just wondering if anybody feel the way i do... its going on two weeks that ive had this phone and what i noticed is that other than pinch to zoom and a front facing camera i dont find to much of a difference between my epic and the moment that i had before.. now the main reasons i feel bamboozled is that the epic is running android 2.1 which is old software and im paying a 10 dollar premium for it and no i dont have 4g in my area, second i feel this is the problem i had with the moment last year, phones were constantly being realeased with android 2.1 and us moment users were stuck on 1.5...its the same thing this year with the epic, now i'm really considering returning it and getting the evo because i want something different maybe if the epic ran 2.2 it would be another thing but i'm not about to wait 4 months just to get upgraded to 2.2 when other phones will be on to the next version of android and we will once again have old software...the biggest reason i picked the epic over the evo was i thought by the epic being a newer phone it would have more life out of it than the evo but it seem like the evo is just getting started...they still play commercials for the evo and it just feel like the epic has been abandoned by samsung and sprint and i think i need to get out before its to late.. i know their is other features on the epic like swype and a super amoled screen but i had swype on the moment and that super amoled dont look to different from regular amoled to me

I should have learned my lesson after messing with the moment but its not to late for me I only had the epic for 2 weeks if 2.2 is not on this device by the 1st I'm getting the evo cause like I said before we are paying a 10 dollar premium for an outdated operating system that probably wont get upgraded past 2.2

"I'm paying a $10 Premium and I don't have 4G in my area."
Your point is? The $10 fee has nothing to do with 4G.

And you can install FroYo build DK28 very easily. If no official update rolls out soon, I expect there will be a DL11/DL15 leak very soon.

There was an article stating that the EPIC will get Gingerbread. No one knows when that will happen, though. From what I've seen on the 2.2.1 leak, the EPIC's FroYo will be more than enough to hold us over.

This thread must be trollish. Epic same as Moment??? Are you high????

I've owned (and loved) my Moment for almost a year. But there is no freaking way the Moment is on the same level as Epic, no freaking way...

To even insinuate that means you're a troll. The Moment was a 1st gen laggy Android device that cannot compare to Epic. No insult to the Moment, but let's call a spade a spade. I was so glad to get rid of it and move to the Epic (and my Evo).

If you feel this bizarre way about Epic, please, do us a favor, sell your Epic, and go back to your Moment.

Dude ..buddy ...

You missed the op point ..he was talking about how it was the same with the moment...on the issue of long wait for promised updates.

Not that he thinks that the two phones are the same in performance.

The Moment got 2.1 fairly quickly actually.

The delay of Samsung support...well, that's been beaten to death here, so I don't understand the point of another rant thread on this...

I mean, it's only been mentioned in virtually every Samsung Galaxy S / Epic since, like ever.

Actually he said that besides the front facing camera and pinch to zoom he didn't see much of a difference....I myself have kept my friends with all the latest/greatest ROM's on their android devices and if there is one phone I hate to work on it's the Moment/Intercept because it is terrible slow compared to the Epic/Evo...He seems to not know exactly what he's talking about because as far as support goes Samsung has released a few updates since the phone has been out. Froyo will be available very, very soon and what people fail to realize about 2.2 is that it isn't a HUGE difference.................
Don't get me wrong, Froyo is better then Eclair but as far as I am concerned it is nothing to get all crazy and upset about...After running a DK28 Froyo Rom I look at it like it was nothing to get all "hot and bothered" about. What do you get??? Flash, but yet I disabled it cause it takes longer to load certain websites...I use Skyfire anyway....Next......Apps 2 SD, well games to SD are great but most of the important apps stay on my internal memory and apps with widgets cannot go to SD so that is no biggie either.....Yes, there are refinements but it's definitely something that someone can live without....Looking back at things, If I had an Epic with Android 1.6 would I leave it for a Moment for 2.1 or an Optimus S 2.2? Probably not cause the phone is so smooth that it would be pointless considered what apps you'll probably have anyway.

I just went from a Moment to the Epic and they don't even compare. I don't care that 2.2 isn't available right now because the increase in speed over the moment was worth the upgrade alone. And it is known that 2.2 will be out for the epic, unlike the moment.

Also 2.1 is hardly an outdated version. A large percentage of the phones out right now are still on 2.1.

A lot people don't get the point of the post I didn't say the moment was better because its not the epic actually blows the moment way out the water but as far as features 2.1 is holding this phone real potential back..the reason I got this phone was that I thought it was supposed to be top of the line considering it is a galaxy s phone...I feel like its screwed up that the nexus s is running a even newer version of android and its made by Samsung and has basically the same hardware as the rest of the galaxy s line...now were I'm coming from is why pay a higher premium for a phone that's running an outdated O.S. and while stuck on 2.1 not that much different from a phone like the Samsung transform..if you had a moment you had to be a little jealous last year when phones were coming out with newer versions on android and we were just promised an update in the future in which could have been 1 month or 6 months

datruth I totally understand where you're coming from and know why you feel the need just to rant.

To save everyone time here's the arc the thread will take from here:

YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE YOUR RESEARCH

SAMSUNG SAID BY THE END OF THE YEAR BY THE LATEST

SAMSUNG DOESN'T REALLY OWE US UPDATES

YES THEY DO.

NO THEY DON'T.

YES THEY DO, THEY SAID SO.

NO THEY DON'T. WE BUY PRODUCTS AS IS

ANALOGIES!!!!!!!!

ok we can end the thread now.

I actually picked mine up bc of the hummingbird.. If your going to be playing any type of games on your phone I would keep the Epic.. For example check out some of the post in the gaming section about dungeon defenders.. The Evo is is having a very hard time running that game. while the Epic runs it like a dream.

I haber owned both devices but right now I just have the evo and I can verify its oh so true. In fact I might be trading my evo for the epic because I ****ing love dungeon defenders.

2.1 is the main thing keeping me from upgrading to the Epic. Would someone explain to me why the Evo is 2.2 now but the Epic still 2.1? Even the new Samsung Galaxy Tab and Intercept are 2.2. Thanks, TC.

Speculation of course... but because Samsung had/has to make it for all of the Galaxy S line. The Epic has the 4G radio, the keyboard, front facing camera to worry about..... of course, none of the other US variants officially have it either... soooooo.....

I just think of it as the same thing the Sprint HTC Hero went through with getting 2.1.

All I can say is wow! People aren't getting froyo yet, and thus already bashing the phone. People tend to forget that the epic (as well as the evo) are two of the top phones out to date! But both come with minor flaws that people really need not cry about. Evo on 2.2.1 while epic is on 2.1, only difference being flash and app2sd. That's not enough to say that the epic is garbage. "The evo has a bigger screen by .3 inches!" That's nice, and space size is good, but keep in mind that the epics screen is damn near flawless and often compared to the iphones retina display. Also with the fact that both evo and epic run the same pixelrate, the slightly smaller screen makes it more crisp. Both the evo and epic have processors running at 1ghz. Keep in mind however that the hummingbird slays the dragon. What is smooth on epic is slightly choppy on the evo. Both phones will have its pros and cons. And keep in mind. Some phones out there are still on android 1.6 or 2.0, so let's be fortunate for what we have.

I have both epic and evo and the epic had the better screen, but the reception sucks donkey balls. The epic constantly drops calls and I won't even start with the gps issues. I thought having a physical keyboard would be an advantage but I never use it what a waste the only game I play on my phone is angry birds anyway. The epic is definitely going back to best buy this weekend. I've been a samsung phone guy for ten years so I feel like they really let me down this time

I have to disagree with the reception issue. This is my 4th smart phone and this has by far the best reception of any of them that i have owned. I have had 2 blackberries(curve and tour, both junk) and now this is my second samsung android, moment was the first. This is the only one i dont have be dialed in to the airave to get phone coverage in my house, in fact i am sitting at 3/4 to full bars most of the time.

How far do you live out from the main area of Castle Rock? In Denver, Boulder and Loveland and along I-25 i have had great reception all the time with the Epic. Even in the parents-in-law basement i still had 2 bars when i was visiting. Most times i have 4 or 5 bars.

Have you tried a different handset, it could just be that phone. The first Epic i got had a speaker issued and i had to exchange it.

America has built themselves out there to have the latest and greatest all the time. Anytime someone else have something they don't have, they get mad.

I understand Samsung is a little slow on the update but for me, 2.1 is working just fine on my Epic. No issues with the operating system.

Some people just want their cake and to eat it too.

The one singular feature that makes me want 2.2 so much is app2sd... I VERY quickly ran out of internal memory with the apps I wanted to have installed, to the point where I had to regularly uninstall some to make room for new ones. Very frustrating to say the least. I upgraded to the leaked version just for that... it left me with a completely non-functional GPS (which worked perfectly before) but app2sd is so important to me that I'm not at this point willing to go play the "go back then go to 2.2" game to fix GPS, which for me is less important. My plan has been to do a complete wipe when the OTA hits and then get updated the official way, but I don't want to have to do that more than once.

The point is, there is, in my mind, at least one absolutely must-have feature that 2.2 bring, app2sd, and the fact that the official release hasn't hit yet is annoying because it's effectively costing me GPS... something I can live without, but I'd rather not have to :)
