Desire HD or the Nexus S

Hi All,

I am due an upgrade next week and was going to get the Desire HD. I currently have the Hero. The release of the Nexus S today has muddied the waters slightly though.

So I thought I would ask some guys who have the Desire HD.

I like a big screen so the HD wins there. I like sense as well so again the HD wins. The nexus S having no Sd card with 16gb storage is not a problem as thats enough for me.

Am I missing anything, which one would you get?

Unless getting 2.3 a little bit earlier (probably not too long) is a deciding factor to you I'd stick with the DHD idea.

I don't use sense my self but its a thrill to use, and the DHD really is a delight to handle.

I hope you enjoy your phone which ever decision you make.

Samsung Galaxy S is a good contender, it has better specs or same as the Nexus S.

Battery life on the Desire HD sucks, if you use it for anything other than a phone, you will find it extremely difficult to go through the day on one charge.

I'd choose Nexus S as it's newer and I think it has a better GPU and a better battery.

You know how long the battery on a nexus s lasts? Hmm, some how i dont believe you.

Don't listen to this iSlave, the battery life isn't as bad as he tries to make out aslong as you control it well.

Meh. Im happy with the battery on the dhd, about 28 hours if need be, but I obviously charge it at nights, I'm actually getting really ticked off with all this commotion about the battery....its not that bloody bad.

Not quite true, i read on engadget the RRP of the nexus S might come up to over 540 pounds sim free, while i got my DHD for only 460 pounds.

Yeap battery life is good as a phone, just when you start using it as a gaming/computing device the battery struggles. It's perfectly tolerable.

That's weird, because I read just now that BestBuy say the nexus s will cost $529 (334 pounds)- I looked up on google "nexus s price"- while to get the DHD here in Canada I'll have to pay around 780$ (493 pounds)....

don't you guys think that being free of all 3rd party software is a HUGE advantage to the Nexus S over the DHD?

Galaxy S has no camera flash whereas Nexus S has it. Galaxy S unlocked - 500 GBP & Nexus S unlocked is 550 GBP.

i was considering changing my DHD for the Nexus S, but the UK prices of the Nexus S are ridiculous.

Nexus S has SAMOLED screen, gyroscope. DHD doesn't. The battery life is terrible on the DHD. People who say it isn't are the equivalent of an Apple fanboy but for
Android. Why do you think there are so many battery threads?!

Why I'd get Nexus S?
Updates straight from Google. No waiting or thinking if you'll ever get the latest Android.
SAMOLED screen
The battery is of a higher capacity.
Maybe a louder speaker?

people still go on about the battery levels! are you expecting a weeks worth of juice?! it aint the 8210 lol its a smart phone! when you turn off all the syncs, reduce the display to less than the power of the sun, get rid of the live wallpapers and turn on usb debugging the battery life is fine. mine lasts two days with youtube, games, iplayer, connectbot and the internet etc. my htc magic didn't last that long and i used that a lot less! its a smart phone that gets used more than the average PC these days so what do you expect? anyway rant over, in terms of spec the DHD is an awesome piece of kit - the nexus s does come with gingerbread and like everyone else on this site I eagerly await the release of this update. most other forums reckon it will be release OTA end of Dec start of Jan. not than long really. i've had the DHD for 3 months now and have been so impressed by it. only downside was the lag i started to notice after a few weeks - caused by the init process - but this has been solved by turning on usb debugging. that subsequently increased my battery life as well. granted the battery is bigger on the nexus but to be honest unless you leave the phone on standby in a locked safe it aint going to last more than 2-3 days.

either phone you get is sure to put a smile on your face but for looks and performance i'd go for DHD

I've just found out the Nexus S doesnt have 720p video recording. Its only 720x480 (aka 480p).

I'm keeping the Desire HD

P.S. rhod - The battery is utterly terrible. You say an 8210 can get a week long battery, but based on all the features you've turned off, you should have just got the 8210. All the same features, but a longer life battery

Are you serious? Exactly what features am I missing out on?!?!

The only big changes i have made is the constant syncing. Weather, news, mail, facebook etc.

I have my gmail account set to push.

I check facebook manually on the mobile site rather than syncing once every 5 blimmin seconds (plus the app is sh*te!)

The weather is set to update once a day - any more often seems ridiculous due to the office here having windows!!

My sky news app is 10x better than stock and that refreshes every 3 hours.

The way i'm running things suits me down to a T.

Surely you cant argue that i'm missing out? If so, please enlighten me....

Also the music quality on the DHD through the headphones is the best ive heard on any phone. It is truly amazing especially on the SRS setting.

Rhod - I didn't realise thats all you've done. I've had to turn the screen brightness right down, turn off wireless/gps/bluetooth, set syncing to less than I like and most recently turning off 3g. This gives me about 36 hours on a good day.

I have contemplated returning the DHD because it was becoming an 8210, but since getting and creating lots of Tasker Profiles, all of these services turn back on again automatically when needed (screen brightness when Gallery is opened/GPS and 3g when Maps is started/Wireless when at home/etc.), so I'm mildly happy, but I can't imagine the majority of people have the time to do all of this.

I think the days of phones lasting for days before requiring a recharge are long gone with the arrival of smartphones. And smartphones are getting ever smarter, we run our lives with them now. My hero which I am updating next week, hence this thread is diabolical. Luckily I work on a computer so it is plugged in constantly on the usb. If not I would expect to invest in a second battery to swap half way through the day. The nexus having a slightly better battery does not mean much to me. So looks like the desire hd it will be.
