hi guys, not sure if you know this already but I found a way to take a screen
shot without installing any app or rooting.

on the galaxy s, simply press the home and back key simultaneously. I find it easier to do if I lightly touch both buttons first before clicking the home key. the screen shot will be saved in the gallery automatically. who says you need an app for that? ;)

not sure about other phones but on the galaxy tab, you need to press home, back and power button. please post here if it works for you in other phones or if there are other key combinations for them. cheers and enjoy!

Thanks for posting this, I stumbled on screen capture by accident and then couldn't do it again until I read your post. Not sure how useful it really is because as soon asi touch the back button it does this funny thing........ It goes back! Meaning I only get a capture of my home screen. Anyone know how to capture app screens?

Apparently I'm running Froyo 2.1, because the back/home key combination isn't working for me. But sometimes I still accidentally take a screenshot, and I'm never paying close enough attention to notice how I did it. I'm usually pressing back or home or trying to get out of an app in some way when it happens. Anyone know of a way to do it with 2.1 that I must accidentally be accomplishing sometimes?

Hold the back key and press the home key twice and you take screenshot on your SGS. I hope that helps :)

I am ALWAYS accidentally taking screen shots and I have NO idea how I'm doing it, I've followed the steps that have been provided and it still doesn't do it.

I would love to be able to take screen shots of Words W/ Friends and can't figure out how to do it. But I've accidentally done it... lol

How can I tell if I have a 2.1 or 2.2. version?

Menu -> Settings ->About Phone -> Firmware Version

Hope it helps!

There is an article I found quite useful for screen captures

Okay, I have the Galaxy S with Froyo 2.2 and I STILL cannot get a screen shot. I took one once by accident and I cannot figure out how. I've seen people say to hold the back button and then press home. That doesn't work. I see people saying to hold the back button and press home button twice. That doesn't work either.
So what does work???

Hold "Back", then press "Home" has always worked for me either Froyo 2.2 or Gingerbread 2.3.

Only problem is when the app uses "Back" as an exit shortcut, it can be tricky to do.

I have the 2.3.4 version Galaxy S smartphone and the way I got it to work is by using the same process as with the tablet:
