Root Unrooting failed. Help?

Okay so I'm trying to unroot so that I can upgrade to 2.2 with the HTC software update.. I have no problem turning the S-ON and loading the PC36IMG onto my device. But still my phone seems to be rooted..

All apps that are supposed to work for only rooted phones still work and when I try to update to 2.2 the Android with an exclamation shows on the screen.

I've followed the Unrooting section from Rooting for Dummies so don't tell me to do that I've tried at least 4 times with that method.

So what other way can I unroot? Preferably without erasing all my data

1) What was your hboot version before? What is it now?
2) Which PC36IMG did you flash? The one from the rooting for dummies thread?
3) What version of Android are you at now?
4) Do you still have a custom recovery?
5) If you open a terminal emulator and type "su" without quotes, does the prompt change to # or does it stay at $?
6) Did you still have all your apps/settings after applying the PC36IMG, or did it wipe everything out?

I'm just trying to determine what worked and what didn't here. Keep in mind that if you accept the OTA update up to the latest (3.70), you're going to have a heck of a time getting root again.

Not trying to tell g916 their business - but stock rooted roms for all versions of our phone are available, if you want to go that route for updating to 2.2.

These are the same as the OTA upgrades - just rooted.

I agree. That is definitely the best route (just make sure to flash the radios separately if they aren't included with the rom). I'd still like to know where the OP is at in terms of hboot version, etc. since he already tried to unroot.

Yep - keep the radios in alignment with the OTA rom.

You saved me a potential nightmare on not updating my HBOOT - Matlock's added that tip to the Rooting for Dummies thread. Because of that, I'm finally ready to upgrade just my pri (eye, not ell) and nv confidently.

Oh - and commercial - I used Rooting for Dummies 6 months ago - just a different flavor. We ALL start as rooting dummies!

1) I don't remember what it was before.. sorry :\
2)And yeah I flashed the PC36IMG from the rooting for dummies
3)I'm at 2.1
4)Yeah I'm pretty sure I do.. I don't really know what a custom recovery is
5)I get a # sign when I type in su
6)Yep I still had everything, just when I tried upgrading to 2.2 I had to take out the battery and put it back in to be able to use the phone

Okay thank you! I was gonna try to get unrooted in case I had to take my phone into sprint..
But do you know how they check for rooted phones? Like do they only check to see if S-ON is there?

Mainly s-off, but if you just flashed the s-on tool (assuming unrevoked is your root method), but left a custom recovery, they'd know. Speaking of which, you said you could run the s-on tool. Do you currently have s-on or s-off? If you're going to update by flashing the latest stock rom + radios, you'll need s-off back if you now have s-on. Flash unrevoked forever to do so.

As far as your apparently inability to unroot, did you get any errors when you tried to flash the PC36IMG? It doesn't sound like it did anything.

EDIT: Wait, what's your current hboot version? I don't believe I ever got that info.

That means you have the original hboot that came with the phone. What method did you use to root in the first place?

ive always used unrevoked the first time i rooted i used unrevoked two I think becaue the one step root way stopped working
