Unlocked Nexus One OTA Updates

Hello,

I am a recent iPhone convert to Android and an currently evaluating both the Nexus One on T-Mobile and the Evo. So far the native Exchange Support is worlds better on the Evo than the Nexus One (I had to install Touchdown). My understanding is Froyo fixes a lot of that. How are OTA updates done for unlocked phones? I noticed the phone I have does not have the multitouch update that was done in February (no pinch to zoom in Browser and no Google Goggles installed). I tried the *#*#checkin#*#* trick, and it checks in successfully, but no updates. Am I doing something wrong?

Most OTA's will come to the phone through the carrier in IMEI order. Froyo has not been officially released to the public therefore you system is "technically" up to date. There were a multitude of phones given out at google i/o that contain 2.2 there was also a leak of the update via the net. Two more Patches or updates have surfaced since then. All of us who are running Froyo are doing so either from I/O or manually updated from the leaked source files. I hope that helps as we all would like to see the official OTA released as well. Which looks to be "Very Soon"

Thanks for the information! So should I be worried that my Nexus One does not have the February Update yet? Is there any way just to force that one?

I too have an unlocked phone and I've emailed my carrier about this. The carrier advised me to do manual updates through the phones manufacturer because the IMEI for unlocked phones are recorded as a generic. This means that you will probably not get the update OTA.

I have received OTA updates in the past so...you shouldn't have get any problems either

I guess it depends on the carrier then. I use Rogers in canada. When I log onto their system, it shows me what phone they have me listed under as using. So when I was using a sony ericsson w810i originally from purchased from them, the system said w810i. But once I switched to any unlocked phone not purchased originally from them, they didn't list the phone on the system anymore.

The only difference it should make is where you get the OTA from. So, if you use an unlocked Nokia on Rogers, your updates will come from Nokia, but still OTA. If you use an unlocked Nexus One on Rogers, your updates will come from Google OTA.
