Fool me twice... The truth - Samsung is a FRAUD

Let me just say, I like my Captivate. I would consider myself a "techy" so I don't have any real technical problems with the phone. I haven't had too many problems with GPS (although it isn't perfect), I've been able to do a lot of great things with Android, It gets great reception, and overall I like it more then my old iphone 3GS. The battery-life is a little sad, but other than that I can't really complain. However, I do have to lay out a truth that I have now realized and wish I would have been wise enough to foresee. There will be no updates for this phone. If there is, it will be Froyo and it will be toward the end of the phone's life cycle. Even then, I would be surprised.

Let me explain to you all hoping for any kind of software update from Samsung, you will never get it. You can probably forget Froyo and DEFINITELY forget about Gingerbread. Your phone is what it is and Samsung has gotten their money and moved on. I regret letting Samsung fool me twice (Shame on me). I remember when I was enticed by another Samsung phone that was promised many updates and was basically thrown out to consumers and forgotten about. Since then I've followed Samsung's phones to see just how awful their business practices are. One of the worst things I saw was their treatment of the Samsung Jet. This was a phone that was branded as "Smarter than a Smartphone". There was a major release-date party. It was given great technology that did everything and more than just about every other phone that was out at the time. Unfortunately, it had horrible flaws. Widgets were lame, apps were missing completely. An app store was promised, but it took months to deliver and when it came out, it was garbage. What's even better, promised firmware updates were constantly delayed. "Updates coming soon" was a constant finding on the Samsung Jet facebook page (which, hilariously, was the only source of news for Jet owners, no official website, no press releases, just a crappy facebook page). Go there now, there are still people absolutely devastated and furious that they were lied to and taken. Eventually, people realized that Samsung was never going to do anything for them. They gave up hope. Samsung released a handful of minor updates that did nothing. Basically, Samsung put the phone out, made a TON of money in Asia and Europe, then abandoned them for their new phones.

Does this all sound familiar? It should. This is exactly what has happened with the Captivate. Give up hope for any updates. I was foolish enough to think that Samsung in conjunction with AT&T couldn't possibly screw consumers like this. I was wrong. If we are smart, we will start a class-action suit immediately, as part of what was promised for this phone (an update to 2.2 by September, wait, October, wait, November... okay, before 2010... hold on) never came. If you're smart, you will learn from history, that of not only the Samsung Jet, but of all Samsung phones. Do not give them any more money. Do not support them. Do not be fooled by Samsung again. Take it from someone who has learned the hard way. Your next phone will be the same. Their new line will be promised updates to post-Gingerbread firmware... they won't get it, by then Samsung will be on to their next next line. It's a never-ending cycle.

I do believe we will see an update, like you said who knows when at this point, I will be honest and say that I do not care at this point if we get one and would not waste one day of my life assisting in a law suit,. Lets face it we are ripped off everytime we put gas in our cars.

Having said that, I completely agree with you that letting this company know they messed up by not buying their products anymore is the best way to skin this cat. I too should have learned twice before, last time with the Eternity, same thing ...updates coming, and I swore never to by a samsung again......YEAAAAHHHH.....well you know where I am at. I will skip samsung on my next trip regardless of what they have out.

I, too, am getting impatient with Samsung's support (or lack thereof) in bringing 2.2 to our Captivates. However, Samsung USA never promised any specific month for the update--only that they would "release Froyo this year."

https://twitter.com/SamsungMobileUS/status/28050721691

In August, @SamsungService tweeted that they were "testing software to optimize GPS on Galaxy S phones" and promised the update in September. People assumed that the GPS fix would be rolled into Froyo, thus starting the Froyo-in-September rumors. September brought us the JH7 update, which didn't seem to do much for most, but it was an update nonetheless.

Twitter / Samsung Service: Samsung is testing softwar ...

In October, Samsung UK issued a Press Release that the Galaxy S would receive 2.2 by the end of November. Many tech blogs misinterpreted that "all operator versions of the software" would include the US counterparts, thus starting the Froyo-in-November rumors. Unfortunately, Samsung UK could only speak for the UK.

New Android 2.2 upgrade announced for Samsung Galaxy S | News from SAMSUNG

Forums tend to have a habit of turning misinterpreted tweets into "facts." Samsung is really testing our patience here. You can be mad at them for being drastically slower than HTC and Motorola in bringing us 2.2, but you can't be mad at them for not following through on something that they never promised.

We still haven't passed their end-of-the-year deadline, but if in 2 weeks we still don't have Froyo, feel free to raise some hell.

If Froyo is your main concern, then it's YOUR fault for not switching to a ROM since ROM's like Cognition are completely bugless (at least until 2.3b7) and it's basically Froyo, maybe with something extra such as the Gingerbread Keyboard. I don't see any differences between this and the actual Froyo except that the ROM comes with extra applications that might be useful that are preinstalled and it just works well. Within the next few days, we can expect a few more Gingerbread ROM's to come out too from the devs and yeah, with such a phone such as this one, you can expect that your life can be complete again. The process is simple, it works, and it does piss me off when people complain about Froyo when the solution is pretty simple.

