Google Operating System?

So I've been thinking about this for what seems like an eternity but...What do you all think about the possibility of a Google Operating System? I would personally LOVE a google operating system. Google has always had a really good knack for developing great products, and I think that they could really give M$ and Apple a good run for their money, especially if it were based upon the Linux Kernel and marketed properly.

since they are already porting android to netbooks and there is talk of it being on netbooks in the very near future I would say we'll know very soon if android takes off on the mobile market I would believe they would make a desktop version as well....

Interesting, but I was thinking more along the lines of a true Google OS. ( Printer Support, Ect )

I think they are very content to have others create the OS and them create web based apps like Google Docs which do support printing. They have little need to worry about ownership of the desktop cause OS may change over time but web apps are just in their infancy, a bigger market.

Well in my previous statement I was trying to show that the progression to run android or have a more complete version of android on netbooks or pc's has already begun... and with the majority of smart phones being developed these days running on a linux kernel even the new palm pre for example the idea that linux or open source OS based on linux being the microsoft of the future is very likely. If your phone is linux wouldn't you want 100% compatabilty? best way to do that is have the same software on the pc or a linux based machine and that being said we'll just have to wait and see but with microsoft finally showing weekness (laying off 5000 people) the trend to leave microsoft seemingly picking up speed http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/23/technology/companies/23soft.html
Having used windows 7 I really just don't see them holding the thrown much longer.... That's just my humble opinion though...

This is actually not a google op system the g stands for good not google... however they did hire a few EX google employees to run things...just an FYI but you should probably check the ABOUT US page when researching things... http://www.thinkgos.com/about.php

I wouldnt mind it, but only so there is a more competitive OS market. I personally wouldnt rely on it, but im sure it would be very useful to the OS community.

Well Google Chrome is on its way... but not sure how that will hold up being browser based...

I feel pretty confident the basic functionality will be there, but I doubt it will be able to do things like play WoW. I heard a rumor that they were working with Adobe, so my fingers are crossed that CS4 will work on it.

I've been following Google's SW strategies, but I am not a Google insider. Everything I'm spouting here should be read as if I'm prefacing it with: "I think," "I'm guessing," or "ahem... I have a theory."

Simply put, ChromeOS is the non-web platform for Google apps. When ChromeOS can connect to google.com or alternative server it can use it for centralized authentication/profile serving and document storage. What the Google servers do is handled locally by Google Gears when offline or when info is most sensitive.

Components: Linux kernel, ChromeOS, Chrome browser, Google apps, Google Gears, (Google servers), ...

Apps - mail, messaging, word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, calendar, authoring, ...
Chrome - rendering, menus, forms, encryption, certification, desktop, ...
Gears - database, document storage, authentication, profile database, java, http. ...
Linux - bios, boot, scheduler, processes, threads, file systems, networking, ...

So what does ChromeOS need to bring to the table? graphics library, mathlib, rpc, ...

They could make a clean break from cross-platform functionality and legacy usage models by leaving out rpc. I'm wondering if they'll make use of GNU libraries, Xlib, OpenGL, ... but I think they'd go for a lighter-weight solution.

"Google Legacy Emulation" could be a follow-on product to run WoW, MAME, Mathematica, ...
