Root After rooting the phone?

Hi!
I have a HTC Droid Eris and I just rooted it. But I'm not sure what to do next. I tried opening up the superuser permission app, but the screen just goes black. I'm not sure what it is supposed to do. I want to get rid of some of the apps the phone came with, like footprints, the amazon mp3 store, and so on. I really liked this phone when I got it, but after doing the system update it has become the worst phone of all time. Can someone please help me?? Thanks!! :p

Go to the ROM thread and pick a ROM if you haven't. Usually they will have the unwanted apps uninstalled already. I personally have ben using TazzFroyo for many months now, I think it's the best out right now.

Other things to do with root (and this thread should go in the root section, they might move it) is CacheMate, Titanium backup and SetCPU if you want to overclock. If you flash the TazzFroyo ROM you will be able to really get into the settings of the phone and customize even more. Like I changed the notification bar to be all black with white lettering. Check out the Root section for more ideas.

Well, back to school for you then. :)
I suggest you read up on rooting, to that end start herehttp://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/163116-eris-rooting-guide-updated-18-november-2010-10-47-am-central-u-s.html
And make sure to get to these two threads.

To more specifically answer your question, a ROM is the operating system of your phone. When you load a new ROM you, in effect, get a new phone. Think of it as the difference between Windows XP and Windows 7 on a computer.

I actually stumbled across the first link before. I'm confused at what I'm looking at. It seems links just lead to more links.. I just want to have new ROM! Lol.

he's probably the problem. I don't speak these codes so I'm lost when I click one n it gives me more to view and choose anyone care to help or direct link to the download itself?

Please! :)

As other users have suggested, go to XDA-Developers and read the Droid Eris Threads there under Development. It was really confusing to me when I first rooted back in Sept. I didn't always understand everything I read. But the thing that helped me the most was to play with flashing ROMs and following XDA and Android Forums. Just learning the lingo and getting a feel for flashing ROMs really helped. I'm still a novice but now I'm getting more comfortable with reading, searching for threads applicable to my questions, and just playing with my phone.

There are so many wonderfully smart, talented, and helpful people here on Android Forums. They are very patient and will point you in the right direction. So definitely read the threads they link for you! :)

Good luck and have fun!! :)

see it all makes sense now lol guess its gonna have to wait. need a new usb cord..

thanks

flipakine, pardon me for interupting kpg's very helpful advice... But you should be able to do the download directly to your phone (the 73MB refers to needed available space on your /sdcard, not app memory space).

So, try doing the download directly from your phone...it'll probably go to the /sdcard/download directory. From there, we can help you move it one-level up to the /sdcard directory so you can flash it.

Let us know if you have any questions. :)

Flipakine,

There's a six month absence in this thread as to the last time you posted in it. What are you trying to do? Are you trying to flash a rom?

If we are still talking about Vanilla Tazz, you have one more file to download: the google apps .zip file. In the Vanilla Tazz thread, you can see a link in the first post: [GPL] Tazz Froyo GB v26/ Vanilla v28/ 6.2 rc1/ 1/15/11 - xda-developers

(Well, the download link is here: Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites! )

Now, you have to move those two file out of the /download folder from your SD card to the root of the SD card (in other words, one step up from the /download folder.) You can do this in a number of ways - attach your Eris to a PC and move it using the computer's file manager, or use a phone app like Astro file manager.

Lastly, you do not open these files on the phone to install them. The best method that I can show you is on this thread, starting with this linked fourth post by Erisuser1: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html#post1186824

There is one extra step that you need to do with Vanilla Tazz. After choosing the menu option "Flash zip from SD card" and flashing the Vanilla Tazz .zip file that you downloaded to the phone, you need to do that same step with the Google apps .zip file before you restart the phone.

ummm... yes? idk.. since the last time i posted i had already had on my phone superusers permissions. which from what i understand is only half way to rooting my phone. but being without a computer and also losing interest in the fact that although i get and use this phone i dont speak binary code. i am therefor lost. when i have people telling me this or that.

as of last night however i did exactly what you said and downloaded vanilla v23 (which i see is now 6 months outdated lol but non-the-less) directly to my device.

i dont understand what you mean by "one-step up" when talking about moving the file from download folder to SD root. but i was in fact able to find out how. i am now having a copy failed error message arise when i try it. any guess' on cause of this?

Maybe you don't have enough space on your sd card to copy it. Instead of copying it try moving it either by connecting it to your pc or by using Astro or a similar file manager from the market. Move it from the download folder of your sd card 1 folder back which would be the root of your sd card... the one that shows all your folders just like if you were in the C: location of your hard drive.

Turn your phone off and boot into recovery by holding volume up and the power button.

Select backup/restore option in recovery then select nand backup. This will backup your existing setup incase you have any problems and need to revert back to what works.

Once the backup is complete press volume down to go back to the main menu of recovery.

Select the option to wipe.

Select wipe data/factory reset.

Select wipe dalvik cache.

Volume down to return to main menu.

Select install update zip.

Choose the ROM zip.

Once the install is complete select install update again and flash the zip for the gapps.

Once that completes reboot phone and go through the setup process and enjoy your new phone and ROM. ;)

extract? is that the same as moving. and when looking in my directory im not seeing how to move it to sd root. i selected the default action of extract which i assume will go straight out to sd root?

No, do not extract it. That, I think, means unzipping it. That is not what you want.

If you want an example of how to do this on the phone, the Universal Root for Dummies thread, starting in the second post, shows how to do this.

Figures 1 through 6 walk you through how to do this with Estrongs File Manager. http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html#post1186811

man i wish i knew one of you guys personally haha

i thought i was following the directions in that post. starting this again.

edit:
tomorrow*

No. Like doogald said you don't want to extract it that is the same as unzipping it. If your using astro long press the file, hit menu, select edit, move then hit the ..parent directory folder, hit menu, edit, paste.

And the previous post was from memory nit copy and pasted lol. Honestly I've never read to root for dummies thread. Lol
