was not that complicated to rectify.
If I cut the thread right down, all that was required was a reformat of the sdcard and my Windows XP laptop needed the usb drivers uninstalling/re-installing.

Solution

If your phone is stuck in a bootloop at the booting animation stage (NOT the first splash screen image), then remove the battery and the sdcard.

Place the sdcard in a sdcard reader.
If it is ok and all your files are still there, copy them to your computer and reformat it just to rule out the sdcard being one of the problems.
If it is not accessible or the files are not visible, then sorry (as far as I know) your files are lost and reformating is necessary. The only comforts you can take from this are that hopefully you had quite a recent backup on your computer and you now know you have found one of the issues.
To reformat the sdcard, you can use the recommended gparted live tool - here.

To uninstall and re-install the usb drivers for a Windows XP machine, follow post #77, it is a reply to post #76.

If none of this works for you or you have any questions, do not despair, there are lot of other great tips and suggestions in the rest of this thread.
If you still have not got your phone fully functioning after reading the whole thread then just explain your specific problem and we will try and help.

Thats a big ext partition.

I would suggest the partition isn't set up correctly. If the rom requires a partition, it won't boot.

How did you create the partition?

Best bet?

Download Gparted Live cd ISO and burn it as a bootable CD. Boot into it on PC, connect phone and in recovery, mounts SD card as USB storage.

Flatten the card and recreate the partitions.

Hiya Dan
Its this HD rom --> [ROM][New Sense][05 Dec]RCMixHD v0.14 1.32.405.6 WWE. Data2Ext or A2SD. - xda-developers
Its got data2sd, hence the need for a large partition.
It has been getting mixed reports but I just love the look of the extra features over stock sence.
I read that the Desire HD has 4gb internal memory.

I used "MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition 5.2". It was so simple.
The problem I had/have, struck when I was wiping via clockworkmod after the sd partitioning.

PS my cd drive is hammered, so cant burn or read with it. I could put it on usb I suppose.

Im nearly at a complete loss now. Made no progress since I figured out how to get fastboot to see my device nearly a day ago.
Going to try a using a card reader tomorrow to check the state of my sdcard and reformat if neccarsary.
Read a number of adb tutorials.
Can not figure out how to flash/move/push/copy anything to my internal memory.
Tried with fastboot commands. I just don't think my commands are correct.
Tried with fastboot commander. Boot images appear to be flashed correctly. System images fail everytime. Doesnt even get to try data images. Tried a number of my backup images, fresh signed unrooted zip. May have to try a very old looking radio with old stock rom.
Tried following the bricked usb thread, changed the INFOCID in the mtd0.img file in a effort to regain sdcard mount. Don't think my fastboot commands why correct again.
I thought as long as I had plenty of nandroid backups and I was carefull not to pick a rom that needed a different radio I would be ok.

you are looking to deep into this
if recovery still works then just wait till you sort out the sdcard.
use gparted and format it properly when plugged into a card reader.
alternatively try and flash an ruu.
do you not have another micro sdcard that you can flash a non a2sd/data2sd rom from?
I dont like software like you used, using a windows program to format something not standard to windows always troublesome.
its likely its messed up the partition tables and which one is primary etc

I used "MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition 5.2". It was so simple.

I have tried this tool and although in my Apps2sd+ FAQ I recommend to use it to VIEW partitions, I also recommend NOT to use it to partition. You can format a partition out with it though, but I don't recommend it.

* I have reworded that FAQ to make it clearer.

I have tested this application and I can safely say in my professional opinion as a server and desktop engineer, that it is a piece of crap. Nothing I have partitioned with it has been 100% successful.

@Dan + Rasta.
Will try gparted immediately via usb drive. (Rasta, If i was on a desktop, I probably would just get a new dvd/cd drive. This HP laptop has not been one of my better purchases.)

@Rasta
After reading Dan's comments on Mini Partition Wizard, I hope I am just looking to deep into this. Was relying on my sdcard being nicely partitioned, so lets see if gparted proves it wasn't.
The only other microSD I own is 256mb. Although I could fit a rom zip on it, I didnt want to mess that one up aswel. Its from my backup phone.
I didn't try a RUU because the ones I found had seemingly quite old radios. I was under impression that flashing the wrong newer radio with another rom later would cause total brick. Basically that was the only thing that worried me about flashing. As I read more and more, it sounds like total bricking is pretty much impossible (but what do I know?).

Anyway, I guess I am often looking in the wrong places.

Thank you so much for your replies.

I will let you know how I get on.

radios are flashed with the RUU,
flashing a none a2sd+/data2sd rom wouldnt cause an issue with the sdcard as the sdcard is only used for normal media purposes like camera etc.
my intention was just to get you a working device untill you can sort out the gparted.

basically it would have been "download teppics stock rooted rom or a non a2sd version of a custom rom"
plug in other microsd to the phone
go to recovery and mount ms-sd (or whatever its called)
copy zip to sdcard
wipe device/factory reset via recovery
apply zip
boot

Mither pot is back after quite an eventful time. Have yourself a giggle at this.

