Hi,
I just got my phone a couple of days ago and I've noticed that when I want to add shortcuts to my home screen the phone will lag/stall for at least 30seconds before anything pops-up especially when I want to choose shortcuts from the Applications or Activities list. Will rooting my phone help? Any suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

yeah if you root and put on a better kernel that lag can be down to zero, thats one thing we always test is the always imfamous dock shortcut change application menu pop up time thing

I'm rooted and using dj05, haven't played with any kernels or custom roms, can i use my current setup and just modify the kernel? it is a real pain how it lags sometimes.

Try the newest Stupidfast in ROM Manager, it is a non-destructive install, that is to say, kernel only.

Yeah bezerk19 almost any kernel put out in December is going to probably eliminate and will surely reduce this lag. Voodoo is arguably better but even the nonvoodoo/geeknik stuff is often times indiscernible from voodoo

Well i tried the stupid fast kernel in Rom manager, it looks like it did install something but the phone still has the issue, i can't even complete a Quadrant test in a timely manner, looks like when it finally completes its slower than before, i'm at about 817, where before i was at 910 or so.

Any idea whats going on?

I'm assuming the kernels in Rom manager are up to date?

I downloaded StupidFast Test v1.95 i believe (this was on Saturday) looking at it now it says 1.96, not sure if maybe i did have 1.96, anyway i didn't notice any improvement so i went with 1.54 and i still don't see any improvement, am I doing something wrong?

No and speaking as geeknik's beta tester I can tell you frankly with 1.54 we kinda hit the performance wall with eclair 2.1. Geeknik is dedicated to trying various experimental tweaks and what not but in the eyeball test there is a minimal actual real world progress. Im not saying not to use the latest test, but just know there is minimal gains anymore these days. Also dont put all your eggs in the quadrant basket use the eyeball test. Having said that if the latest kernel does not pass your eyeball test go back to something which does

So is testing them as easy as running them off ROM Manager? Say i try the latest one and I still notice lag, can i easily load ROM Manager and try another one without running into issues?

Yeah you can certainly switch kernels that way. Its very quick and easy and if your new one is not as good as the old just go back it it with another flash.
Anything any of the guys put out has usually been tested by multiple guys on a few different SF's. So usually they are all good to go
