So am I stuck with this piece of crap?

Look it's a fine phone, but it's simply too slow, considering what else is out there. The iPhone doesn't have the same lag problems that this thing does, and it's not all that much faster in terms of processor speed. I'm just a little frustrated that I went with Verizon when I re-upped my contract and got a nice little phone that is so slow. Basically I'm sad that the Nexus One won't be available on Verizon. :( I have until Jan 13th or whatever to return it, but I don't believe I can get off the 2 year contract I signed, can I?

If you return it within the return period you should be able to cancel your contract no penalty.

what lags are you talking about?
When i got my first eris, it locked up on me 8 times in a span of 30 hours ( it would freeze every time i would get a call). I exchanged it for another Eris and after a week of using it i am very happy.

Don't be oblivious to stating that iPhone doesnt have those problems. Yes it does. Same way as on Eris from time to time you have to wait for the keyboard to rotate, it does freeze, and yes, from time to time it lags. And thats considering that iPhone was on a market for this long..

*I am not bashing iPhone here at all. Its a great phone, but enough worshiping it. Apple is great, but has problems too.

**Cant wait to get a new MacBook Pro =)

Ugh.
Go to the market, get a task killer, and kill all apps you don't need open. Freeing up memory makes your phone perform better.
No need to take it back to the store just because of that.. and definitely no need to call it a piece of crap.

thats really just a dumb response. i have one and it hasnt prevent the lockups, but in any case why do i need to buy something to make my phone work properly?

When did I say buy something?
How's it a dumb response if it was trying to help you?
Didn't say a damn thing about preventing lockups.. that's a software issue a lot of people have.
Tell you what, since my responses are so dumb, don't expect anymore from me trying to help you.

Just because the Eris is 528mhz and the iphone is 600mhz doesn't mean that the Eris is 88% of the speed of the iphone. They have completely different processors and the iPhone is going to do more processing clock for clock that the Eris. And don't quote me on this, but I believe that the Qualcomm 528mhz processor doesn't have a dedicated GPU (EDIT: Verified, no dedicated GPU in the Eris) like the Droid/iPhone 3Gs Arm Cortex CPU does, which would make a major difference in performance. In other words, you get what you pay for, and to be honest $100, or even free for the Eris is a great overall value.

um...my email settings are set to once a day...why do i get an email notification once i get a new one?

I am writing it here because i got an email saying that there is a reply haha

LOL - Go to the 'User CP' at the top of this website (well, close to the top, above the thread area anyway), then click on 'Edit Options' on the left, then scroll until you see 'Default Thread Subscription Mode'. Change this from 'Daily Email Notification' or 'Instant Email Notification' to 'No email notification'. This is very annoying, I had to change it too! I have 93 emails that I didn't want!

First of all, my Eris is very offended that you think she is a "piece of crap". Myself and many many others are very happy with this phone and are able to DEAL WITH her issues, which luckily in my case, are few.

Have you tried going into a Verizon store and getting help? Have you asked for a replacement? Have you talked to them about the terms of your contract and if you are able to cancel if you aren't happy? In my experience, they have always been very helpful and willing to work with me.

But it sounds to me like you have already made up your mind, so just cancel. That is if you are still within your 30 days. Your loss, I say!

Oh REALLY??? You "verified it"??? Well guess what? You're
WRONG. The Eris has a decent deticated GPU. Please stop posting misinformation when you dont know what you are talking about.

Eris uses MSM7600A chipset.

Here are the specs of the dedicated GPU that it part of the MSM7600 chipset.

3D capabilities:
Blazing fast 3D graphics rivaling the best dedicated handheld gaming devices
• Advanced 2D/3D graphics support with up to 4 million 3D triangles per second, and 133 million 3D textured pixels per second fill rate
• Q3Dimension™ rendering engine with OpenGL

Comparing to the Iphone 3gs is really not fair. The Eris should be compared against the Iphone 3G which is the same price. The IPhone 3g has a 412 MHz processor and does lag quite a bit. The IPhone OS is much more optimized then Android at this point. There is a reason apple keeps their OS's on their devices. So much easier to make it run nicely. Even so it does still lag. And let's not forget the original IPhone. Man that thing was slow.

Compare the Motorola to the 3GS as that's a much fairer comparison.

Another thing I've found is that there are certain apps that really should be killed. The HTC Web Browser is a killer. The way it caches information causes a tremendous amount of strain on the OS.

I just got done doing a lot of research on the whole task management for the task manager I wrote and I've found some interesting things. First off the phone's auto kill is set to 16MB which is way to low IMO for this phone. It should be closer to 30MB as that's where I start to see noticeable lag on my phone. It also doesn't really autokill right away. It sends notifications to each of the open applications asking them nicely to release some memory. Its up to the app developer to capture this notification and free up some memory. Not a lot of developers do this.

I've also learned that there is a right way and a wrong way to exit an application. I almost always hit the home button to get back to the home screen. This actually is wrong and I'm working to change my habits. The "correct" way is to use the back button. The OS apparently forces some cleanup when you hit the back button that it doesn't if you hit home. I've noticed my phone uses less memory when I use the back button. I wonder if those having serious lag issues are doing what I do and hit the home button as well?

It may be. I have been using the back button since day one and my Eris works pretty much flawlessly.

To the OP:

Replace the phone, switch to the Moto Droid or go get the iPhone. In other words, quit complaining and do something about it. Once you figure out that the iPhone, Droid and every other phone made has their own particular set of problems or flaws then return that and get something else that will make you complain on a completely different forum.

Same here. I'm a back button kind of guy, and my phone behaves quite nicely.

OTD, you need to learn not to hold back so much when telling folks what you think. Keeping all of that inside is going to give you heartburn or something. :)
