Texting is a big thing these days, and the Droid is a great phone, but the texting options aren't go at all. If you are a texter, this phone is not for you. You can't save a text and then send the same text to your friends. You can't send sound attachments (like ringtone sounds) with your picture (roses). This problem needs an update for texters.

I am a heavy texter and the Droid flat out rocks for texting. Handcent or ChompSMS and try the long press gestures as Joe suggested. There are THOUSANDS of free apps in the market for the taking...

except with handcent force closes, deletes all my texts..

or force closes and stops receiving texts.. they show up in the pop up but once i go to my messages their not there. sucks having to reboot the phone sometimes cuz of it

I guess everybodys mileage will vary. I have never had any of those problems in the month and a half of owning my Droid.

Somewhat off topic, but regarding texting-

Yesterday I was having a text conversation with a friend and on several instances a different name showed up in the dialogue box than the person I was texting. The name that showed up was someone that I had texted several days ago. It was only for a moment and then reverted to the correct name.

Is this any reason for concern?

The following message is from another person. I am having the same problems that this person is having.

Hello everyone. I've been a verizon customer for several years now. I used to own the EnV touch and recently upgraded to the new Motorola Droid. There is one feature that I have been missing though since the upgrade, and that is the ability to send sound files. I've been searching all over the net for a solution to this problem and so far I have come up with nothing. The only way I'm able to send the files I used to be able to send right now is to send the sound from another phone to my Droid (via text message), and then forward the attachment to who ever I was going to send the file too. This of course requires two phones and isn't really a solution at all. I had come across these handcent forums last week and saw that this update that occurred last weekend may indeed support sound files. Needless to say I was excited about this weekends update.

I got the update now, and I have tried a few of my sound clips (that I had no trouble forwarding or sending from my other phone) and I got mixed results. I could only send the REALLLLLY small sound clips, not any of the regular ones. Is there any chance that Handcent will eventually allow me to send all the files I am able to send from other phones?

My thoughts are that since I am able to forward these files from my Motorola Droid - the fact that I can not create a new one is perhaps a bug?

Thank you in advance for your time.

Again, I'm using the new Motorola Droid on the Verizon network (if that helps).

And another message from someone else.

I am looking for this feature also. The stock messaging utility doesn't even have the option for it (as it appears most other peoples do not either) and even while using handcent it will not let me send them. The sound clips are in mp3 format and are all under 1mb. I even took one fill and kept cutting it down in size using ringdroid. I took it down to under 100kb and still said it was to big. My Voyager would send mp3's over 1 minute long so i dont really understand why this phone wont. I spent about an hour on the phone today with motorola asking about it and the guy i was on the phone with was taking me through the steps to send it and he told me his droid had the option on the stock messager to send audio. He told me he had 7 choices and I only have 6 for attackments. Then he just said "is there anything else i can help you with"? Real helpful people. Anyways are there any plans to make larger audio files part of handcent? My 1 month is slowly approaching.

And another message.

*BUMP* After bugging the hell out of Motorola they told me that the Motorola Droid will not and is not supposed to send any type of audio file via text of any kind besides what you can record with the record audio selection. Sooooo i bump this in an attempt to get the audio file size limit increased way up for verizon users. This 100kb limit or whatever it is just isnt enough for what verizon customers are used to. Most of the audio i moved over from my Voyager is 700kb - 900kb and it would send on my old verizon phone (LG Voyager). I doubt that I will still have this Droid by the time any of this happens but it's still a feature that needs to be made to work better with Verizon customers larger texting capabilities. I miss my Voyager a little more day by day when i want to send people audio texts.

alright yall are talking about handcent so ill ask here. and its about handcent if anyone can help.

im using it right now but for some reason, it wont show the names of people who have texted me already, even though they are my contacts. it shows about 3 people by there names, all the other people it shows by their phone numbers. but when i use the regular messaging app that the phone came with it shows the peoples names just fine.

maybe im just stupid and am over looking something really obvious.
ive done searches to try and figure it out but ive come up with nothing.
