Get rid of Samsung, use Pure Android?

Has anyone completely wiped the Samsung ROMs and loaded Google's version of Android?

The thought of constantly being one Android version behind most other phones irks me, plus there is always the chance Samsung will abandon support for the Galaxy S sometime after its successor model is released, e.g., Gingerbread 2.3 might be the LAST version the Galaxy S ever gets (officially).

How difficult is it to do? Once it's done, it's done? You can just upgrade to the next Android version, with minimal fiddling?

Samsung have not confirmed that they will ever release 2.3 for the Galaxy S. They released a very odd statement that seemed to suggest they may not even bother trying. Hardly a surprise to be honest.

Samsung has recently said there will be an update to 2.3. And with it already pre-installed on the (Samsung) Nexus S, it should be easy to do for the Galaxy S. I predict it will take four months from now: early April 2011 (less time than it took for 2.2).

Nexus S is Google brand.. it won't have the Bloatware and crap from Samsung on it.. (Samsung Apps.... really??????).

Samsung is royally pissing me off atm.. trying to use Kies is like scraping fingernails across a chalkboard... how could they design and sell such crappy software?

I know but since they have almost the same hardware and Samsung builds both it shouldn't be to hard to tack on their crapware, which is why I think it won't be six months like Froyo was. Plus I think 2.3 isn't as much of a leap that 2.2 was.

Honestly unless you are into the whole front facing camera video call (which I'm not), there is really nothing ground breaking with 2.3.

There's minor tweaks but nothing Froyo-like...

There are a number of apps that will use it for video calls, such as Fring. I've seen a number of these apps beginning to mature lately and expect to find even more within the next year - especially with update to the Android infrastructure that will make this sort of app development even easier than before.
