Let's face it, the Droid is the first real competition the iPhone has had, and currently those are the 2 best phones you can buy. The only reason I left my iPhone 3GS is because I couldn't deal with AT&T anymore since there was a phone that was comparable.

The Google phone, aka nexus one, is coming but from what I know it will not be compatible with Verizon's network.

We all know that competition fuels innovation so the next iPhone and Droid will both be better. Anyway here is what this post is about:

The first official news that Verizon IS interested in obtaining the iPhone:

Verizon Claims Network Ready for iPhone Should Apple Choose to Strike Deal - Mac Rumors

So now that there is something more than just rumors and speculation I am curious to know how many people will keep an open mind and consider an iPhone when it hits Verizon next year? And remember jailbreaking is very easy, takes about 10 minutes, and the apps are just as easy to install and use from Cydia as they are the Android Market, and with jailbreaking you have just as much if not more customizing ability than on the droid (my iPhone 3GS was far more customized than my droid). And yes I ran multiple apps on the iPhone and it was easier than on android to control what apps you kept running instead of using up all of your RAM and not realizing it.

I seriously doubt this is going to happen. I believe people are reading too much into that statement. Verizon isn't going to bend over for Apple and Apple isn't going to give up more control. Also with the blatant attacks on the iPhone in their commercials, if they really were interested in the iPhone, they have a strange way of showing it.

But lets say for the sake of argument, Verizon does get the iPhone, I'm not going to jump ship, not after playing with the Droid and Android 2.0. I'm very content with the current apps I have and I haven't even scratched the surface in terms of searching the Market. I had a 3g for a year and that was enough. I'm over the iPhone. It has gotten stale and to be honest, I never cared for Apple. I hated the hand-holding and being told what I can or can't do with my phone. Even if they come out with a super duper iPhone, I wouldn't care. I'll be riding the Android wave for a looooonnnnnng time.

Pre-adroid this would of been the best news ever. But I don't care anymore, I have my android phone and thats all I really want. My freind with Iphone just complain all the time (granted most of the complaints are service related) also, I dont want hte Iphone to possible cripple verizons network. ATT said they were ready, but now they are saying its to much to handle. Im happy how things are now.

Also had the 3GS. Jailbreaking != rooting. It changes the phone. I got the 3GS thinking that I could jailbreak it, unlike my original iPhone, where jailbreaking made it so slow that it was almost unusable.

The 3GS was definately better than the original, but it still definately boggs it down. Why would I want a slow iPhone with less apps and support than the android market (cydia?) thats not designed for multitasking or easy development?

I was admittedly impressed by Cydia, but the fact that the jailbroken part just felt like I was making sacrifices to have features the phone should have anyway, and like a quick hack (as most of the programs seemed).

I'm happy with my droid. If I wanted apple I'd buy a MBP. Sexy.

But even then I'd probably dual boot with gentoo and customize the hell outta it ).

No I won't consider an iphone.

A: the Android market is more open than the iphone market, and it's really open source.

B: The iphone being a multitasker compared to the Droid is laughable imo. If you consider the ads saying how you can use the data network while on a phonecall, that doesn't apply to a Verizon phone, iphone or not. It's something that works on AT&T's network and can't be done on CDMA.

C: I have a 2 year contract, so won't consider any phone until it's up.

D: As far as the Nexus One being a competitor over the droid... welcome to the wide world of modern technology. As soon as you buy anything, a week later something comes out to make it obsolete.

E: Finally, I have no interest in buying an Apple product.

Woah woah woah back the bus up sir. Never use "open" and any apple product in the same sentence. Ever. :)

No I won't consider an iphone.

I echo this sentiment. I have no apple products to date and don't intend on adding any to my list of gadgets.

When I read the thread title, I was afraid you might be talking about a better phone. I'm happy to see that this is not the case.
That sir is worthy of applause hahaha.

I am still wanting for an android phone with internal memory that compares with the Iphone, or even the Nokia N900. The first Iphone came out what two and a half years ago and not a single Android phone has more internal memory than that. not even close.
And then you'll do what? Fill all that space with some fat apps? hahaha. Poking fun. :)

But seriously, why did you post this here? There is a thread dedicated to the memory thing... and you posted there!

I am waiting for the Iphone or a phone just as good or better to come to Verizon but the Iphone will not becoming to Verizon until they have LTE up and running because apple doesn't want to have to make to Iphones with one CDMA and one GSM they only want to make one type. so look for a Verizon Iphone around 2011

Out of curiousity, why would an iPhone fan(atic) be signed up for a site called phan(atic)droid.com? To share teh love?

I too had an original iphone and iphone 3G. I stopped at the 3G because it became increasingly evident to me that Apple was hell bent on milking their platform, OS, and hardware for everything it was worth - quite literally. You should have heard some of the battles I got into with my brother, a senior Verizon rep over the iphone. Yes I got semi-brainwashed thinking a phone could outdo itself even with the network being the weakest link. I believed it was superior in spite of the endless internet banter that a phone is only as good as its network. I now think different. :D

I am a converted Droid owner since its release. What I noticed right away was the amazing openness of the platform when compared to Apple. I too got a sinking feeling in my stomach when I thought about how much of my experience Apple really controlled, both for better and for worse.

I have not looked back since getting my droid, but I know part of this is because we are all early adopters. Of course what we have is better than the current iPhone. Trouble is, Apple is sure to come out with a refreshed model Summer of 09' but by then I too won't care. Apple's product cycle is ultimately too slow for the changing trends in wireless, and it will be the nail in their coffin.

To seriously compete, Apple needs to let users have more control and once again use their muscle - only this time by parterning with strong and flexible carriers. To gain more market Apple would need to extend their footing into the corporate world as far as security.

It also wouldn't hurt to and take a page out of Google's book and develop more free apps for the iphone to further push the platform. Software is arguably Apple's strongest suit after all.

You'd be foolish if you believe Android is perfect, though. Like Apple, Google needs to advance in order to keep up with the competition.

For example, the Android Market is currently in 2.0 phase, while the App Store has gone through many revisions in terms of categorization and pricing. What many feared would happen with Apple fragmenting their software market on multiple devices is now happening with Android. In other words, in order to stay current with app technology and capabilities, you must always have the latest device, rendering many devices less than desirable when compared to more capable fresh handsets. Things can get ugly real fast when your phone doesn't stack up to newer models and run the same software.

My solution? Wireless needs to be more open. This will happen by continued pressure on all fronts from the FTC in the best interests of the consumer. A wireless revolution is in our midst my friends and we have front row seats as it unfolds.

Perhaps a business model similar to Netflix' would help with many of the problems in the wireless industry. People are less concerned with "owning" a device as they are with using it. Subsidizations are virtually the only US option, which supports this.

If users were allowed to pay a monthly service and always have the latest technology I think there would be much appeal. Like Netflix, you would use your device with any network - essentially the same as using any DVD player. Use the phone for as long as you'd like, and pay if the goods are returned damaged.

Open wireless. No contracts, no stipulations and no walls. The wireless device when you want it for as long as you want it. PhoneFlix.

Did you hear about operation chokehold run by apple itself? It told all AT&T iPhone users to go mad on data to mass load AT&T's network, because AT&T CEO told them to lower the data usage, and apparently Apple doesn't like that. Problems with AT&T could mean a new carrier for the iPhone

uhhhh...no.

Apple had nothing to do with it. It was from a blog and a guy who calls himself FakeSteveJobs. I would still like to see Verizon continue to allow more Android devices. It would be HUGE for Android if Verizon took it under it's wing and let itself be known as the biggest Android network...