@Dan, yep, was easy to get "gparted" as a usb boot.

Only trouble was, I forgot my laptop doesn't support boot from usb :(
So, I used a virtual drive but obviously there was no usb (perhaps that can be set-up but I wasn't going to waste even more time finding out how).
Got my hands on a card reader.
Resorted to "Paragon hard disk manager" which is already installed and has been faultless. It reads all three partitions I created with the "MiniTool" and finds some files like delvik and sbin on there aswell, odd *frowns*. Tried to reformat/partition/erase data but realised files are read only.
Tried "Ultimate boot disc" on someone elses pc. Only the tiny linux swap partition shows *frowns harder* but we can atleast format it to fat32.
About to go back to "Paragon" again when we realise that, as I have pushed the adaptor into card reader, the little plastic lock switch had flicked to lock position.
Success with "Paragon", I have a fat32 sdcard :) Thought I had take things slowly and just try one partition and go for GUU rom.
Moves laptop to go get phone and snaps the card reader in half OMG Why did I not copy a zip to sd before I moved? *shakes head*
So, now the phone can mount the sd without error but still my laptop can not see an external memory through usb to phone connection.
"Adb" and "fastboot" can see my phone so I guess all my drivers are ok.
Just put sd in a dongle and copied teppics stock rom to it.
Booted into recovery and the install from zip appears to have gone smoothly.
*crosses fingers* for reboot
EDIT
bootloop at white htc animation *frown*
I guess I pull the battery, remove sd card (precausion), boot to recovery, wipe. pull battery. insert sd, reboot to recovery, install zip from sd, reboot.
OH, one thing to add, when using the dongle, noticed that there was files on sd again.

I am exactly in the same situation...

Mine was running RCMixHD v0.12 before with NO ISSUE AT ALL. Yesterday I tried to flash the v0.14b data2ext, got tons of FCs after 2nd reboot. So I deciced to restore my nandroid backup. Nandroid looks like restored but stuck in bootloop. Not sure where went wrong. Booted into recovery (Amon RA) and now SD card can't mount... :(

Will try to format and re-partition my SD again with Gparted when I am home.

I hope you have a less painful experience than me.
Let us know how you get on.

PS, I would recommend copying a rom zip to the sd after formating/repartitioning.
Then wipe phone without sd inserted before inserting and installing zip from recovery.
No idea if this is such a good idea or neccarsary (because I am still a noob after all) but it is what I am going to do in future .

Thanks for your advice. Hopefully I can get it fixed.

Edit: No luck... I use card reader to format & repartition my SD. Copy ROM and some files back to SD card. Booted into recovery.

E:\Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (no such file & directory)
E:\Can't mount /sdcard

Do I have to put SD card in phone and run Gparted to repartition it? (Can't do this with card reader?)

@rx93
I wasn't able to use gparted but I would have thought a computer would treat a sdcard in a reader the same way as it would if the sdcard was in the device. I assume it would just see it as a removable storage.
When you say "I use card reader to format & repartition my SD", I take it that you used gparted?

Continuing issue:
After hboot, I still get some wrong image errors but they obviously disappear before I can read them properly.

Used fastboot command to flash amonRa - succesfull
Used amonRA to format sdcard - succesfull (see signature strip)
Used adb commands to push files to zip - succesfull

Puzzling/worrying/confusing issues when phone connected to laptop via usb:
AmonRA usb-ms toggle doesn't appear to work. mass storage not visible on laptop .
Paragon hard disk manager can not see mass storage.

Do I dare try a new rom with these problems?

Hi LfcFan,

Yes I used Gparted to format & repartition my SD cards. I tried 3 different cards. No matter what I did, my phone can't mount SD...

I even tried to put teppic ROM in a FAT32 SD WITHOUT any partition. Still can't mount it. :( Worst thing is my PC doesn't recognize my phone anymore. I think USB brick too.

Seems like I have a totally bricked phone now. Checking where to send to HTC for repair in Canada. :(:(:(

RX93, I know it seems bleek but try not to panic (easy for me to say, I know). I have seen a threads about being bricked and it appears there can be some light at the end of tunnel.

Give us some more info.
Can you get to hboot/fastboot?
GSM?
Do you have android-sdk on your pc?
Probably the key thing here is knowing how to use fastboot commands.

Hi danfrance & LfcFan,

Yes, I can still hboot (volume down+power button). I just connected my phone to PC with power on, it said Qualcomm CDMA Technology MSM device(??? Mine should be GSM Desire bravo) & installing the drivers. It's a black background with grey blue "android" in the middle. Never seen this screen before. Drivers installed and it said:
Qualcomm HS-USB Diagnostics 9002 (com3) ready to use
Qualcomm HS-USB NMEA 9002 (com4) ready to use
Qualcomm HS-USB Modem 9002 ready to use.

And then it stays on the black screen with grey blue "android". Will wait for half an hour then pull out the battery if nothing happens. Phone is not charging currently.

That's all info for now. Thanks.
