Hero text messaging

So I purchased my hero over a week now and coming from WM6 (sllooowww), there's one thing i spotted a difference in text messaging. I got the Handcent app for my text messaging and my girlfriend has spotted the difference in the texts. Using WM6, when I surpass 160 letters, the message is sent as one big text. With hero, it divdes it to separate texts.
Is there a way I can modify that?

Hmmm, I remember reading somewhere that this had more do to with the network than the phone. Was your WinMo device on the new Telus HSPA network? It could be the way the new network handles it.

Could be I'm way off tho' But I'm on Rogers using the Hero unlocked and default messaging app and I'm sure it sends them in one big message if I pass 160.

There is a setting on Handcent Auto convert to mms, when message count is more than 3. hope this goes some way to helping

Yeah i tried that, as well the unticking the Split 160. Are there any options =(. I just don't like how it takes a while for the second part or third to send. A bit picky but yeah =P

To be picky, it will never be sent as one long message because 160 characters is the maximum that can be sent in a single SMS. What happens with many (most) mobile phones is that when they store such a message (either one they've sent or one they've received) they store and display the multiple messages that were transmitted as a single message.

I guess the issue is why the message isn't stored/displayed this way. Is the problem on your phone when you have sent the message or on your girlfriend's when she receives it?

I think that's it, since Rogers & Fido are the same. Something to do with Rogers network... they are able to send the message all together.

the issue is actually both. When i send over 160 letters of a text, it does not split as it does now, but my girlfriend receives it in order. While she on the other hand, sends me a long text, all broken up, not in order. That is why it is hard to read messages when they're not in order

I havent been able to send telus a email just yet, been so busy, I really do hope it does not concern with the network

It must be the network because my gf sends me long txts and they come to my phone as one, and show up as one long txt :/

I finally managed to write an email to Telus and here is their response,

yes it is a Sprint deal, my wife asked the same question to me about her blackberry curve. There is an app called beyond160 for the blackberry but I don't know about the HTC hero. We were with At&t before and she could type as many characters as she wanted so that's how I discovered it being carrier related (oh and google helped also, haha). At least on the HTC hero it does not stop you at 160 like the BB does but it will still send 2 messages rather than one big one. Guess that's why they call it SMS and not LMS (long media message).

The problem is not weather you're allowed to send long texts or not, the problem is that when the text messages come in they're scrambled.

I was using a Blackberry Curve for about a year on the Fido network and whenever I got really long text messages they would just be stitched into one without any problems. I would also be able to send long text messages (6 times 160 characters, then it cut me off). I'm not sure how the messages looked when people received them but I know that when I got long text messages it was just one long text message.

Now with a Hero on Telus, when i receive a text message the different parts of it are scrambled. It usually looks like I get the third part of the text message first, then the first part with a (1/2) preceding and then the second part of the text message with a (2/2) in front of it. This is really annoying and not cool.

What are other hero users saying from other networks? Is this what your text messages are looking like too?

Actually if I get a message that has to be broken up into three parts it looks like this: The third part is received first, it has "02/02:" in front of it. Then I receive the first part and it has "(1/2) 01/02:" in front of it. Then I get the second part and it has "(2/2)" in front of it.

This format is really inconsistent and is starting to bother me. I heard that the hero should be getting a firmware update sometime soon and be going to android 2.1, would that solve the problem or is it something else?

Thanks. I'm going to test it out. In the description it says its supposed to help with Rogers network but maybe it'll work. I'll tell you if it helped.

I asked my girl to send me a long text aka 3 pages long and they are in sync. Not so much as one big text but it isn't scrambled as before, but I have yet to try a 6 page one if that ever so happens to come by . Thanks for the app recommendation

I have the Sprint HERO and finally broke down and started using Handcent. For two main reasons, one it will auto size* a picture when sending it and that you can turn off the 160 split. If it is sent as one text, I get it as one text and if I decide to text a novel, it goes as one text.

*The standard app has a 1M limit for sending and receiving. Handcent will resize for MMS and FB Upload.


**PS. Not sure if any Hero users have noticed that your MMS are not downloading, after digging around, I found if you turn off your WiFi, they will download. Odd I know.*** I like having the WiFi turned on, it helps on the battery since WiFi over rides the network so the phone does not have to ping the network as much. This was a tip by a Sprint network engineer and then backed up by a Product engineer from HTC and BlackBerry.
