Root Restore contacts and sms after changing to a new ROM?

I switched to a new ROM but first did a titanium and nandroid backup. Is there a way I can get my sms and contacts back? And I've been looking around and I'm an idiot and all my contacts were on my phone not google, so does that mean they are lost forever unless I restore with nandroid?

I would love to know the answer to this as well. I installed Skyraider 2.5.2 with full backup on titanium and nandroid. When I restored titanium backup, I didn't get any of my SMS back. Also, is there a way to preserve the exact state of my contact? I've linked all my contacts with facebook (most of them manually because of the difference in name) and all those "links" have been disconnected. I really don't want to go back and do the whole process again.

back when I had my blackberry (I call it the dark age) I noticed one day an app that magically appeared in my app drawer called Backup Assistant. I opened it up and it backed up all my contacts onto verizons server. Then, when I got my Dinc in the mail, one of the first things it did during setup was to ask me if I wanted to restore my contacts through Backup Assistant. I said yes and voila, all my contacts were there. I didn't have to go into verizons store and have them transfer. now, I'm looking at my Dinc now, and I'm running Cyanogenmod6 RC3 and it appears as if backup assistant is not an option. I don't know why. I will switch to my skyraider ROM and see if it's an option there, and update this post.

ok, so I switched to the Skyraider 2.2 ROM and I went to settings > accounts and sync and there is backup assistant. I don't know why it's not there on my Cyanogenmod ROM (also not sure why I can't record in 720p with my cyanogenmod ROM, but that's another topic) but it's here on skyraider.

My advice, maybe you can switch back to a previous ROM that has all your contacts in it already and has the backup assistant in settings. use it to backup your contacts, and then switch back to your current ROM and go here and follow the directions there for getting contacts from backup assistant to your google account.

I also have a contact question, similar to the OP. I rooted a phone and then did a nandroid backup of the original system config. I flashed a rom but lost a bunch of contacts due to the not syncing with gmail oversight. Can I restore the original system, backup the contacts into gmail and then restore the current rom config? Am I allowed to go back to the stock rom from backup is the question?

I don't keep contacts in the cloud either, so I usually just export them to my card once in a while, and import them after flashing a new ROM.
I do that too, but usually keep the updated ones with Gmail. I figure if they crash there will be a lot of folks up the creek and it would get fixed quickly. But I still need to know if I can flash back the old VZW rom just to export them?
