Recommending Go Launcher (was "New Launcher!" and "Go Sms"))

I have to say great customer support. Sent them an email about my contact issue and they are already on the fix within 12 hrs. Looks like I will test the Beta later tonight to see if the problem is fixed.

Lmk how it goes. I only have 1 contact picture working.

Handcent is done this is much smoother, a little less customizable right now(no big deal) and the kicker mms works. I couldn't for the life of me get mms to work through handcent

Here is a shot with the Kindle and google icons changed. Try resizing the icon before you save it, it may work.

Tried it but have to go back to LP(P). GL has no Change Shortcut option in the scrollable dock like LP, where I can then select a Folder Organizer Label/Folder, or a direct dial shortcut (http://androidforums.com/droid-x-tips-tricks/181870-how-get-direct-dial-direct-text-shortcuts-x.html)created with Folder Organizer in the scrollable dock for even more app access and organization.

GL has 3 options to edit a dock shortcut: Choose Application, Choose Icon, and Choose Icon Gesture. LP has Choose Icon and Choose Icon Gesture, but it has Change Shortcut instead of Choose Application, and this is the difference that is the deal breaker for me with GL. As Change Shortcut has many more options in addition to just launching an application.

In the screenshot above, the second icon from the left in the scrollable dock is a Folder Organizer Label for Utilities. Selecting this "Shortcut" opens a folder with all my utility apps in it.

In this screenhot, I have direct dial shortcuts to my wife's mobile number and my Home.

If GL just changes the Choose Application to Choose Shortcut functionality, then I may give GL another try.

I am very new to DX, I am using GL and like it. I am also using WidgetLocker, very nice app. I thought I saw a post about the "5 second rule" and how to get around it when GL starts? At least that's what I think is delay when I unlock my phone.
Any ideas? I havent rooted yet.

The 5 second rule doesn't apply to GL. It is a replacement lockscreen ie Widgetlocker specific thing. It can be found in the Widgetlocker settings but it does require root access.

It means that after turning the screen of the lockscreen cannot be bypassed again within 5 seconds. SO you cannot turn the screen off and back on before 5 seconds or you will see the stock lockscreen. Its a non issue for most people.

GL was updated today, you can now use shortcuts on the dock and for swipe gestures.

Appreciate the timely update. :)

However, the shortcut doesn't display the right icon, it displays a default icon for the app associated with the shortcut action. Example, for a direct dial shortcut, it only offers the dialer icon along with the GL icons instead of the contact's icon. And when I choose a Folder Organizer Label shortcut, it only offers a Folder Organizer app icon, not the custom icon I set for that folder.

loved Go Launcher, but battery life was WEAK using it...

not sure what it was to be honest, but I just noticed general battery performance to be pretty poor...

even when sitting with the screen off for long periods of time my phone would chew battery...I installed Go Launcher the same day as receiving my extended battery and honestly was getting worse battery life than my stock battery...

Dealt with it for a few days thinking the battery might need a few cycles, and then started doing some digging...using battery history i found that my "sensor usage" was always on...phone was always running etc...

uninstalled Go Launcher this morning...and went back to LP Pro...took almost 5 hours before hitting 90% battery and im sitting here as we speak almost 10 hours in and still at 90% (albeit light usage)...sensor usage is very minimal and the only change was uninstalling Go Launcher so i have to assume that was causing some issue...

it will be LPP for me from now on...

I am having problems with MMS with gosms...

It will not automatically D/L the pic...I have to manually download the pic...

I emailed the dev numerous times about this issue with no reply...

I have auto retrieve checked in the stock messaging app...

I can turn the phone off and do a battery pull...after that I can get one mms...after that...like I said...I have to D/L it manually...

Any Ideas?...

I finally decided to try some app launchers today. I tried ADW, Launcher Pro and GoLauncher.

I didn't give them too much of a run-through, but I really liked how the GoLauncher app locker on this looked, with the transparency and the darkening of the background.

For whatever reason, I settled on GoLauncher. Very happy that I finally tried an alternative launcher.

Really the thing that I hated most about the Droid X launcher is that it didn't revert you back to the place you were last. That was actually there before the 2.2 update (or maybe it was before the update before that). Why did that take that out?

Now, I've got so many more features to play with.

I decided to give it a second try. I see they have added the ability to install a custom background on the dock now which was one of the bummers. And Ive finally figured out that you can browse to additional apps by selecting activities when changing the dock icons. I was getting pissed when I thought id have to settle with the stock browser vs. my beloved xscope, at least that is solved. the only thing ive got my fingers crossed for is an increase in grid density. having the option up to 10x10 would be nice. my next move is to uninstall LPP plus and see if things get even smoother.

I'm finding GoLaucher to be more stable with roms that are more stable. I have no trouble with it on ApeX. I had more trouble on other roms (root), even though they seem to be stable apart from working with GL. So, I'm back on ApeX with GL with no trouble
