Root MetroPCS..hello..hello...goodbye

http://androidforums.com/lg-optimus-m/227036-new-lg-optimus-m-ms690-root-achieved.html

its the first post.

Basically go to Android Market... download and install z4root by RyanZA(not the chinese one)

run it and root your phone(I perm. rooted mine).

Once rooted buy Root Explorer(you can find if elsewhere if you are smart for free).

Run Root Explorer, make sure you "allow" it superuser permissions.

Press Mount R/W button at the top

Navigate to /system/sounds/poweron/PowerOn.mp3, press and hold the file then rename it to PowerO.mp3 or something else.

Exit, reboot to test.

So I replaced mine with a Super Mario One Up sound. I just called it PowerOn.mp3 and sent it from my mac via bluetooth to my phone.

Ran Root Explorer, copied it from /sdcard/bluetooth/music to /system/sounds/poweron

I rebooted and viola....now it just sounds like a mario game.

My clip was only like 3 or 4 seconds, but I am sure you can use a longer clip cause i think the default metro one is like 8 or 9 seconds.

anyone got a droid sound clip to put in there?

I'm thinking about replacing mine with a droid sound and then see if I can put a droid boot animation instead of the metro one.

OK, so I managed to replace the default android animation with a custom one by simply downloading the custom animation, renaming it to bootanimation.zip and placing it into the /system/media directory on the phone. I didnt see any bootanimation.zip file to backup/replace so I just copied the custom one over and rebooted.

Now to replace the metroPCS boot image.

Here is the custom animation I used.

Now to find out how to replace the MetroPCS boot spalsh screen...

While using Root Explorer I noticed a folder called "bootimages" with 14 files ending with the extension .rle named "mpcs_power_on_01, mpcs_power_on_02...etc.

I believe these may be splash screen images but I'm not sure. I can find no programs that can display .rle files.

The file for the boot image is /initlogo.rle

i'm in the process of figuring out how to read these files and create my own. From what I have read so far they are BMP files with some special RLE compression.

As am I. I thought I read they were some sort of PNG file but I could be mistaken. Just gotta figure out how to convert to .RLE. I'd love to have my favorite droid of all time as my splash screen. HK-47 from the "Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic" series.

I have a question, when you replaced the sound then did it play during the metro startup sound or the droid one? because i want to put in the droid sound while the android animation comes on so how would i do this?

I have a HP laptop that came with Corel PaintShop Pro preinstalled and found it can open any image like a .JPG and save it as .RLE image. Going to save the original Optimus .RLE image to my laptop and see if I manage to edit and save it again. Will post results.

***Update***

Can't open original .RLE images from Optimus in PaintShop Pro.

I have a PowerOn.mp3 that will play R2D2 followed by droid sound right after metro logo. now how to get rid of the metro logo altogether...? if anyone wants the mp3 or can host it for me, send a message.
