Root So if you have an Evo on 3.30 you're boned?

Just want to confirm if this is still the case? My Evo had 2.2. and was able to use an RUU to roll it back to a previous version and then root that. Is this no longer an option if I were to go to the store and pick up a phone that had 3.30 on it?

Im asking because I was going to upgrade my girlfriend to an Evo but to get the full discount I would have to upgrade my Evo and then gift my old one to her and, well, I cant go back to stock. Running Myn's and wouldnt like losing wifi tether and dealing with the bloatware again.

Not all of the phones are being shipped with 3.30. A lot are though. Can;t you give her the new one?

According to them it has to be activated on my line. Im hoping we could just swap ESNs online after the fact but I wanted a backup plan as hopefully I could root the new one. Im kind of hearing both ways, that it cant be done or that it cant be done with unrevoked (needs old-school).

there is a thread on how it is done, but i do not want to be held responsible if you brick your phone. The way to root 3.30 works but is not easy and if you have only rooted with unrevoked and never used toasts method i would not recommend.

[ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02 S-OFF - Like a Boss Edition! - Updated 11/20/10 - xda-developers

I have the newer hardware and software version and employed the above method to root. And I would consider myself a complete NOVICE to Linux and command prompts. I do, however, follow directions well and was successful in rooting my phone AND installing Myn's. I'd be willing to help you out if you want to give it a shot (I'm going to add the usual disclaimers: If you do choose to employ any of the above methods to attempt to root your phone, please be advised that it may void your warranty and that is a chance that you may permanently damage your phone and making it unusable. Therefore, this is something that you must willingly choose to do on your own and I will not be held responsible for any permanent damage that may be done to your phone).

If you get it from a store, the phone has to be on the phone number you upgraded for 31 days to get your rebate approved. If you go somewhere like best buy or radioshack (which I dont recommend because it takes away from our sales) but they dont do mail in rebates so then you could swap esn's and give her the new phone

I dont know about the phone having to be on your line for any number of days to get the rebate, so do your homework before you do, but ...... you can give your wife the new evo and keep yours, you just have to move them around on your account which can be done in the store or over the phone by reading the esn numbers, but can also be done online on sprints website. Ive done it a few times.

Yeah that was my only concern, I knew we could swap them around online (I gave her my Hero when I upgraded) but figured sprint might block me on the upgrade price if I wanted to activate it on her line (which is the secondary line and doesnt get the "we love you" early upgrade like mine).

Thanks guys for the bump on the link. I actually did the "rageagainstthecage" method originally when I rooted my Evo. I have no idea what I did but I followed the instructions to the letter and it worked fine. I may go ahead and pull the trigger and upgrade my phone, even if I cant put it on her line. Just sucks I have to go through all of the customization again (she just wants stock).

Hopefully its not 3.30. But if it is, youll be able to root it easily soon.

And worst case scenario, you could take the new phone, and keep it for a while then take it home and swap them around. Ive seen a few people selling brand new phones that they got for their upgrade, without even activating them. So i dont know how that worked.
You could find to most easy going sprint sales rep when you go to the store and ask him how to do it

Listen peeps, let me give everyone a little clarity on this. And don't friggin argue with me afterwards, cause.... You're Wrong. Period. Don't care what you want to say. You're wrong. ;)

Anyway, you can buy the new one on your line with the upgrade. Tell them NOT to activate (this is your option, they can't force you). Then go home, activate it on her line. Rebate only says it has to be active on an ACCOUNT for at least 30 or 60 days, it's on the account, not the line.

Another tip, you want annual upgrades on BOTH of your TWO family share lines? Do this:

After your primary line gets an upgrade, switch the other line to primary. This defaults the system and the secondary line will set as eligible for an annual upgrade. Then, let the 12 months run, get the upgrade, switch the lines back to as they were, BAM your original primary line is eligible.

This works at least twice. A little tip if you ever get hung up, switch the primary line to seasonal line for 1-2 days. That is... if they ever give you a hard time.

how did you upgrade to an evo from a hero and already be up for an upgrade?

I hated my Hero that much. Girlfriend doesnt seem to mind it but I would like to get something with a front camera so we can chat on it. She wanted to hold out for something smaller that would fit in chick jeans but there doesnt appear to be anything on the horizon.

Actually the rumored release for the htc shift 4g is january, and it is going to be 3 and some inches. Slightly smaller. So yes there it's a smaller device coming soon...
