Root Guide to flashing your Orange San Francisco / ZTE Blade with a custom ROM

If you're having issues with screen colour and power button not working then the original Orange ROM for TFT screen can be found here (make sure you download the TFT version) :

[OLED+TFT] 06/Dec: Stock ROM downloads + Online Kitchen - Android @ MoDaCo

Simply rename the downloaded file as update.zip and copy it to your SD card. Then re-flash your phone using ClockworkMod Recovery.

If you are going to flash back to the original Orange ROM then make sure you select 'wipe data / factory reset' option in ClockworkMod Recovery BEFORE you 'apply update.zip'.

Apparently, there will be an updated custom ROM for TFT screens within the next week.

All sorted now. Thanx for your help Mr Burn!! :)

With this ROM how do you choose a different homescreen/launcher?

Don't think you can. You had a choice previously because of the Orange launcher app which let you choose between Orange launcher and default Android launcher. Obviously the Orange stuff has now been removed.

If you want to change homescreen / launcher then try either 'Launcher Pro' or 'Zeam Launcher' from the market :)

I've unlocked and rooted my phone successfully. Yesterday I managed to load Clockwork Recovery and boot into Clockwork Recovery. I then istalled the Froyo 2.2 update zip file ontot the root of the SD folder.

However, when in clockwork recorvery and selected update zip from SD Card, all seem to be progressing fine. Then i got the following error message and installation was aborted : E: Board does not support mtd utils.E:Failure at line 68:
write_raw_image PACKAGE:boot.img BOOT:
Installation aborted.

If there is anyone out then who can please advise where I’m going wrong then I will be very grateful as phone is now stuck on the green android screen (however can still boot into Clockwork Recovery mode) just not use the phone.

You haved used ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.1.3, that's the problem. I had the same issue too. You need to install 2.5.0.9 instead and it should work fine.

Luckily you don't need to boot your phone to install it. Turn on your phone holding the volume up button and then use flashboot to install version 2.5.0.9. You can get it from zip file I've posted links to in the first post of this thread :)
Many thanks for the post BurnCK. Sorry to be a nuisance but I have downloaded version 2.5.0.9 Clockwork Recovery, switched on my phone holding the power button and up volume button so I have the green adroid image. I have then connected my phone to my PC and from a command prompt typed the following: fastboot-flash recovery clockwork.img, which is what I typed previously when installing 2.5.1.3. However this time I get the following error: cannot load clockwork.img.

Any suggestions? any help greatly appreciated.

If you're using the .img file from the zip file I posted then you need to type 'fastboot-windows flash recovery recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.9-modaco-r2-blade.img' :)

If it's a different file name then type 'fastboot-windows flash recovery' followed by the actual .img file name.

Also make sure you've placed the .img file in the fastboot folder.

It's worked a treat, should've realised the filename was different. Many thanks for all your help BurnCK.

Thank You

No probs :)

Let me know how it goes and if all is ok (which I'm sure it will be) then I can add that ROM to my original post.

All seems to be working rather well at the moment. :) I did noticed there was no alarm clock but I ended up downloading 'Better Alarm Free' from market place!!

I only installed to lite version not the FAT add on because I'm not sure how to installed add ons!!

Hi all, thanks for the guide, nice to have these sorts of processed simplified.

I'm currently following the steps in your guide and have got to step 8, I have entered and started the fastboot-windows flash recovery recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.9-modaco-r2-blade.img command but cmd is just sat with a message saying < waiting for device >. I'm not sure how long this should take but it's been a good 10-15 minutes now and I can't see it taking that long to install. I'm afraid to uplug it from my machine in case it hald-installs and messes everything up. Any ideas?

I'm running Vista by the way.

Thanks

Oh dear, I've followed these instructions on my son's new San Francisco and now it won't boot - just get the green android staring at me.

When I try to apply the update.zip, I get the following messages:

Code:
ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.9 (MoDaCo r2)

-- Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...

Installing update...
Formatting SYSTEM:...
Copying files...
Formatting BOOT:...
Writing BOOT:...
E:Error writing BOOT:
E:Failure at line 80:
write_raw_image PACKAGE:boot.img BOOT:
Installation aborted
I tried to read the SD card in a reader on my laptop, The card mounts as a letter, but it says it has nothing on it. I don't think Windows can read the contents.

Anyone any suggestions please!!!

Thanks

Al
