How quickly things change

A year ago this Eris forum was abuzz with non-stop chatter speculating about when Android 2.1 would arrive on the Eris and how wonderful life would be if only our little cupcakes had 2.1. Even the most trivial piece of news about the OTA upgrade would spawn scores of comments. Eris fans couldn't sleep because they knew 2.1 was somewhere in the future... BUT WHEN! Come on Verizon WHEN! Then an early version of 2.1 was leaked and everybody went nuts. Posts would come in fast and furious and within an hour or two fill many pages. Yes, these were heady times.

Fast forward a mere three hundred and sixty-five days and the Eris is a relic. It's well past its prime. It will receive no more firmware updates and there are dozens of devices that are better in nearly every respect, some better in every respect. The A-Squad of forum posters have all moved on to greener pastures. Of-the-Damned, Caddyman, Frisco, etc. have all found new interests. The Eris forum is quickly turning into a ghost town. A place about as exciting as the Packard Plant in Detroit Michigan. Everybody remaining is just treading water until their Verizon contracts are up.

How quickly we turn on our friends. Yes, the Eris is still a decent handset and it works for me but honestly, I long for the excitement of the olden days of yester... well, make it... last year.

Well, actually it was 2.0, not 2.1 - that didn't start until January - but, otherwise, you're right.

As time has passed I've come to realize that I made a mistake getting the Eris rather than the Droid. I've been able to get about as much from this thing as I possibly could, but it's obvious now that the Droid at least has a chance to be a relevant phone 20 months later (i.e., the new every two upgrade wait time).

Sure, it'd be neat to have a phone with more horsepower, or a higher res screen, but neither of those things would actually change what I do with the phone, or enable me to do something that I can't do today.

I for one am closely monitoring the Gingerbread rom threads .

My big question is once I upgrade, I think in July, what phone will I get then and how fast will I root that one and with which rom.

I've also noticed this. I think we've all posted all there really is to post about the Eris at this point. Unfortunately a lot of it was about how slow the phone was or how many times a user has had to replace theirs.

The userbase for the Eris has really dwindled and i expect that to continue at a pretty steady pace

I've debated on getting the Droid but i think i'll wait for now. I've been monitoring the XDA forums more lately mainly for xtrROM updates and tweaks and the new apps that developers post.

I still wish i could get Google Earth on my Eris... but i am still overall happy with it, especially after rooting and loading xtrROM.

I agree for the most part. The Eris still does an amazing number of cool things but there are many more devices that do the same cool things even faster.

My post was really just about how quickly things change in the world of technology and how easily we abandon our loyalty to certain brands. The Eris was a great and exciting little device for a few months but the world moves on.

I keep reading about a possible Incredible HD coming early in 2011. Sounds like it may have an amoled screen and 4g. If I were buying in early 2011 that might be the way to go but late in 2011, who-the-heck knows.

I still love my Eris. I've rooted it, and since then, it doesn't seem like I need a new phone because the root roms I can install make it faster and work better. But I agree, I wonder what phone will be out in the future? I'm hoping they create a Sense 3.0 phone for Verizon. The quicker start times and improved interface will really make the phone enjoyable, especially because I love the look of Sense.

Or a Sense 3.0 rom for the Eris...too ad they aren't close to being stable yet...

I was very happy with my Rooted eris.... Until my Job gave me a Moto Droid Pro for two weeks for testing.

I have had my eris since may and love it, since my upgrade isnt till may, I have some time before I get a new phone, but all the better in my opinion since I can see what new phones are out and how people like them etc and then I can update.

Eris with KaosFroyo V38 is a charm right now, only gripe is no flash..but I have a Galaxy Tab for that

I'm pretty glad I chose the eris. I saved 150$, and if I'd gotten a DInc I wouldn't be so motivated to upgrade, However now I'm in prime position to snag a tegra 2 device soon. I'm glad I didn't jump ship for the galaxy S...

honestly the only time I feel my phone is "slow" is while trying to do things with pandora running.

