Same here...lots of conflicting info on this. I'm waiting to be able to pull the update to I can test.
I tried last night, it downloaded, but failed to install.
This was with Stock Froyo, with NexTheme (deOdexed). Tried it 3x.
This morning, I could no longer pull the update (on their end not our's).
So now I wait to see if Black Glass will work, or BG back to stock, or my nandroid with absolutely no themes or roms.
If all that fails, I guess it's SBF for me. (conflicting info about SBF and losing everything too)
This update could be different but the last update allowed you to update if you were rooted and deodexed but it would ad the odex files back so after the update you had to deodex your phone again, but no need to re-odex your phone for the update
Well, if you're rooted and deOdexed, can't you just make a backup ROM with Koush's Bootstrapper, SBF to new update (if needed), re-root, re-deOdex, then just restore your ROM via Koush's Bootstrapper?

No need to make a backup before you upgrade, it will put you in boot loop if you use old backups. personally its not hard to sbf, OTA update, root and deodex especially with the on click root tools and being able to flash a deodexed theme or Rom, it wasn't all that bad when we had to do that stuff manually. I don't get why anyone who has already been though these processes are making a big deal about.
I was deodexed, themed swype, changed verizon wireless text, and a few other changes. The update failed for me. I SBF'ed then factory reset and the update went through just fine. I used Z4Root to then root. The downside was that none of my apps restored aside from my purchased apps. Luckily, i have a good memory and was able to recall most of them. Anyways, that was my experience.

Install Titanium backup, make a backup and you can restore apps and their settings. I like appbrain to keep track of what I have installed as well. Install appbrain from Market and login at appbrain.com to track and backup your apps.
I'm guessing you mean a backup with titanium backup? if so then yes you can just restore that. If you mean you made a Nandroid backup, then no you can not use that or you will brick your phone.
I suppose it doesn't matter since the update doesn't wipe anything that I know of. Just have to re-root and create a new nandroid asap.
Although, it would come in handy if the re-rooting process became effed and you had to sbf, then that data would be nice to have. Because you do lose everything but the SD card data when you sbf, right?

I love Titanium Backup, it's so easy to restore everything without very little effort.
If you don't want to pay for Titanium Backup, then use AppBrain as colchiro said before wiping everything (if your apps aren't on the market anymore, you won't be able to restore them, that's why I prefer Titanium Backup).
You don't have to worry about your purchased apps since they are linked to your Google email anyway.
Rooted
Deodexed - with 928's theme
Removed all Bloatware
Stock OTA Froyo ROM
Here's what I did to get 340:
Re-odexed by using 928's "back to stock" package
(Re-odex restored all the bloatware)
Ran update.zip provided by phandroid
No SBF crap needed, this worked fine and I didn't lose all of my stuff. Now question is, can I use 928's same deodexer package for 340? Does anyone know?

i just tried this and it still didn't work. i too was rooted with 928's theme. now i'm back to my stock rooted. I just restored to my backup i made after i rooted before i themed...everything i've tried has failed,
no ota (obviously since they pulled it)
using update.zip alone didn't work
flashing 928's back to stock odexed , then trying update.zip failed
restoring to my stock 2.2 rooted backup and then trying update.zip failed.
every time i have tried the update.zip it aborts the installation. The only thing i haven't tried is sbf'ing to 2.2 , factory reset, then try the update.zip. I have backups of my apps using titanium pro but honestly i don't need 2.2.1 that bad. So i guess i'm just going to wait till they put it back live and try it ota.
