What is Att going to do to this phone?

I have been hoping that a replacement for my Att N1 would be shown at CES and with a promise of a few new devices for Att it might actually come true. The Atrix sitting ontop of my interest list. My only question is if Att is going to disable the option to side load on the phones, if they do then Att ftl and I might just make the switch to t-mobile which has been a big support of android.

That is the same (and only, locked boot loader and all) concern I have about this phone. On paper, this phone is just about EVERYTHING I want in a phone, but if at&t does not allow side loading of apps, I will get the slightly inferior version on VZW. Please at&t!!! Restore my faith in you!!!

Why can't you simply use something like the side loader wonder machine. AT&T disabled the option to side load apps on the Captivate but that didn't stop people from doing it.

Because I don't want to jump through hoops to do something everyother Android phone does. Even Verizon allows sideloading on their phones.

Yeah its pretty much one click and 10 seconds later the app is installed on your phone. Hardly jumping through hoops.

Although for apps in the market that AT&T blocks I've read that you can remove the SIM card and the app will show up. I've never tried it though so I'm not 100% positive it will work.

Also once it's rooted you can download apps through the browser and install right on the phone.

yea it works the best part is 95% of people will never sideload anything on their android so in reality its not a deal breaker for most AT&T customers

This phone will be harder to crack than the captivate (there was already a lot of work and knowledge gained from work on other galaxy S devices, plus we now have a locked bootloader to contend with. BUT, I think that this phone's amazing specs will attract people on XDA, so my money is on them to crack it open.

That said, I have a captivate. I hated touchwiz, wanted to do wireless tethering, wanted to get stock Froyo, didn't want all the at&t bloatware, etc etc etc, so I rooted and flashed a great ROM. However, I really wish I didn't have to void my warranty every time I get an AT&T cell phone. It's getting tiresome, and I'm worried about the eFuze thing... with the captivate, 99% of the time if you made a mistake while flashing, you could go into download mode and reflash the phone, but now I think it will be riskier. I think I'm going to talk to some Droid X owners and see how safe they feel about flashing and rooting their phones with the eFuse. I guess it all depends on how well the devs on XDA can make a reliable, easy to follow guide / software program that will unlock this beast.

Come on XDA... I'm counting on you guys...

As soon as the project is underway I will be a big donor (well, like 20 bucks - I don't have a lot of money), and I suggest that everyone else on this thread does the same thing. Support the devs that make these things possible; it isn't easy and it takes a lot of time, they deserve our support.

I hope you're right bro, but AT&T has historically always hated Android... I don't think they're going to stop crippling android phones until consumers vote with their wallets and always buy Nexus phones and/or switch to a carrier that touches android the least.

It's so F***ING stupid that AT&T preloads things like at&t navigator (a PAY service) on an android phone; we already have google maps and google navigator and they are free... are some people really so tech-dumb that they use at&t's paid services???

The locked bootloader isn't att fault that's Moto the sideloading is att but you can easily get around that. Bloatware can be hidden but I don't think removed. Honestly though all providers add bloatware only the nexus phones are bloat free. so until Google becomes a provider were sol

Well if all you want is sideloading the sideload wonder machine doesn't require that the phone be rooted. Although I do think the Atrix will be harder to root. The people over at XDA are insane with what they're able to do. I don't doubt that they'll get the phone rooted. I've heard that custom roms may be an issue but as far as rooting goes they should be able to do that.

at&t doesn't hate Android, but they made too much money off the iPhones, they weren't going to have Android devices trump that. at&t has committed to 12 high end Android Devices this year, so I think they're doing good IMO.

And, unlike last year with the promised five new devices, this is a big step forward. I believe they realize they need to be more competitive in their device offerings so now they are offering high end Android phones so they have a device for everyone: Android, Windows Phone 7, iOS, and BlackBerry.

It took me a little while to get the right drivers installed and to get the SLWM working but once it worked the first time I was side loading apps like a mofo.

Guys..

Don't over estimate XDA or underestimate Locked boot loaders.

The people ate XDA are EXCELLENT, and I would never mean to belittle them in anyway.

However, somethings to keep in mind. If there is a locked bootloader thats a bitch to track.. Sure motorola did it.. but, don't think at&t doesn't push them to it.

Next.. The G2 on Tmobile is causing some problems.. It literally will reflash itself to stock!

Just because XDA can get around it eventually doesn't mean you won't be sitting out in the cold with a problem for 2 months waiting on xda to crack the phone..

or for motorola to roll out with a fix.

I did love the screen, swype and the camera