Frankly as these phones are small comuters they have one big negative associated with computers, upgrading to a new phone (or Computer) is a real PIA. I'd like to have a new Droid X or like Ted S awaiting the new Incredible HD. But the Eris does everything I want (well almost) and I have the UI set to my liking, plus I can get 1-2 days on a charge, and the tethering, makes it invaluable. For now I'm sticking w/ my trusty Eris. I may be pursuaded to go through the upgrade process when the new batch of 4G phones arrive in the 1st Qtr of next year, but for now Viva la Eris.

It's awesome except for a few things

- As im using the keyboard, I sometimes hit the soft keys above the keyboard and cancels out whatever im typing. Its very annoying

- The Corporate sync is broken. It does not receive Push Email from Exchange properly. Sometimes gets pushed hours later. (This is a known issue and Moto is working on a fix).

- Same size screen and (resolution?) of the Eris. Not a fancy screen at all, but gets the job done.

It might be worth paying for Touchdown rather than waiting out a fix from Moto?

Not my phone, its the company phone so I don't really care lol.

I'm just testing it to see if it will make a good alternative to the blackberry. So far I say no.

That is my biggest complaint with moving up at this point. All of the newer phones are getting really too big for a pocket. I would love to see the Eris just get an Incredible hardware internal facelift (minus the larger LCD, of course). I just bought an Huawei S7 tablet and that works well for me, if I want a larger LCD, but I don't have to carry it with me wherever I go just to have my phone on me.

I for one fell in love with my Eris AFTER I rooted and went to XtrSense (recently upgraded from 4.2.x to the latest version). It has worked well for me and even with the silicone case, it's still small enough to carry around without feeling like I have a cinder block in my pocket. I can stand to wait and see what comes down the pike.

I have to agree with everything everyone has said....and I don't frequent the eris forum as much as I once used to, spend more time in the app forum etc. But that is the way these things always are. And I still love my Eris and will keep it for awhile longer even though I have an upgrade sitting waiting for me with Verizon. As the others have said, the Eris does everything that I need right now and still love its form and size. And I love that it was so cheap....I believe i paid $75 for it. Eventually something will come up that really catches my eye and I'll upgrade to another, better, faster phone when I can get a really good deal on it.

That was my main reason for choosing the Eris over the original droid, and why i went with an extra battery instead of buying that mega battery thats out. The Droid just looked like a big ol brick of a phone.

I bought a dock to keep at work that nicely sits my eris up and charges the second battery, plus i have a portable charger i can take when traveling.

The Eris has some age on it; but i'm running kaosfroyo 37 and am happy enough. Contract is up and I could've gotten a new phone but its a waiting game on Vz 4G devices as far as I'm concerned

Buddy had a palm pre he complained about in writing to the FCC with the GPS block; Verizon gave him a Samsung Galaxy phone. Bigger than the Eris but a nice thin form factor .. and fast

Sadly I noticed today my Eris case is cracked on the side. May have to opt for an early upgrade and don't look with favor on having to do all the homework to compare. I didn't last time and got the Eris. I won't be buying EOL hardware again unknowingly .. I hope!

I am up for renewal, and because of nonsensikal have kept the phone, I am waiting to see what comes out next year. I love the size and battery life of my Eris, nothing out there interests me a ton other then the Incredible which is already 9 months old, and the HD which isn't as old but still not exactly what I want. I was hopeful for the Nexus S, but now that the stats have been released I am unimpressed and will wait some more. I do not want a Motorola phone, and that seems to be the better hardware out there right now.

That said, the Eris may be an outdated phone, but it is still loved somewhere.., it was the first to get a Gingerbread rom, even if it is very early stages.

Seems to me that the original issue with speed has been all but solved with rooting and that was the main thing wrong.

I find the Eris barely fast enough rooted, but the big thing is that the radio is rather mediocre and battery life is poor to the point that it limits what I do with the phone. I tend to pull out my iPod Touch when I am in areas that have WiFi to do light browsing, and I have background notifications set to higher intervals than I would prefer to use. It's not a terribly huge deal, but there is nothing that rooting can do to improve the radio, and battery life, though improved, is still limiting.

I'm fine with the Eris as I have it rooted, but I do want better. I should have known that buying low-end for a two year contract would be ultimately frustrating.

I love my rooted eris. Ever since I upgraded my browser to Opera Mobile, I have loved using the internet once again. The phone still have some holdups to it, but like, others there are so many different phones on my the market now that I dont know what to pick from...
