Can you believe it? Most of us have yearly upgrades, and many of us got the EVO in the first few weeks. I just realized that in under six months I'll be switching phones.

It's been a hell of a ride so far. Wonder if there will even be anything enticing enough to make me switch. I don't think that I will be drooling over another phone's release the way I was for months with the EVO.

I haven't had the Evo since launch, but I'm in the same time frame for an update. So far there's nothing released or previewed that makes me envious. The dual core stuff is coming, but I'm not convinced the speed difference will be all that. From what I understand 2.2 and likely 2.3 will not fully support dual core processors. There aren't a whole lot of rumored features that would entice me to upgrade either. NFC? Gyroscopic input? We'll know a lot more after CES.

I think everyone says they are content right now, but after the new hotness for summer 2011 is announced at CES a lot of people will be changing their tune.

Just like WarDamnEagle09 said, most of us refuse to have phone envy. And if the upgrade is available for us premiere customers, why not utilize it? I love my Evo but I think a paltry $200 for the latest and greatest will be too enticing to pass up next summer.

As soon as the next gen phones come out my evo is hitting ebay. :)

I'm late in the upgrade game and just got mine this month but I plan on selling it off and biting the bullet when the new phones come out to get back on schedule with the upgrades. More processor is always good. Not to mention whenever else they come up with by then...

When I get a phone I'm really happy with, I stick with it until it dies.

I was worried about upgrades vs. memory, but then it hit me - with a rooted phone and the right magic, some of the filesystems can be moved to the SD card with an ext partition (already being done for data with the high-speed kernels).

Add in the rumor that SD cards are coming with the NFC goodness built-in for phones missing it.... (not that I see myself ever liking NFC, but hey...)

In this case - I'll just wait and see. I can't imagine wanting more in 6 months - but...

I want the improved garbage collection and codec support for Gingerbread.

When I finished college, I looked back and said "It's been a hell of a ride", not after owning a telephone for 6 months.

Why not? Well, for starters, it still costs $200 (or so) for the "new hotness", so that would be one reason not to. You have to extend your contract again, which some may not want to do. But, the biggest reason, in my opinion, would be because there are a lot of people that see "phone envy" as just plain pathetic.

By the way, "contempt" =/= "content".

I am almost the same. I can't think of many things I need that would make me switch from the EVO soon. In fact I bet there are still many things the EVO can do that I yet to even try.

I have never been an updater just to update or switch to something just because it has 1 more feature than what I have.

I guess what worries me the most is how customizable the next gen phones will be. The Evo from the beginning was pretty easy to root then we were on our way. It seems that with each iteration of software/hardware upgrade, it is getting more difficult to crack. Sprint has to be losing money with "Wireless Tether", cracked "Sprint Hotspots" etc. I believe they will be making the next gen phones even more difficult to root. Example, while it is possible to crack the Hboot on the new 004 Hardware, it is much more difficult and the risks seem to be higher.

Support for this phone from the developers has been over the top GREAT! That can't be said for some of the other Android devices..cough..cough Epic which my wife has. This facet for me is a pretty serious consideration. I was lucky I think that I wanted the Evo from the beginning and Sprint, HTC and XDA have been on it tweaking and updating ever since. Seems like there is never a dull moment. Heck HTC may even have 2.3 and the new Sense on it before the Epic has Froyo. So with that said, because I'm a techy at heart (no phone envy I just like the newest technology), I'll take a wait and see attitude (I did spring too early for the Instinct and hated Samsung ever since), to see how it plays out.

It's a toy for me, so who knows? Damn good to see you in a post again :) Hope all is well!

In my opinion, it was a lot of fun. Sorry it wasn't enough for you to call it a hell of a ride so far. And for me at least, it isn't about envy...it's about me. I could not care less what others think of my phone.

I'm with you there. The dev support is amazing, and some new phones are looking too locked for me. But, I am keeping my mind open to see if something else makes me excited.

It's not like I can't ESN swap back to the evo if I try something else and it isn't for me.

I got my evo just after launch, and didnt have an upgrade until October. So i paid full price for it..
And i have an upgrade sitting waiting since october but i have no reason to use it.. and i dont see anything thatll make me upgrade anytime soon.

Not unless theres something that has the same specs of the evo with a few upgrades that id like to see, but so far, nothing looks like it for a while.

It's a toy for me, so who knows?

But as toys go, this is a reaallly good one.

I downloaded Angry Birds to help some others around here troubleshoot things.

I am actually now addicted to Angry Birds - my first video game addiction in over 35 years. Wouldn't have happened without the 4.3" screen.

With the memory issues and newest bloatware, rooted is the only way to go with this beast, that's for sure.

I'm really happy with it and now want the improved garbage collection and codec support coming with Gingerbread and the new Sense enhancements (cached maps, unified inbox).

At this point, it's doing way more than I could've ever expected out of a phone. I don't see any material changes coming for my use case.

That said - HTC is hiring display and e-ink engineers at their Research Triangle Park location.

If I am going to replace my Evo, and I don't think I am, but if I am, I'm going to do as near to the day that they come out with a display like a Pixel Qi - a hybrid of LCD and e-ink that easily switches between the two (a lot of my use - and all of my outdoor use would be way better with e-ink - not to mention the power saving that gives), maybe more memory, and more battery life.

I've no doubt that dual-cores await us, but I'll care when they demonstrate those with higher power efficiency - right now, it's a guess which way that'll go.

So - my use cases don't look to change soon - but if I can have them with longer life, e-ink+LCD, higher stability and higher speed - sure, you bet - it'll be new toy time!

But until then... man, I'm happy!

Cheers and best holidays to all!

(And yeah, I'm baaaaaack - trying to help new Androiders in the other forum threads, too. Was away for no-big-deal health reasons. You cats ain't losing me that easy! :) )

I'm not sure if I'll ever let the Evo go anytime soon. So far I'm very happy with it and all my needs have been address by this phone. Of course this is coming from a guy who kept his Treo 650 for 5 years before I switched to the Evo.

I think the only thing that can make me upgrade is if there's a phone out there with the same capabilities with a better camera (more lens and sensor wise) and HDR capabilities. I'm not interested in higher processing power at all. :)

This has nothing to do with phone envy, but I always want to have the latest technology, and if the cost is about $200 to $400 to get a better specs phone next June, I would not be able to wait another full year before getting the new one. The way I look at it is this, depending on your plan, your phone is probably costing you about $2,500 + phone cost every 2 years. This would be about $2,700 for a $200 phone. If I have to buy the second phone for $400, then my cost goes up to $3,100 less resale value of old phone over 2 years. Not a big difference to me, especially to be able to always have the latest technology/specs.

However, nothing in the pipeline that I know of makes my mouth water.

I doubt that I will be getting a new phone. The Evo seems to have everything that I need in a phone for at least another year. Plus I have only had my Evo for 4 months now, I paid full price because I got the Samsung Moment around november of last year, and with that phone I was actually jealous of all of the other phones that came out three months after my purchase. I have barely starched the surface with rooting the Evo. I have been using the Fresh roms but I having been thinking about flashing some other roms just to get a different experience.

I still love my Evo almost as much as the day I bought it (launch day). It's hard for me to like a phone for very long as I get bored rather quickly, but with Sprint updating it as much as they do keeping it fresh and exciting, I don't see myself buying another phone in the near future. In fact, my neighbor went from the original Droid, to a dumbphone, back to her Droid and she likes my phone more. LOL.
