Google and Samsung today officially announced the Nexus S. The Nexus S will become the next officially-sanctioned developer platform for Android coders. It is based on Samsung's Galaxy S line of Android devices, and is the first to run Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The Nexus S has a four-inch Super AMOLED "Contour Display" that Samsung says has a more ergonomic feel in the hand. Other features include a 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor; 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, 720p HD video capture, and user-facing VGA camera; 16GB of built-in storage; GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR radios; and a gyroscope, accelerometer and digital compass. The Nexus S is the first Android device to launch with built-in near-field communications, which will allow it to make contactless payments are properly equipped retail locations. Samsung and Google called Android 2.3 Gingerbread the fastest version of Android yet, and note that it now includes a redesigned user interface, an improved keyboard that supports multi-touch gestures, and VoIP-based internet calling. The Nexus S will be available unlocked in Best Buy stores starting December 16. The first variant available supports quad-band GSM/EDGE and 900/1700/2100MHz HSDPA at 7.2Mbps. It is compatible with T-Mobile's 3G network. It will cost $529 unlocked or $199 with a new T-Mobile contract.

That is a Galaxy S phone. I t just has stock Android on it and they call it the Nexus S which will be the new guineapig phone for the new OS.

Not likely, or at least anytime soon. People tried making ROM's for the Vibrant with the I9000 code and the results were not particularly good, most notably a completely useless GPS. It takes a lot of coding to port a firmware made for a different phone. Until there's a leaked Gingerbread for the Galaxy S line don't expect much.

I have no doubt it will be tried and there will be some success, but for now I'm perfectly content with the custom Froyo ROM's available. They're pretty darn nice!

I agree that Samsung has really blown it to hell with updating the Vibrant and other Galaxy S phones. Great hardware, bad support. I'd hesitate to get another Samsung.

I was surprised to see how similar the Nexus S is to the Vibrant. I expected more really. The only thing the Nexus S will have going for it is that it will be a "developer's platform."

The Nexus 1, almost a year old, has gotten every vanilla software update released, and will in all likelihood receive Ice Cream(Making an assumption here in accordance with my signature) before it becomes truly obsolete.

While I cannot in any way get myself to be excited for the Nexus 2, I really want to believe that Google has a lot of say in how this phone and it's future updates will be handled. I sincerely hope that Google won't allow Samsung to screw the pooch on this one.

HTC is superior to Samsung in so many ways, and I have to question, why on earth is Samsung aloud to manufacture an industry leading development phone? Best of luck to them, but as soon as HTC drops the dual core Android hotness, I'm bailing on the Vibrant and Samsung for good. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice.....

Oh man that's bs. I switched my nexus one for a vibrant and sometimes I regret to have done it. Id sell my vibrant and buy the nexus s but things like the lack of an sd slot, gorilla glass make me skeptic.

It is because it IS a vibrant. Samsung realized they messed up big time on the vibrant and they cant fix it, so they made another phone. Putting in the features and fixing problems that the vibrant had. ie front facing camera and 2.3. How much do you wanna bet that the GPS actually works?

I think I'm gonna pass on the Nexus S because we all know that in a few months there will be something way better anyway. I do like to have the most up-to-date phones on the market, but T-Mobile really doesnt have anything that great at the moment. I figure that mid-winter or spring will bring some more cool phones (not made by Samsung) that I can pick up and then scrap the Vibrant.
