Copying contacts to my computer

Yes I can copy my contacts from my SIM to phone and vice versa but it makes more sense to be able to copy my contacts from my phone to a small file on my laptop, so, if I did lose either my phone or accidentally delete from my phone I would still have all my details on my HD of the laptop

When I connect my phone to my laptop why is there not a file with my contacts in it? Like there is for my photographs?

You can back them up to your SD card, and then back that up on your PC. I just sync them to my Gmail account so if I ever have to reset the phone they're dragged back again once my Gmail account is setup again on the Desire
Many thanks.

So I copy to the Sd card then physically take the card out of the phone and slip it into my laptop and copy that. Ill do that but wouldnt it be logical to have the SD file available when you connect the phone to the laptop, like my photos?

The app stores your contacts on PC. And writes the contacts back to phone.
But you have to use the app always as interface between your phone and your PC.

personally i just use google contacts and synch it
i can export my contacts to csv or pst via googlemail as a backup which i can use on thunderbird or outlook
I go to accounts and sync ans see MyPhonebook, but that one wont sync, the circle opposite is grey, the others that do sync are green. i click on it but dont get the option to tick the sync contacts and nothing happens when I click on general settings

all my phone contacts are on gmail now, yes it took a while but they are backed up for life, if like me you bricked your phone doing a rom job, then no worries, storing contacts on the phone is a risk with loss or theft, i like the fact i have a secure password on gmail and they are backup there

what rom are you on
do you not see google there?
if i go into accounts and sync i have google. if i click on google i ave sync contacts, gmail, calendar

its NOT synching the contacts so Im back to square one. Myphoneexplorer seems to me to be the answer - if I ever get it to work. It aint simple, why not have a file with me contacts in when i connect to my laptop like I do with my photos?

Rob, additional you have to download and install the PC host of MyPhoneExplorer on your laptop. http://www.fjsoft.at/en/downloads.php
Then you operate from your laptop.

For connection your phone via USB to the laptop you have to enable "USB Degugging" on your phone.

mate im just asking you if you have a google option there? do you see one?
obviously its not synching otherwise you wouldnt be using an alternative.
im just curious to how you are able to access the market etc with no google option.

google sync is better than most other options imo as it brings consistency

i dont know what that option is not listed for you so i have to ask questions

what accounts are listed?
what rom are you using?

Yes sir I do have the google option and it does look to be syncing my calendar, contacts and Googlemail, but nothing changes, I just set a date in my google calendar and synced but it hasnt been picked up by my phone calendar :(
I can get on The Market though and maybe I have done something because a few weeks ago the calendar worked. The accounts listed are FB, Google, Myphone, Stocks, Weather and Yahoo

hmm this is odd behaviour, im wondering if somehow its lost its link or maybe its using a slightly different account?

eitherway looks like you got the myphonebook working so you have a workaround at least
