Accessories car charger for Evo?

I would advise that you order this charger. When I bought my evos, the sprint person tried to sell me this exact charger, and it was $40.00. I looked and found the same charger for $9.00. This charger can plug into a cigarette adapter, or a wall outlet, and you can use it to charge two phones at the same time. This is the absolute best charger I have ever seen.

My fav is the rocketfish usb cigarette lighter at best buy (im sure there is a cheaper alt online). I love it because its an amp so it charges quickly and can keep up with a phone that is multi-tasking and 99% of it fits wholly inside the cigarette lighter, meaning if you have one that is in an ashtray then you can close the door on it. Then you just hook up a micro USB when you get in the car but can re-use that usb on your laptop or the excellent HTC wall USB adapter.

Rocketfish™ USB Vehicle Power Adapter - Black : Rocketfish

Now what I want to know is when you plug this charger into an Evo and goto Menu > Settings > About phone > Battery does Battery status say Charging (USB) or Charging (AC)? Please note that the phone needs to be charging and the LED needs to be yellow instead of green to see the charging status.

Pete

Yeah I couldnt fetch the link because I was posting from the Evo and too lazy to deal with best buys site.

I can check tomorrow if I remember, Im on the road now and have that adapter plugged into the rental. What is the difference? I know the phone doesnt "think" its plugged into a USB as it doesnt give me the USB option like it does when I connect to the USB port on the car itself.

So when I am plugged into the rocketfish thing it says charging(usb) whereas when I am plugged into the HTC wall plug its charging(ac). Is that indicative of the charger not outputting as much power or is it a trigger to the phone for some reason?
From a post of mine in XDA-developers:

AC? USB? WTF??:
USB ports were originally designed for data communications with and to supply power to computer peripherals. The maximum power specification for the USB 1.x and 2.0 data devices is 500mA so a "typical" USB port in most computers and hubs is only designed to supply 500mA. But consumer electronics manufacturers have adoped the USB connector as a means to charge their devices and they didn't want to be limited to 500mA, so some changes to the USB Standard were necessary to prevent "typical" 500mA USB ports from being damaged when subjected to loads which exceed their maximum output.

In a nutshell, now modern consumer electronics devices test the status of the USB data pair (D+ & D-) when you plug a cable into them. If the data pair is shorted (less than 200 ohms) then it will assume that the cable is connected to a charger and draw as much current as the charging circuit in the device calls for. If the data pair is not shorted then the device will assume that it's connected to a data port and it will draw no more than 500mA. Unfortunately, it seems that most auto charger manufacturers (and some AC chargers) just don't get it and they're selling high-powered (1 - 1.25A typical) chargers without the data pair shorted. Consequently a device like the Evo thinks it's connected to a data port and won't even try to draw more than 500mA regardless of what the charger is capable of supplying.

You can CLICK HERE to read the entire post if you'd like. It even includes some information on how to modify a charger to work in AC mode.

Interesting thanks. Now the question is if I am brave enough to modify it.

Edit: wait. That was connected to the car charger directly. I know the car mount uses the data pins thing to trigger car mode. Does that mean if i plug it into the car mount and then into the charger it might trick it into thinking its a full wall charger?

Yes. I did it just last week. And with just one odd day that I only got 12mA for some reason, its been working great. I usually get 720mA with my PowerBolt Micro.