Dude I flashed my phone a hundred times and the roms are awesome but ALL built off unstable releases of froyo. Your passing off really bad information. What is the longest you ever ran one of these roms continuously? After a few weeks they all start showing something. Not to mention people who dont flash or use their phones as a hobby should not have to learn how to flash their device to get a update. take that advice over to XDA. I have ran every one of those roms. i appreciate greatly the time invested by designgears and everyone else, and maybe if people start donating more over there the roms will be better, but at this point none of them are a OFFICIAL froyo release.

and BTW "completely bugless" are you out of your mind? Right on the Cog home page has the list.

omg you are sooooo right i have been running perception since release #4

I am on 8 now and have no issues what so ever

I was afraid of flashing at first but once i tried it i realized what I had been missing. It is so easy and painless I don't even think i would use an official update anyway

like he said you want Froyo go get it !!!!

Actually, I would argue that we have. Previous updates for this phone (and all US Android phones except the Aria initially) were rolled out OTA in batches or "waves" over a span of time. The JH7 update took about 3 weeks to reach most consumers according to the time-span of comments on these and other forums. That was in late September/early October, and I would argue that many more Galaxy S devices have been sold in the US since then. We have less than 3 weeks remaining in 2010 to deliver an update to more phones than before, so logistically it is now impossible for them to deliver Froyo to each phone sold before the new year.

Are you being sarcastic? Tylerdurdin's post was spot on. There are obvious bugs, not deal-breakers but nevertheless saying it is bug less is just false. Also, flashing should not be taken lightly.

I can only speak from my experience and I have had no issues since flashing and I have been running for more than a few weeks.

just giving options man

Hacked-up ROMs based upon either different hardware or beta/developer releases are not substitutes for reasonable and promised support by the company. Not every consumer is a hardware hacker, not ever consumer is going to be comfortable with the work and risks involved, and nor should they be expected (like so many people do) to "just flash a hacked ROM or else STFU".

And all of these hacked-up ROMs have some bugs/issues. They are not bug/problem free... even if you personally have not been affected by the issues. Try doing some reading and see what the mass statistics on a grander scale are instead of assuming your little personal anecdotal experience applies to the whole world.

If you want to just insult everyone who doesn't flash a hacked ROM, go hang out at XDA as that is the SOP there. Here, we cater to people who like to use their phones with the software supplied/intended... and there's nothing wrong with that.

Definitely waiting for the update here. Samsung will definitely get it out soon. Definitely keeping my Captivate here.

Anyways these people who obsess over Android updates are a bit weird. Now I want 2.2 because of flash which is a big deal, but for example 2.3 is a very minor update, after 2.2 I'll stop caring.

If you're that worried over updates Nexus S is the phone for you...

I bought my Captivate in August. I love it. I knew nothing of Froyo until joining this site. Would I like the updates? Sure. But I did not buy it for Froyo. I think this device is equal to or better than I Phone (biased, I hate Apple).
One question though, if the rest of the world has Froyo on their Samsung phones, then doesn't that make it a carrier issue?
Waiting for Froyo does not occupy my time. I have a 4 year old and three Fantasy Football leagues that do that.
If you have to have Froyo that bad, root the phone and get it!

Partially. The manufacturer has to make a custom build that supports the model's unique hardware (and the Captivate has several hardware bits unique and different from other Galaxy S models). Then the carrier takes that and customizes it with their own branded pre-installed apps, as well as dictating what stock features they want restricted/gone/etc.

To those who whine about updates...

My updates (DEV's hard work building custom ROMs) are FAR superior to anything Samsung will ever release. I have been on Froyo for a while now and will be on Gingerbread shortly if I had to guess.

First, this thread is not about flashing roms. Second I have flashed all those roms, we get it, there great, but not stable and people should NOT HAVE TO FLASH BRAND NEW PHONES TO GET UPDATES. What is hard to understand about that? Its fine for us nerds who do this as a hobby but not for the masses, there are enough dipshits on XDA complaining their phone is broke and go there for free support, clog the forums and donate nothing. This thread is about samsung selling devices and offering no TERM support. Read the OP.

I don't see any bugs on that page, nor have I had any. I've been running Cognition's ROM's for about the past two months or so, and I am a pretty heavy user and have not had any bugs with the phone at all. I can't deny I had a problem with the first version of the ROM I downloaded about two months ago, after which, within just a day, the problem was fixed and the new update was sent out. As for "official" Froyo releases, it just doesn't have the seal, but in fact, it has all the features of Froyo, actually even more. As for flashing as a hobby, I do not flash as a hobby or any of that, there's just a simple three or four step process to follow and yeah, all I can say is, try 2.3b7 for Cognition, and if you don't like, it, you're free to switch out.

There's Froyo right in front of you, about 20 minutes way from installing it on your phone, and you can refuse to install it on your phone, but that doesn't mean you should complain that you don't have it. And no, XDA is filled with pretty smart people who aren't dipshits complaining that their phones are broken and it works better than that. What's even better is that the ROM I use, the Cognition ROM, has an IRC chat set up that's active almost the entire day in case you need help, so I don't see why there's any problem there...

I have had my Cappy since October 7; it is my first Android and I love it so far. I wish GPS worked better and I am really looking forward to some of the updated apps that only work under Froyo. But I can wait. I don't see why some people are getting so worked up about this. On the other hand, being a bit of a geek, I was tentatively thinking of trying to flash an unofficial ROM until I read this thread. I think I'll wait a while longer before I consider it again.

One thing we should all be thankful for is this forum. I'm old enough to remember when there was no way for consumers to have such great access to each other and to people who know how to hack and solve problems. If this were 1990, we'd all be at the sole mercy of AT&T and Samsung. As it is, we have each other -- and a wealth of information, hacks, downloads, etc. at our fingertips.
