Root Fast, stable roms

For Froyo, I've had the best luck with CELB Froyo. Nonsensikal Vanilla worked great for me, though the last version I ran was 7.0, and it ran great for me. Just read the instructions for CELB carefully - you have to download a Google apps package .zip file and flash that right after you flash CELB and before you restart the phone.

ya ive been on 12. 5 black and bluebut it getting a bit laggy so i might go back to 2.1
You need to turn off jit, that makes a huge difference, then turn off animations, and then hit menu preferences, advanced settings speed up minimum scrolling speed, make it 100, then scroll down and change the opening speed to 10 and the other opening speed to 10. reboot and enjoy:D
thats for nonsensikal rom, or any one you want a little better.

is there any 2.1 roms with cyanogen mod?

There is one really good one that I know of. Conap's Eris Lightning Bolt 2.8: [ROM]ErisLightningBolt 2.8 CM5.08 build( OC, JIT, Apps2sd, GPS, Stock MMS!!!)6/21/10 - xda-developers

While it's not CyanogenMod, Vanilla 2.0.4 is pure AOSP (Android Open Source Project) 2.1. [ROM] [GPL] [10-11-10] Vanilla 2.0.4 [Pure AOSP 2.1, OC, A2SD, CFS, Cache2Cache] FAST - xda-developers

I'm not aware of any that have the most recent CM (6.0 or 6.1). I think most of the 2.1 ROMs only go up to CM 5.x, and I'm thinking it probably has something to do with how CM is written. It might be written for 2.2 framework and probably doesn't integrate well or easily to 2.1 anymore.

I'll keep my eye out for one though.

If I'm not mistaken, CyanogenMod version 5.x is from Android 2.1 source, CyanogenMod 6.x is from Android 2.2 (Froyo) source.

1) basically the same way you flashed Kaos. Find the ROM you want to try, download it, make sure it's on the root level of your SD card, wipe data and dalvik, flash the new ROM.
2) There will always be some setup when you flash a new ROM, I don't think there's any getting out of that (besides, it's a good way to learn about what the new ROM can do). However you can make it somewhat less painful. Download Titanium Backup from the market, I'd recommend spending the few bucks and getting the paid verison - it's worth it for how much easier it makes the process.

'google' contacts should automatically backup and restore.
I don't recommend restoring email, bookmarks or any other 'system' information when crossing the line between 2.1 and 2.2 ROMs. The system data is different enough that it's likely to cause a problem. If you go to another 2.2 ROM and elect to have Google back up your apps then it should automatically download all the market apps you had before - this will take some time, give it at least 30 minutes to finish. You can go to 'downloads' in the market to see the progress.
Or you can use Titanium to restore all of your apps and their data (to do this you will, natually, have had to used it to backup everything before you flashed the new ROM).

Generally speaking, it's a good practice to make a nand backup before you flash a new ROM. That way should something go wrong with the flash you have a known good setup you can go back to.
