Rogers Dream 1.6 Update

I was very excited to get his phone, as with many others, but after reading this forum, I feel cheated into getting a device that is now out of date (and only owning it for 3 weeks

If you've only had it for 3 weeks, you can probably still take it back and exchange it. I believe you have 30 days, but I could be wrong.

Contact @RogersMary of Twitter (Mary @ Rogers (RogersMary) on Twitter)

EDIT: Hmmm... here is the "store return policy" on the web site. You might be SOL, but contact RogersMary anyway.

Return Policy

If you are not satisfied with your purchase, you may return the product as follows: (a) wireless devices within 15 days from the date of activation with less than 30 minutes of airtime used (see “Cancelling an Order ” below for further details), (b) wireless accessories within 15 days of purchase, and (c) all other products within 30 days of purchase. While all orders are checked for accuracy before leaving the warehouse, it is your responsibility to review the contents of your order when received. All returns must be sent back as described in the documentation included with your order, and cannot be returned to any of our retail locations.

Here is the HTC Wiki page for the Rogers HTC Magic: Rogers Magic - HTC

It has been edited to reflect the new news about the HTC Magic and the recent decision regarding Android 1.6.

You can see a screenshot of it here in case it gets deleted: My Photos in I Want My One-Point-Six | Facebook

If you google "rogers magic" this is the first hit in the search returns.

This is the page for the HTC Rogers Dream: Rogers Dream - HTC

It has not yet been updated. To update it, you must create an account, and then click on the Easyedit button in the top left corner.

Since these pages are editable by members, it is possible for anyone from Rogers or HTC to obscure this truthful information, so it may be necessary to check the pages from time to time to make sure they aren't covering this up.

I'm left speechless by Rogers. I really am. Before I bought my Magic I was assured that a 1.6 update would be released "soon". It's quite sad that Rogers is leaving it up to 3rd party ROMs so their customers can get the latest updates for their phones. I can't believe a company like Rogers is allowed to exist.

I have been in contact with Christina at the OotP. She was very informative. She told me that the HTC Dream and Magic will definitively not be getting the 1.6 update. They will however be releasing a few 1.5 fixes (whoop-dee-doo).

I mentioned that I was pissed (politley) and that the only way that I would be satisfied and not cancel my services was if I were to receive a replacement iPhone for the HTC Dream I have now. I told her that I purchased that phone based on the information I received from the customer service department and sales person at Rogers in Oakville. It was told to me that thhis was not possible. Apple has a very strict policy about this. I am not really sure what the hell that has to do with anything.

I was then offered another phone other that an iPhone...however this would renew my contract. I have only been in my contract for 6 months but that is not the point. I said that I don't want an extention on my contract, I simply want a replacement iPhone considering that it was the other option I was interested in besides the HTC Dream. I was given the response of, "I am sorry, but we just can't do that". Again I was offered another phone.

They simply will not replace my HTC. I said, in that case, I am going to pay the $500 early termination and be done with it. Apparently that was just fine. I am sure she did all she could except give me an iPhone. Looks like they are going to lose my business all together!

Screw you Rogers!!

Well, Rogers is calling our bluff. They don't care about us, we are a wee small minority. We'll do what's best for us. Even if we don't get what we want out of Rogers, at the very least we can do what we can to put this information all over the web so that everyone knows to avoid buying these phones from Rogers.

BTW: I stopped by the Telus store today at Oakville Place and asked about the coming Motorola Milestone. The gentleman said he couldn't say anything about it until it was officially released by Telus. At least he didn't give me any BS about the phone. ;-)

So Rogers is supposed to launch a Motorola Android phone next year. See the story here. If you follow the link in the story "Android handsets" You will see what the rumored OS's the new phones that Motorola is producing are supposed to have. We know that Rogers will not be getting the Milestone/Droid because that will be a Tellus exclusive in Canada.

So I'm now wondering if Rogers Android users will ever see anything above 1.5, even in new devices.

LMAO. That is GOLD

It is so accurate it is scary. I just can't understand how a company like this continues to exist!. The government is sleeping as usual. EVERYONE that I know that uses Rogers has a horror story to tell. It's not just their wireless service either (although they seem to be the worst). Unbelievable.

I added my review to the Rogers web page for the HTC Magic. I'm not holding my breath that they'll actually posy it, of course. ;-)

"The HTC Magic is a beautiful, slick phone. It fits perfectly in the palm of your hand, looks sexy, feels sexy, and is sure to impress. Call quality is great, and it is just amazing to have what really amounts to a little computer with you all the time with the usefulness of Google's Android operating system, and applications from the Android Market Place.

Unfortunately the Rogers Magic only comes with version 1.5 of the operating system (think of the phone as being like a little computer, like your PC with Windows Vista on it) which is now out of date. Google released version 1.6 back at the beginning of October, and version 2.0 is coming out now on phones around the world, just not in Canada. Rogers claims HTC won't be releasing an update to 1.6 for this phone, which means users won't be able to get the added functionality of the updated operating system. In fact, there are now applications (little programs for the phone, just like on an iPhone) in the Android Market Place that won't work on this phone because they require version 1.6.

As amazing as this phone is, you should wait until the new phones come to Canada with the newer version of the Android Operating System."

I gave it 3/5 stars and said that I would NOT recommend this phone to a friend.

Going forward, since Rogers has left us twisting in the wind, I'm wondering if the following idea will work:

Google is supposed to be releasing the Nexus in Janaury which apparently we can buy directly through them. Are we then able to take our Rogers sims and put them in the Nexus? Will the Nexus then be upgradable directly through Google? If so then paying Google for the Nexus is much cheaper than terminating with Rogers and we can use up the balance of our contract with Rogers. Probably by that time we will be able to go with an American carrier or go directly with Google.

I believe one of the major reasons Google is going where it is with the Nexus has to do with exactly with the kind of situation we have here in Canada with the Jolly Roger crowd.

Best idea and question so far. In general, will our SIMs work in other droidish phones or does rogers do something with that too?

Everything is still up in the air about the Nexus One. The only real hurdle will be what band the phone will use. Over at Engadget they seem to think it will be a HSPA 900 / 1700 / 2100 triband which means we are sol.

I really hope that there will be multiple versions of the phone if released. Google is smart enough to figure this stuff out so that everyone is covered.
